An Introduction to Contemporary Circus is an online course for students, artists, teachers and researchers. Its aim is both to provide a smart, connected, global overview of the work being made now in the circus field, and to open a conversation around the values, characteristics, and perhaps limitations of circus as an art form.
The course will include some historical background, but is mainly focused on contemporary creation and the artistic process. We’ll look at the various ways creative work begins, at methods for research, at education, and at the analysis or ‘reading’ of circus performance. Each lesson will be animated by voices from the sector through extracts of video interviews with leading artists and companies.
As we go we’ll also be translating the key ideas of the course into other artistic contexts (visual art, dance, literature, etcetera) – to clarify our perspectives on circus, but also in recognition of the fact that studying art (as a practitioner or a thinker) means developing a broad, interdisciplinary sensitivity to culture and the nuances of creative work.
We hope that this course will seed many new ideas, and that it’ll be a challenging and varied experience. We hope as well that the lesson materials will serve as a platform for some intense and rewarding discussions and arguments. See you in there.
