Van Circus Knie tot Circus Krone, van Noorwegen tot Zuid-Afrika: Patricia De Jonghe speelde overal. Eerst met haar familie bij Circus De Jonghe, later met De Chicky’s: Eugene Altenberger en Patricia’s man, de wereldberoemde witte clown, Bruno Stutz. Voor de reeks Living Circus Treasures zochten we de inmiddels 74-jarige Patricia op bij haar thuis in Hofstade. Wat herinnert Patricia zich nog van de tournees in Congo? Hoe leerde ze haar man Bruno kennen? En wat liep er ei zo na mis met haar olifantenact?

Patricia De Jonghe werd geboren in 1942, tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Ze kwam ter wereld in Doornik, want daar was Circus De Jonghe op dat moment op tournee. Patricia behoort tot de vierde generatie van de bekende circusfamilie. Haar overgrootvader Alphonse De Jonghe begon vanaf 1885 rond te reizen met een kermistheater, waarin Bijbelse taferelen over de kruisweg en scènes over Jeanne d’Arc werden gespeeld. In 1889 schakelde hij over naar de op dat moment bloeiende circusbranche. Tussen de twee Wereldoorlogen was Circus De Jonghe incontournable in België. Op een gegeven moment waren er maar liefst 130 mensen in dienst en stonden er 45 paarden in de stallen.
Patricia was dus voorbestemd om zelf ook in het circus te belanden. Van de verschillende artiesten die bij Circus De Jonghe werkten, leerde ze acrobatie, trapeze en draadlopen. Vanaf haar tiende trad ze mee op in de shows. Een stabiele schoolloopbaan heeft Patricia tot haar spijt dus nooit gekend, zoals ze hier vertelt.
In 1952 trok haar vader César samen met zijn broers richting Congo. De Belgische staat gaf hen de opdracht om in de kolonie rond te toeren. Zes maanden per jaar speelde Circus De Jonghe er in openlucht, vaak in dezelfde steden. Al het materiaal werd per boot naar Congo gebracht, net als de dieren. Haar tienerjaren bracht Patricia dus voornamelijk door in Congo, waar ze fantastische herinneringen aan overhoudt.
De Congolezen waren zot van acts als contorsionisme en illusionisme. Er waren ook enkele Congolese artiesten in dienst, zoals de dwerg Shimanga. Een waar fenomeen, zo vertelt Patricia.
In 1960, Patricia was toen zeventien, werd het land plots onafhankelijk. Een Belgisch circus was dan ook niet meer gewenst in Congo. De lokale politie verbood de Congolezen om nog tickets te kopen. En zo eindigde een roemrijke periode in de geschiedenis van Circus De Jonghe. Enkele jaren later, in 1969, zou Victor De Jonghe nog onder de naam Cirque Congo rondtoeren in België, maar zonder veel succes.
Na de avonturen in Congo zetten de verschillende leden van de circusfamilie hun pad individueel voort. Gaby De Jonghe, die overleed in 2012, begon samen met haar man Boris Sobolewski een indrukwekkende internationale carrière. Patricia was samen met haar moeder een tijdje op tournee met haar draadnummer, toen ze in 1962 in Cirque Royal in Brussel haar latere echtgenoot Bruno Stutz ontmoette. Het was liefde op het eerste gezicht. Dankzij zanger Bob Benny, die stiekem een rendez-vous tussen hen arrangeerde, verloofden Bruno en Patricia zich uiteindelijk.
In 1963 trokken Patricia en Bruno een jaar mee met Circus Knie en konden ze elkaar eindelijk écht leren kennen. Patricia trad er samen met de jonge circusdirecteur op Sneeuwwitje en de prins en Bruno bracht er zijn clownsnummer. Circus Knie zag hier meteen een promostunt in en wilde graag dat het koppel trouwde tijdens de tournee. Dat weigerden Bruno en Patricia, omdat ze de dag na hun huwelijk niet meteen opnieuw de piste in wilden.
Van 1962 tot Bruno’s dood in 2015 waren ze een onafscheidelijk circuskoppel. Wat maakte hen zo’n sterk duo? En was dat niet lastig, zo voortdurend bij elkaar zijn?
Samen kregen ze één zoon: Serge. Door het drukke tourleven van Bruno en Patricia bleef Serge bij de ouders van Bruno in Zürich. Niet evident, omdat Patricia er niet altijd kon zijn voor hem. Vanaf zijn twaalfde trok Serge wel mee met zijn circusouders. Hij was pas veertien toen hij zelf startte met jongleren. Eerst met steentjes, daarna met tennisrackets. Dat leverde hem enkele speciale optredens op tijdens de US Open en Roland Garros. Tijdens zijn periode bij het Lido in Monte Carlo, leerde hij zijn Australische vrouw kennen. Sinds 1995 woont het koppel in Australië, waar Serges vrouw een balletschool runt. Patricia ziet haar zoon dus slechts sporadisch, al hebben ze wel een hechte band.
Patricia en Bruno trokken van 1963 tot 2003 samen met Eugen Altenberger rond als De Chicky’s: een wereldwijd bekend clownstrio. Bruno was de witte clown, Eugen de domme August en Patricia de ‘partnerin’. De meest succesvolle act van de Chicky’s was die met de spiegel. Patricia vertelt hoe deze in elkaar zat.
Wanneer Bruno en Patricia bij Circus Knie speelden, had ze ook een nummer waarin Patricia danste op twee olifanten. Eén keertje liep het ei zo na mis…
Tijdens hun lange internationale carrière ontmoetten Bruno en Patricia tal van bekende sterren en royals. Charlie Chaplin was één van hen, net als prinses Grace van Monaco. Patricia haalt ook even de gitaar van haar man boven, gesigneerd door tal van grote namen.
Patricia en Bruno hebben nooit om werk verlegen gezeten. Ieder seizoen konden ze rondtoeren met het circus. Hoe heeft Patricia de clownerie in de loop der jaren zien evolueren? En is het vandaag de dag nog zo evident om als clown aan de bak te geraken?
Tot 2008 bleven Patricia en Bruno actief in het circus, op het laatste bij Herman Renz. Waarom kozen ze ervoor om vervolgens met pensioen te gaan? En hoe beleefden ze die jaren vol reizen en schilderen?
In 2015 overleed Bruno na een lang ziekbed aan beenmergkanker, oftewel de ziekte van Kahler. Sindsdien besteedt Patricia haar tijd aan turnen, yoga, zangkoor en lezen. Maar daarnaast houdt ze via Facebook ook nog contact met haar voormalige circuscollega’s. En zo blijft Patricia – een echte wereldburger – nog steeds betrokken bij het circusgebeuren.
