Zijn echte naam is Kristiaan Van der Linden, maar iedereen kent hem als de ‘Circus- en foorpater’. Op zijn 89ste (°21 augustus 1929) crosst de pater uit de Kapucijnenorde nog steeds het land rond om circusartiesten, kermiskramers en woonwagenbewoners te dopen, huwen of begraven.

In de reeks Living Circus Treasures gaan journalist Filip Tielens en Mui-Ling Verbist van Circuscentrum op de koffie bij een ‘levende legende’ uit het circusveld. Na hun bezoekjes bij Circus Jhony, Patricia De Jonghe en Harry Malter was het deze keer de beurt aan ‘circuspater’ Kristiaan, die we ontmoeten op het kantoor van Circuscentrum.
Ondanks zijn gezegende leeftijd staat zijn agenda bol van de opdrachten, met nog steeds iedere dag meerdere afspraken overal ten lande. Het is duidelijk: niet alleen de nomadische wereld van circus en kermis kan niet zonder hem, ook pater Kristiaan kan zijn clientèle – van wie velen in de loop der jaren vrienden werden – en zijn christelijke missie niet missen.
Kristiaan Van der Linden werd geboren in Booischot. Zijn voorouders runden er al sinds de vijftiende eeuw een boerderij. Omwille van zijn wispelturige gezondheid groeide kleine Kristiaan grotendeels op onder de vleugels van zijn grootmoeder in de Fermerijhoeve in Watervoort, Herentals. Kristiaan ging slechts sporadisch naar school. De plantrekkerij keek hij van zijn grootmoeder af, die niet alleen mensen uit de buurt hielp bij het invullen van hun papieren, maar ook niet vies was van sjoemelen…
Op de Fermerij maakte Kristiaan kennis met de Kapucijnen. Die kwamen immers melk halen op de boerderij van zijn grootmoeder. Zij hielpen haar ook met foefelen tijdens de oorlog. De grootmoeder van Kristiaan had een heel grote hoeve met heel veel beesten. Om de Duitsers buiten te houden, verzon ze tot vier keer toe een mond- en klauwzeerplaag, waardoor de hoeve telkens in quarantaine werd geplaatst en ze dus buiten bereik van de Duitsers konden blijven.
Uiteindelijk trok Kristiaan van de Fermerij naar het klooster. Toen het oude klooster in 1990 tot een rustoord voor Kapucijnenpaters werd omgebouwd, was er plots geen plaats meer voor hem. Kristiaan verhuisde naar een bouwvallig boerderijtje, waar hij 22 jaar woonde. Momenteel verblijft Kristiaan in een klooster in Herentals, maar daar is hij praktisch nooit. Nadat hij zijn taken in het klooster heeft volbracht is hij steeds op de baan.
Al sinds 1949, hij was toen 20, maakt Kristiaan dus deel uit van de orde der Kapucijnen. Precies 150 jaar geleden, in 1868, waren zij de eersten om zich toe te leggen op het sociaal werk met circusartiesten, foorkramers en woonwagenbewoners. Zoals Kristiaan hier vertelt, was dat absoluut nodig, want zoveel mensen waren grote sukkelaars, die met niets in orde waren.
Het hele land reisde Kristiaan voor hen af: eerst met de fiets, later met de brommer, nu al met zijn 14de auto. Meestal een minibusje, trouwens, want daar kon hij ook in slapen. Zijn engagement was al die tijd bovendien vrijwillig, wat het alleen nog maar indrukwekkender maakt. Hij gaf ooit een jaar les, geen godsdienst maar wel zedenleer. Die welwillendheid typeert de pater. Maar een vast inkomen had hij nadien niet. Zijn centen verdiende hij door ’s nachts te gaan werken in een labo in Olen, waar hij de temperatuur moest bewaken van allerlei proefbuisjes.
Kristiaan was een ‘fixer’, iemand die papieren en vergunningen mee in orde hielp brengen, en zelfs scholen en internaten zocht voor de kinderen.
De temperatuur opmeten, dat is ook zijn specialiteit als circuspater. Kristiaan was en is één en al luisterend oor. Als pater bestond zijn job uiteraard ook uit religieuze ondersteuning. Circusmensen en foorkramers waren bijna allemaal christenen, maar omdat ze rondtrokken hadden ze geen vaste kerk en waren ze bijna nergens welkom. Rent a priest avant la lettre: dat was pater Kristiaan. Zo vormde hij meerdere Malters op hetzelfde moment en ook met de Ronaldo’s heeft hij een nauwe band.
Hun kerk, dat was de chapiteau. De plek waar circusartiesten zich het meest thuis voelen en waarin ze dus ook de grote gebeurtenissen uit hun leven willen vieren. Bidden, lachen en treuren: dat doen ze allemaal samen, samen in de tent. Zoals het echte circassiens betaamt wordt zelfs een uitvaartplechtigheid een speciale act…
Het circus is bij uitstek een internationale business. In ieder land waren er wel ‘circuspaters’ zoals Kristiaan, die in de marge van het circusfestival in Monaco jaarlijks bijeenkwamen om ervaringen uit te wisselen. Die circusaalmoezeniers hadden vele religieuze overtuigingen: Rooms-katholieken, anglicanen, lutheranen, calvinisten, orthodoxen, oecumenen…
Kristiaan was ook close met de circusfamilie Pauwels, die een joodse achtergrond had. Daar draaide Kristiaan zijn hand niet voor om. In december 2017 begroef hij nog Charles Pauwels, net zoals hij eerder diens joodse vrouw Cathy Eötvös (bijnaam: Anjoka) naar het graf begeleidde. Alle ‘godgelovige mensen’ waren voor Kristiaan gelijk.
Pater Kristiaan kende de ‘truken van de foor’. Omgaan met al die gebroken huwelijken en buitenechtelijke kinderen uit het circus? Dat was zijn specialiteit, ook al vertegenwoordigde hij de kerk.
Om de vaak precaire levensomstandigheden van circusartiesten en foorkramers draaglijk te houden, mocht er wel wat gesjoemeld en gefoefeld worden.

‘Het is nooit bij mij opgekomen: jongen, waar ben je aan begonnen?’, blikt Kristiaan terug. ‘Ik heb altijd veel plezier gehad.’ Maar aan alle mooie liedjes komt ooit een eind: met zijn 90 lentes zal de circuspater ooit de fakkel moeten doorgeven – al wil hij zelf doorgaan tot hij niet meer kan. Een opvolger vinden, die dan ook nog eens het vertrouwen weet te winnen van het circus- en kermisvolk, loopt echter niet van een leien dakje…
Door zijn drukke agenda raakt de pater zelf niet meer in een circusvoorstelling. Ook al trouwen de jongeren niet zo makkelijk meer en ook al is het contact verminderd, toch heeft hij minder tijd. Waar zijn terrein vroeger veel kleiner was, moet hij nu een veel grotere gebied bedienen en legt hij verre afstanden af.
Als vertrouwenspersoon en helpende hand kan hij de ziel van het circus beter verwoorden dan wie ook. Het dubbele gezicht van de clown – een lach, een traan – is voor hem de essentie van het circus. Al is de impact van circus nog anders bij toeschouwers dan bij artiesten zelf…
Na anderhalf uur praten kunnen we alleen maar concluderen: zijn enthousiasme is groot, maar zijn nederigheid ook. Als we hem tot slot vragen wat de circuspater als zijn grootste talent ziet, ontwijkt hij de vraag. ‘Ik heb geen talenten. Er zijn voor de mensen, en zolang ik kan dat ook graag doen.’
