Karl Heinrich Malter, beter bekend als Harry Malter, is een levende legende. Met Circus Piste beleefde hij een gouden tijd in de jaren zeventig. Zijn olifanten schitterden aan de zijde van Gerard Depardieu en tijdens campagnes van Côte d’Or. De laatste 25 jaar is hij vooral bekend van zijn Familiepark nabij Gent, waar hij ons op een winterse decemberdag verwelkomt voor een privérondleiding en een diepgaand gesprek bij een stukje taart.

Wanneer we aankomen in Familiepark Harry Malter zijn er volop werken aan de gang. In het voorjaar moet het domein in Destelbergen weer openen. Harry (°1938) hoopt dan nog meer bezoekers te verwelkomen dan de tienduizenden die in 2017 over de vloer kwamen. Voor we aan het interview beginnen, neemt Harry ons in een golfkarretje op sleeptouw doorheen zijn wondere wereld vol ringstaartmaki’s, kabouterhuisjes en gorillaglijbanen.
Daarna zoeken we de warmte op in de kantine. We hebben taartjes meegebracht; Harry voorziet thee. Veel vragen moeten we hem niet stellen. Harry blijkt een spraakwaterval die ons zonder problemen meeneemt naar het begin van zijn bijzondere levensverhaal, in het Berlijn van net voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, op de vlucht voor Hitler…
“Maar na het pretpark wilde onze vader toch terug de baan op met het circus,” vertelt Harry. “Al werd dat niet echt een groot succes. Na 1950 werd het moeilijker voor het circus in Duitsland. De mensen wilden een auto, een tv-toestel en op vakantie. Het circus verloor zijn noodzaak. We verhuisden naar Nederland, maar dat was te kort na de oorlog. We waren er niet zo graag gezien. ‘Die Duitsers zijn hier toch niet weeral?’ Dat soort reacties kregen we. Uiteindelijk belandden we in België en veranderden we onze naam in Tiroler Circus. Onze specialiteit waren de vele dieren die we meebrachten: kamelen, tijgers, panters en poema’s bijvoorbeeld. En we hadden een grote menagerie. Dat zag je niet bij Belgische circussen.”

“Heel onze familie werkte in het circus. Ik had een Houdini-nummer met boeien en deed acts met resusaapjes en pony’s. Mijn broer Ulrich werkte met kamelen en beren. En mijn zus Rose-Marie was koorddanseres. Door één à twee extra artiesten in te huren konden we een mooi programma samenstellen. Wij waren een flexibel circus, want wij hadden een vliegende cirk [een tent, terwijl er toen vooral met houten kiosken werd gereisd, nvdr]. Terwijl andere circussen twee à drie dagen nodig hadden om op te bouwen en af te breken, stelden wij iedere dag onze tent op in een andere wijk. Zo konden we op plekken komen waar nooit een ander circus kwam. Mijn vader wilde de massa bereiken: liever een volle tent aan halve prijs dan een halve tent aan volle prijs. Het circus moest democratisch zijn.”
Nadat Tiroler Circus stopte, begon Harry in 1972 zijn eigen Piste Circus. Op het hoogtepunt had hij liefst 45 medewerkers in dienst. In 1978 stopte hij, na een lange afscheidstournee. In Antwerpen alleen al trok zijn circus op tien dagen tijd 28.000 toeschouwers.
Ook Harry’s familie ging verder in het circus. Zo richtte zijn broer Ulrich Malter het Wiener Circus op. Zijn zus Rose-Marie en haar man Jean Gebruers begonnen met Apollo Circus dat later werd omgedoopt tot het alom bekende Circus Rose-Marie Malter. Waarom bundelden ze niet gewoon alle drie hun krachten, in een tijd waarin het voor rondreizende circussen toch erg moeilijk was om te overleven? Harry geeft er een antwoord op: “Met familie mag je alleen maar feesten.”
Tijd voor de liefde. Harry was twee keer getrouwd. Een eerste keer met Jeanine De Baets. “Zij stamt af van een van de oudste circusgeslachten van België: de familie Simon van het gelijknamige Circus Simon. Haar vader was toen de sterkste man van het land: hij kon een paard opheffen, terwijl er aan de poten nog andere mannen hingen. Ik heb Jeanine leren kennen tijdens een van onze tournees met het circus. Ze is me altijd bevallen: het was een mooi meisje en een goede artieste. Na Tiroler Circus hebben we samen twee jaar rondgereisd als artiesten. Ik met chimpansees en zij als koorddanseres. We hadden ook een act met een sabelkist. Daarna zijn we samen begonnen met Circus Piste.”
“Jeanine wilde daar niet graag mee stoppen. Toen we in 1978 begonnen met dierenverhuur, wilde ze na een tijdje opnieuw het circus in. Ik heb dan vier Afrikaanse olifantjes afgericht, waarmee ze opnieuw kon gaan optreden als artieste. Ze leerde toen een andere man kennen die ook ervaring had als dompteur. Het was misschien geen schoonheid – allez, dat vond ik toch – maar Jeanine kon hem goed gebruiken om haar dieren te verzorgen en ze is dan bij hem blijven plakken. Zo is er na twintig jaar een einde gekomen aan ons huwelijk.”
Ondertussen boomde Harry’s eigen carrière als dierenverhuurder volop. Vooral zijn olifanten waren populair: zij figureerden in films met internationale sterren, zoals hij hier vertelt.
Harry is later nog een tweede keer getrouwd, met Carine Hermans. Dat huwelijk eindigde echter in een vechtscheiding. Samen hebben ze twee kinderen: Sarah en Laurenz. “Ik heb mijn kinderen altijd wat weggehouden van de dieren,” geeft Harry toe. “Ik wou hen niet leren hoe je dieren moet africhten. Omdat ik weet: als ze zich te veel aan dieren hechten, kunnen ze geen goed familieleven hebben. Mensen die met dieren werken, zijn gedoemd om alleen te blijven. De beste dompteurs worden eenzaam oud.”

Toch willen we graag weten hoe je volgens Harry – die naar eigen zeggen nog nooit in een gevaarlijke situatie met een beest is beland – een dier moet temmen. Het antwoord blijkt simpeler dan gedacht.
“Carine en ik woonden hier om de hoek. Toen Sarah nog klein was, wilde ik graag eens met haar naar een dieren- of pretpark gaan. Maar in een straal van 50 kilometer rond Gent was er niets te vinden. Op de plek waar we nu zitten, was een klein cafeetje aan een visvijver. Ze verkochten er zelfs niet eens een ijsje voor Sarah. Ik wandelde wat rond in de buurt en kwam daarna terug bij de barvrouw. ‘Ach, ik kan mijn brood hier amper verdienen,’ zuchtte ze. Ze had nog een contract van twee jaar, voegde ze eraan toe. ‘Als je wil neem ik jouw contract over,’ antwoordde ik haar. Het was subiet beklonken. Een maand later was ik eigenaar van het domein. Op 1 januari 1978 ben ik dan begonnen om, samen met één helper, de sparrenbomen te rooien. Zo kon ik echt aan mijn droom beginnen: een eigen Familiepark.”
In 2017 zo’n 150.000 bezoekers op amper vijf maanden tijd: faut le faire. “Dat zijn gemiddeld zo’n 700 à 800 bezoekers per dag, met uitschieters van 1000 tot 2000 bezoekers wanneer er scholen langskomen.” Harry’s investering brengt dus een stevig rendement op. Toch kreeg hij ook geregeld te maken met protest. Bij de start spanden de buurtbewoners samen, omdat ze vreesden dat er een nieuw Walibi in hun achtertuin zou verrijzen. Later stond ook Gaia voor de deur met 33 vermeende overtredingen. Maar met het dierenwelzijn is er nooit een probleem geweest, beweert Harry.
De laatste tijd ligt hij toch vooral wakker rond het gedoe over zijn parking. “Die ligt blijkbaar op agrarisch gebied en moet weg. Maar de administratie van de Vlaamse Overheid is daar nu pas, na 25 jaar, achter gekomen. Als ik mijn parking kwijt zou raken, laat ik iedereen gewoon parkeren langs de kant van de straat. Al vrees ik dat het verdwijnen van de parking wel eens het einde van het park kan betekenen. Ik sluit niet uit dat als het ooit zo ver komt, ik mijn hele Familiepark naar elders verhuis.”
Denkt Harry soms aan stoppen of verkopen? “Er zijn een aantal gegadigden die het park meteen willen kopen. Financieel zou dat alleszins interessant zijn. Maar mijn dochter Sarah wil het park graag overnemen wanneer ik er niet meer ben, dus ik laat het liever over aan haar. Als ze slim is, behoudt ze de naam Harry Malter. Bobbejaanland heet toch ook nog altijd zo, ook al leeft Bobbejaan Schoepen niet meer?”
Dan was er ook nog het moeilijke afscheid van olifant Suzy, de populairste attractie van zijn Familiepark. Sinds 2001 was Suzy nog maar de enige olifant op het domein, wat niet goed was voor haar sociale ontwikkeling. Daarom bracht Harry haar – met spijt in het hart – in 2010 naar Pairi Daiza. Al herkent ze ook jaren later Harry’s stem nog…
Na een lange en rijk gevulde carrière staat Harry Malter nog steeds optimistisch in het leven. Ook nu nog ademt hij circus en gaat hij in het buitenland artiesten scouten die hij uitnodigt om op te treden in het kleine, maar uiterst gezellige circus in zijn Familiepark.
“Circus dat iets moois brengt en goed is voor de dieren? Dat zal altijd blijven bestaan.”
“Het circus zal nooit weggaan,” vertrouwt Harry ons tot slot toe. “Over 1000 jaar bestaat het nog steeds en over 5000 jaar ook. Circus gaat niet weg, al zal het anders worden gebracht. Een sport verdwijnt toch ook niet? Vroeger bij de Romeinen was er zelfs al circus: brood en spelen met leeuwen in de arena. Stierengevechten zullen zeker verdwijnen, want mensen houden er niet meer van om dieren te zien gedood worden. Maar circus dat iets moois brengt en goed is voor de dieren? Dat zal altijd blijven bestaan!”
