Op 7 november 2018 stierf circus- en variétéartieste Rosa De Rycke, alias Rose-Resy, op 85-jarige leeftijd. Een week later, op het afscheid in de kerk van Zwijnaarde, las André De Poorter de volgende tekst voor.
“Dierbare familie Zadra-De Rycke, aanwezige circusartiesten, oud-artiesten, vrienden en kennissen van de betreurde overledene Rosa De Rycke, of toch liever haar artiestennaam Rose-Resy. Over twee weken zou ze 86 zijn geworden, en plots ging ze van ons heen. Bij dit afscheid, hier in de Sint-Niklaaskerk van Zwijnaarde, past het om even terug te blikken op het leven van deze verdienstelijke circus- en variétéartieste.
Rosa Madeleine, Rose-Resy, zag het levenslicht in Gent op 29 november 1932 als enige dochter van Charles De Rycke en Julia De Waele die vanaf 1926 samen met het circus meetrokken. Charles was aanvankelijk muzikant, schuiftrombonist, in het orkest van Circus Tondeurs, en daarna bij Circus Demuynck, waar Rosa werd geboren. Later kwam vader bij Circus Semay terecht waar zijn broer August De Rycke door huwelijk met Christine Semay, mede-directeur was geworden.
De kleine Rosa leerde zo op jeugdige leeftijd het circusleven kennen en er ook van houden. Ze wou graag een nummer aanleren en vader overtuigde haar om voor een nummer te kiezen waarbij ze van niemand afhing. Het werd draadlopen, een act waarmee ze debuteerde op 12-jarige leeftijd. In 1946, reeds onder haar artiestennaam Rose-Resy, was ze aan de slag bij Demuynck en in december dat jaar opgenomen in het Kerstprogramma van de Gentse variétézaal Scala waar ze ook een tweede nummer bracht als acrobatische danseres Mademoiselle Lariche.
De jaren erop was ze met haar ouders weer bij Circus Semay, maar op 1 december 1949 was zij in diepe rouw door het overlijden van vader Charles, na een kortstondige ziekte. Om allen die in de rouw deelden te bedanken schreef Rosa een brief aan de uitgever van het Franstalige Brusselse circus- en variététijdschrift ‘Music-Hall et Circus’. Deze brief werd in het vakblad opgenomen. We geven hierbij een stukje van de tekst mee die ze schreef in het Frans, taal die ze door toedoen van haar overleden papa beheerste:
‘Cher ami Brachart,
Comme vous le savez, mon père est décédé à Roulers à l’âge de 44 ans, à la suite d’une opération à l’estomac et d’une double bronchite chronique. Ma mère et moi, nous avons beaucoup de chagrin. Papa était fier de moi et son rêve était de me voir engager à l’étranger. Hélas! Il ne verra pas son rêve se réaliser. Je continuerai à travailler pour acquérir davantage du talent.’
Dat waren de woorden van een meisje van nog geen 17 jaar oud, maar hoe volwassen klonken die. Het waren ook geen ijdele woorden want ze zorgde er ook voor dat de droom van haar vader in vervulling ging: een internationale carrière. Tijdens de volgende winter had ze een contract in het Hippodroom van het Engelse Eastbourne bij Robert Brothers Circus en in 1951 een seizoensverbintenis bij Mijares-Schreiber in Zweden. Een paar jaar later stond ze op de affiche van het Koninklijk Circus te Brussel en tussendoor was ze ook te zien bij Demuynck.
Tijdens het seizoen 1954 leerde ze Giovanni (gezegd Gianni) Zadra uit het Italiaanse Trento kennen in het Circus De Rycke-Semay waar hij met een partner gedurende 3 maanden optrad met een equilibrenummer. Daarna moest hij nog een zes maanden durend contract afwerken op Palma de Mallorca. Bij zijn vertrek zei hij tegen zijn geliefde: ‘Maar ik kom terug en als je dan aan het station staat, trouwen we.’ Zo gebeurde. Ze gaven mekaar het jawoord te Gent op 23 november 1955.
Vervolgens trokken ze samen op tournee, te beginnen met het Circo Americano in Spanje. Gianni assisteerde zijn echtgenote bij haar draadnummer als ‘Rose-Resy’ en zij begeleidde hem bij zijn handstandacrobatiek als ‘Les Giovannis’. Ze vormden een echt en hecht team. Men kon ze toejuichen bij de Gentse circussen De Rycke-Semay, Demuynck en Wiener; bij de Vlaamse circussen Apollinaris en Jhony. Verder bij onder meer Berliner, Rebernigg (ÖS), Salamon (NL) en het beroemde Knie (Zwitserland). Ze oogstten ook applaus in variététheaters zoals Oud-België Gent en Antwerpen, Astoria Bremen, Urania Berlijn en het befaamde Hansa Theater in Hamburg. Papa Gianni sloot zijn carrière af in 1977 bij het Zwiterse Circus Nock. Mama Rosa deed nog eventjes verder met een laatste engagement bij het Oostenrijkse Jacobi Althoff in 1980.
Jaren voordien was het artiestengezin uitgebreid met twee dochters, Linda en Gina, die al heel vroeg in het artiestenvak werden opgeleid en met hun ouders meereisden. Linda werd draadloopster zoals haar moeder. Na haar huwelijk ging ze de weg op van het variété. Met haar echtgenoot Tristan, muzikaal talent en dirigent van een groot orkest, vond zij haar thuishaven in Duitsland waar ze met haar gezin heden een reizend bestaan kent buiten de circuswereld. Gina, de jongste, die van haar moeder het draadlopen aanleerde en deze discipline nog steeds uitoefent, werd van jongs af opgeleid tot een uitstekende equilibriste. Hoe fier was mama niet toen ze als Gina Giovannis de ereprijs André Rivollet ontving tijdens het Circusfestival te Monte-Carlo en brons veroverde op het Wereldfestival van het Cirque de Demain, of wanneer zij de trofee Anne-Marie Puttevils kreeg overhandigd.
Eens op rust volgden ze samen de prestaties van hun kinderen tot drie en een half jaar geleden Gianni, enkele maanden voor hun 60ste huwelijksverjaardag, overleed. Van dan af leefde mama Rosa van het innig contact met haar kinderen en kleinkinderen, van wie ze zielsveel hield, en van de mooie herinneringen zoals toen zij Linda en Gina assisteerde bij hun optreden als de draadloopsters ‘Les Rose-Resy’ in het Kon. Circus Brussel 1983, in aanwezigheid van de koninklijke familie en ze achteraf een gesprek had met koningin Fabiola. Een hoogtepunt in haar artiestenleven.
Beste Rose-Resy, je was een geprezen artieste. Bedankt voor de mooie momenten die je de toeschouwers hebt geschonken. Beste Linda, Gina, Tristan en zonen Tristan, Gianni en Luis: wees gerust, mama en oma Rosa was heel fier op jullie. Zoals papa en opa Gianni dat ook was. Met enige verbeelding zie ik hem hierboven al klaarstaan naast een pick-up met daarop hun geliefde Spaanse melodie die bij hen beiden ooit de vlam deed overslaan. Lied waarop ze jaarlijks een paar keer dansten en hun wederzijdse liefde levend hielden. Kijk… Rosa is erbij gekomen en Gianni heeft de naald al op de plaat gelegd en we horen, terwijl ze dansen: ‘Weet dat ik u graag zie en u volg tot in de dood…’”
