Sinds 1974 kregen slechts twee Vlamingen de hoogste circusonderscheiding, de Gouden Clown van het circusfestival van Monte Carlo. Dit jaar kreeg Merrylu Cassely-Gossing deze uitzonderlijke erkenning. Het tweede Goud ging naar de grote acrobatengroep van het Chinese Shangai. Roland Vermeylen is sinds jaar en dag fan van het festival. Zijn hoogstpersoonlijke impressies lees je hier.
Het kan nog: bijzondere synergie bij klassieke circusfamilies
Jozsef Richter komt fier op zijn twee geschimmelde Pinzgauer paarden de grootse Monte Carlo piste binnen. Boven zijn hoofd torst hij zijn Vlaamse vrouw Merrylu Cassely-Gossing. Een volle tent met ruim vierduizend toeschouwers is meteen gefascineerd. De paarden houden – zonder ringmaster in het midden van de piste – een gelijke tred en Merrylu en Jozsef brengen een unieke pas de deux. Een krachtige en elegante dans op de rug van deze mooie koudbloedpaarden.
De ene beweging gaat vlot op de andere over. Beiden zijn erg gefocust op elkaar. Jozsef ment daarnaast zijn twee paarden. Merrylu zwiert esthetisch en acrobatisch om hem heen. Hij draait zich om en ment nu de paarden, omgekeerd kijkend aan de looprichting. Het publiek groeit mee in deze act. De verwondering neemt toe. De livemuziek met een swingende zangeres ondersteunt en bekrachtigt. Het orkest volgt nauwgezet alle bewegingen en speelt ook gevoelig stiller als de paarden vooral rustig en precies hun eigen tred dienen aan te houden. De Duitse kwaliteitskrant Frankfurter Allgemeine beschrijft het achteraf als “uniek in de hele circusgeschiedenis”.
Als een directe link met de geschiedenis van 250 jaar circus konden de organisatoren geen betere act vinden. Dit gaat terug op de oervorm van circus toen sergeant Philip Astley het leger verliet en aan de Westminster brug in Londen zijn ‘Astley’s Royal Amphitheatre of Arts’ oprichtte. Dit is klassieke circuskunst van vandaag waar de continuïteit erg mee wordt in stand gehouden. Naast hun pas de deux brengen Merrylu en Jozsef nog een buitengewoon rustige carrousel met zo’n tweeëndertig dieren in drie elkaar tegengesteld verlopende kringen. Alleen Merrylu en Jozsef leiden sereen deze groep en tonen aan hoe dieren van zeer veel soorten met elkaar kunnen omgaan. Zelfs de zes zebra’s die als ‘vluchtdieren’ meestal erg schuw zijn, werken heel rustig mee. Ook hierin zijn de Richters toonaangevend. Zo gaan dierenfluisteraars vandaag met hun dieren in een sterke verbondenheid met elkaar om.
In een derde act zijn Merrylu en Jozsef met vijf andere jongeren van de Richterfamilie jockey op hun snelle paarden. Al generaties lang zijn de Hongaarse Richters hierin gespecialiseerd. De hele act heeft het ritme van hun csardas-dansen. De vader en moeder van Joszef kregen hier in Monte Carlo tijdens het allereerste Festival in 1974 al de Zilveren Clown voor. Telkens tijdens en na elke act krijgen de Richters een staande ovatie. Merrylu straalt. Haar huwelijk met Jozsef verdiept haar levenstraject van steeds verder excelleren in de circuskunst. Ze incarneert hier een sterke synergie die zich zomaar niet laat dicteren.
Minstens vier circusfamilies hebben hun savoir vivre kunnen samenbrengen. De Richters zijn zowaar de circuselite-familie van Hongarije. De Duitse Cassely’s trekken al generaties lang in Duitsland met hun familiecircus. Onze Vlaamse Merrylu stamt uit de familie Gossing die woont in het Pajottenland en uit de fietsende jongleurfamilie Riems uit Sint Niklaas. Het kan dus nog. Klassieke circusfamilies brengen nog hedendaags circus waar excelleren, gratie, professionaliteit én kunst hand in hand gaan.
Zeer verscheiden leer- en levenstrajecten met heel verschillende creatieprocessen
Sinds 1974 loopt dit Monte Carlo festival. Het blijft een boeiende staalkaart voor hedendaags circus. De meest uiteenlopende groep artiesten kun je hier ontmoeten. Zoals de Canadees-Russische topleraar Victor Fomine zei: “Als artiest en begeleider werk je hier samen naar een hoogtepunt en kun je in het beste geval een eerste plafond in je kunst bereiken. Hier krijg je de erkenning waarvoor je al vele jaren hard werkt en leeft. Deze erkenning stimuleert om door te groeien en verder te leren en naar een nieuw, hoger plafond te streven. Monte Carlo is een heel bijzondere bekrachtiger voor virtuoze leertrajecten. Dit maakt Monte Carlo zo uniek en ook broodnodig voor de verdere ontwikkeling van de circuskunst.” Victor en zijn vrouw begeleiden de jonge Duitser Nicolaï Kuntz in hun studio in Montréal in zijn vernieuwend trapezewerk. Kunz groeide op in circus Krone en bij Flic Flac.
Naast de klassieke circusfamilies (acht op de dertig acts) komen de meeste artiesten uit circusscholen (veertien groepen). Ook acht acts hebben hun eigen leerweg gevolgd en komen via eigen interesse of via de turnwereld in het circus terecht. Vaak geven die fusies creatieve vernieuwingen. Zo komen de Canadezen Jonathan Morin en Marie Eve Bisson met een experiment met een gekruiste roue Cyr die ze zowel op de grond als in de lucht kunnen presenteren. De Spaanse gymnast Saulo Sarmiento zocht het eerst in de danswereld maar vond dan zijn leerkansen bij de Franse Farfadais die nu producties samen met Alexis Gruss opzetten. Toen hij bij Franco Dragone in Macao werkte, ontdekte hij per toeval hoe zijn Chinese mast ook half horizontaal en zelfs bewegend kon worden gebruikt en heel nieuwe acrobatische kansen geeft aan deze prop. De Oost-Duitse Carmen Zander was een Olympische ritmische turnster en na haar turncarrière trok ze naar de Berlijnse circusschool waar ze leerde jongleren. Al werkend in het circus ontdekte ze haar empathisch vermogen om met roofdieren te kunnen omgaan. Ze leerde de dressuur van vele gerenommeerde dierenleraars en kocht – van een zoo – uiteindelijk vijf kleine tijgers die ze met de papfles opvoedde. Nu brengt ze een uiterst rustige en vooral nabije act.
Prinses Stephanie: “Ne touche pas à mon cirque”
Samen met haar broer, Prins Albert, staat Stéphanie aan het roer van dit toch heel prestigieuze wereldfestival dat in 1974 door hun vader, Prins Rainier, werd opgericht. Rainier had zelf een voorliefde voor dieren in het circus. Hij had ook zelf zijn eigen dierentuin en een eigen park waar hij dieren dresseerde. In de zeventiger jaren had het circus het moeilijk en Rainier wou het circus ondersteunen. Hij creëerde de ‘Oscars van de Circuskunst’. Nu wil Stéphanie het circus op haar beurt sterk ondersteunen. Ze wil vooral de diversiteit blijven garanderen en naast de circusscholen ook de klassieke circusfamilies een hart onder de riem steken. Vooral wil ze de negatieve druk die er nu leeft tegenover wilde dieren in het circus ombuigen.
“Dieren hebben het goed in het hedendaags circus. Activisten willen ons hun stellingen opdringen en zoeken vooral steun bij pers en politici. Ze gaan al lang over fatsoenlijke grenzen heen en ik wil onze waarheid luider verkondigen. Wetenschappelijk onderzoek blijft aantonen hoe circusdieren het nu wél goed hebben.” Ook op de workshops van de Europese Circusassociatie (ECA) en van de Wereldfederatie voor Circuskunst kwamen sprekers uit alle werelddelen hun ervaringen bespreken. Het Finse staatsinstituut voor circus – vergelijkbaar met Vlaams Circuscentrum – kwam toelichten hoe ze circus met dieren op de UNESCO-lijst brachten.
Het 42° Circusfestival in Monte Carlo zit er weer op met meer toeschouwers dan de vorige jaren. Het niveau blijft hoog en de diversiteit sterk. Naast het artistieke brengt het festival in elk geval ook de stem van het circus naar buiten. Het leert bijvoorbeeld hoe de stem van wetenschappelijke experten en ervaringsdeskundigen heel weinig impact heeft op politici. Drukkingsgroepen hebben dan des te meer ruimte om steeds meer impact te verwerven.
Nu wordt het ook duidelijk hoe circusdieren puur een symboolwaarde hebben voor extreme groepen. Dit was al vorig jaar de conclusie van een wetenschappelijke werkgroep van de groene, ecologisch-georiënteerde universiteit van Wageningen. De circuswereld is eigenlijk overspoeld geraakt en is een zeer gemakkelijke prooi voor deze dieractivisten. Nu wordt het duidelijk hoe deze extreme groepen zich meer en meer agressief richten op ook het inschakelen van begeleidershonden voor blinden, epileptici en minder validen. Extreme groepen vinden dat deze honden slaaf van de mens worden en in hun rechten worden miskend. Dat deze honden – net als circusdieren – vooral functioneren in een liefdevolle en respectvolle samenwerking en partnership speelt voor extremisten niet. Hun fundamentalistische boodschap gaat voor alles. De vraag blijft hoe lang politici en pers deze flow zullen blijven volgen. Het Monegaske Festival richt in elk geval dit jaar terecht hierop zijn schijnwerpers.
