De oudste actieve circusdirecteur van Europa is niet meer. Leo Verswijvel, alias Bill Kartoum, overleed op zaterdag 5 november 2016 in Wilrijk. Hij werd net geen 88.
“Ik blijf leven tot ik dood ben! Maar als ik doodga, zo heeft de dokter mij gezegd, mogen ze mij niet in een houten kist stoppen, want dan kruip ik er zeker uit.” (Bill Kartoum)
Dat is een van de vele heerlijke citaten die in ‘De Kapriolen van Bill Kartoum’ staan, het boek waarin André De Poorter het levensverhaal van Leo Verswijvel uit de doeken doet. In de inleiding schrijft De Poorter het volgende: “De nu drieëntachtigjarige Bill blijft een aparte verschijning in het Belgische circuswereldje. Steeds getooid in cowboypak en dito laarzen. Door tegenslagen niet klein te krijgen. Door niets uit zijn lood te slaan. Onrustig, soms heftig, soms kwaad. Nooit bang voor gedurfde uitspraken. Boeiend verteller. Soms onbezonnen en specialist van de improvisatie. Af en toe ernstig, meestal welgezind. Tot op vandaag steeds maar nieuwe plannen makend. Onvermoeibaar en optimist. Iemand die niets liever doet dan de mensen entertainen. De meest kleurrijke figuur die het Belgische circuswereldje ooit heeft gekend.”
Bill Kartoum was niets meer dan een fenomeen. Beroemd en berucht. Een clown in hart en nieren. Hij stamde uit een oud circusgeslacht, was als directeur of artiest actief in verschillende circussen (zoals Circus Selma, Buffalo Circus, Cirque Espagnol, Circus Apollo en uiteraard Magic Circus), beoefende tal van circusdisciplines (leeuwentemmer, berentemmer, clown, draadloper, muzikant, messenwerper, scherpschutter, …) en trok in de jaren 1960 en 1970 naar Turkije, het Midden-Oosten en Italië, waar hij onder andere meespeelde in tientallen spaghettiwesterns.
In Italië leerde hij bovendien Patrizia Lotti kennen, de vrouw met wie hij sinds 1975 lief en leed deelt. Samen richtten ze in België eind jaren 1980 Magic Circus op, waarmee ze de laatste jaren vooral in scholen en rusthuizen optraden. Zijn laatste optreden gaf Bill in augustus 2016 op 87-jarige leeftijd. Eind augustus werd hij opgenomen in het Sint-Augustinusziekenhuis in Wilrijk. Een bloedklonter in zijn hoofd kwam hij niet te boven.
Bill laat een onwaarschijnlijk verleden na. Duizenden herinneringen, honderden verhalen. Een prachtige vrouw. Een rotsvast geloof in de toekomst. In het leven. In het circus.
Het ga je goed, Bill.
