Nieuw op Smells Like Circus: een heuse expositie in De Expeditie. Het betreft een tweeluik: de prachtige en soms confronterende circusfoto’s van Prince Naymuzzaman enerzijds, het schoolproject ‘Patchwork’ anderzijds.
Als documentairefotograaf maakte Prince Naymuzzaman (Dhaka, Bangladesh) een prachtige reeks foto’s van een nomadisch circus in zijn land. De foto’s geven een sterk beeld van hoe circus en het circusleven toch zo anders kunnen zijn op mondiale schaal: kleurrijk en indrukwekkend, maar evengoed hard, rauw en armtierig.
Naar aanleiding van deze fotoreeks werkten twee klassen van de Gentse basisschool Sint-Salvator enkele weken aan het circusproject ‘Patchwork’. Onder begeleiding van beeldend kunstenaar Viola Vandomme worden thema’s als circus, textiel en kinderarbeid creatief benaderd (met onder meer een bezoek aan een circus uit eigen land). De resultaten hiervan kan je ook op de expo bewonderen.

Prince Naymuzzaman
Naymuzzaman Khan Prince is een sociale fotograaf met Bangladesh als thuisbasis. Tot zijn belangrijkste werken behoren reeksen over kinderkanker, arbeiders van scheepswerven, klimaatsveranderingen en aangetaste gemeenschappen, tijgerweduwen in Sundarbans, Cuba – evolutie binnen de revolutie, de slachtoffers van de Rwandese genocide, melaatsendorpen in Tamil Nadu, … Daarnaast maakt Prince ook videoreportages. Zowel zijn foto- als videoreportages zijn internationaal verschenen en vertoond. Doorheen zijn werk probeert Prince sociale en culturele aspecten weer te geven. Zijn sterke motivatie en verbinding met mensen vertaalt zich in delicate, sterke en soms melancholische beelden. Elke foto is een reflectie van de gevoeligheid binnen de menselijkheid, met een emotionele toets, zijn persoonlijke handtekening. www.nzprince.com
Viola Vandomme
Viola Vandomme is theatervormgeefster en beeldend kunstenaar. Ze behaalde haar master in de Vrije Kunsten optie Beeldhouwkunst aan de St-Lucashogeschool in Gent en studeerde vervolgens theatervormgeving aan de Posthogeschool voor Podiumkunsten (PoPoK) in Antwerpen en cultuurwetenschappen (ManaMa) aan de VUB. Viola gaat graag op zoek naar artistieke projecten met een sociaal kantje aangezien ze het bijzonder boeiend vindt enthousiastelingen bij te staan in hun onderzoek naar beeldende middelen. Ze is bedreven in het begeleiden van vrijwilligers in een creatief proces, vanuit haar ervaring als leerkracht en haar ervaringen met amateurtheater en jeugdwerk. www.violarte.be
