Victor Gombert (86), beter bekend als Toto Chabri, was wereldwijd een van de meest bekende august-clowns. Hij toerde in alle continenten, maar amper in België. Voor de reeks Living Circus Treasures graven hij en zijn vrouw Nora in hun geheugen, met verbazingwekkende verhalen over hoe ze elkaar leerden kennen, ballerinascènes en het internationale succes.

In de reeks Living Circus Treasures gaan journalist Filip Tielens en Mui-Ling Verbist van Circuscentrum op de koffie bij een ‘levende legende’ uit het circusveld. Na hun bezoekjes bij Circus Jhony, Patricia De Jonghe, Harry Malter en pater Kristiaan Van der Linden was het deze keer de beurt aan Toto Chabri.
Niet veel verderop, in Sint-Agatha-Berchem, werd Victor in 1932 geboren als zoon van Leon Gombert en Alice Chabre. Victor was enig kind. Zowel zijn grootouders als zijn ouders waren actief in het circus (lees meer over de circusdynastie achter Toto Chabri). Zijn grootouders langs vaders kant runden Circus Sosman, maar dat bestond niet meer toen de kleine Victor werd geboren. Zijn ouders verwierven internationale bekendheid als clownscollectief Les Gomberts en later Les Chabri, zoals Victor hier vertelt.
Een eigen circuscarrière lag dus voor de hand. Toch werd Victor als tiener niet bijster veel ingeschakeld in het circus: hij trad pas voor het eerst op met het familiecircus, Circus Luxor, toen hij 16 was, in Ierland. Zijn vader wilde immers alle opties voor hem openhouden: de jonge Victor moest balletles volgen en piano studeren aan het Conservatorium in Brussel, waar hij een eerste prijs behaalde.
Toch werd Victor, als clown Toto Chabri, een wereldberoemd artiest die goed zijn boterham verdiende. Al heerste er volgens Victor geen vedettencultuur in het circus, in tegenstelling tot de popmuziek van nu en haar inwisselbare sterretjes, waar hij bijzonder kritisch voor is, omdat zij het metier van de showbusiness niet beheersen.
En als er één iets was waarover Victor beschikte, was het wel metier. Victor speelde mee in het clownstrio van zijn ouders. Het was de tijd van Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire en de grote Amerikaanse muzikale komedies, waar de circusfamilie naar opkeek. Zijn andere grote helden waren Charlie Chaplin en Grock, de Zwitserse acrobaat, muzikant, clown en componist. Victor heeft heimwee naar die tijd, toen clowns nog als trio optraden, allerlei kunstvormen combineerden en de lach niet moesten veroveren door lukraak publiek uit de tribunes de piste in te sleuren.
In het clownstrio nam Victor de rol in van de ‘august’, in tegenstelling tot zijn vader, die fungeerde als ‘witte clown’. Victor legt hier nog even uit wat het verschil is tussen beiden, en waarom het zo belangrijk is dat een august beschikt over – wat hij noemt – de ‘vis comica’, een komische inborst. Wat je echter niet mag verwarren met ridiculiteit!
Victor beschouwt circusartiesten niet als ‘createurs’ (makers), maar als artiesten die het clowneske repertoire (her)interpreteren. Al ging hij zelf toch graag nét een stapje verder. Dat kon hij ook, door zijn expertise als danser en muzikant. Dan kan je het publiek al eens vermaken, zoals in zijn befaamde ballerina-act.
Andere favoriete acts van Victor waren ‘miroir brisé’ (de entree van de gebroken spiegel) en ‘charge et décharge’ (de entree van de verhuizers). Belangrijk bij zijn optredens als clown Toto Chabri waren zijn kostuum en maquillage. En daarin wou hij afstand nemen van de ‘Angelsaksische stijl’ van groteske outfits en schmink, die volgens Victor enkel tot doel hadden om het publiek te laten schrikken en makkelijk te laten lachen.
Victors muzikale talent speelde een belangrijke rol in de Zwitserse veroveringspoging die hij (toen met zijn familie aan het werk bij Circus Knie) in 1955 deed bij Nora Dedessus Le Moutier (die met haar familie speelde bij Cirque de France). Nora is nu nog steeds onder de indruk van Victors artistieke avances, zo blijkt.
Maar de circustournees gingen verder en er was een tweede, meer radicale poging nodig om elkaar opnieuw te ontmoeten. Omdat smartphones in die tijd nog niet bestonden, had Victor (toen 33) er niet beter op gevonden om de Zwitserse politie in te schakelen om in contact te komen met Nora (toen 28). Tot grote consternatie van de andere circusartiesten…
Victor en Nora trouwen en hebben samen drie kinderen: Aline, Martine en Alain. Aline doet muzikale jonglerie, vooral op cruiseschepen. Martine werkt in Noorwegen bij Circus Agora. En Alain is na tien jaar in het circuscircuit een andere weg opgegaan: hij is nu doctor in de fysica aan de ULB. ‘Het is een verrader’, lacht Victor, die wel apetrots is.
Toen ze een koppel werden, hielp Nora – die zelf ook muzikaal was aangelegd – mee in het clownsnummer van Victors familie. Het was een kleine rol, tot plots Victors vader stierf: op één namiddag tijd moest Nora inspringen en de hele scène leren. Sinds dat moment waren Victor en Nora naast in hun dagelijkse leven ook onafscheidelijk in de piste.
Samen zouden ze de hele wereld rondreizen – onder meer dankzij zijn talenkennis: Victor spreekt liefst acht talen. Ze speelden overal, behalve dan in België – op twee maanden na. Volgens Victor was er toch nog een verschil tussen de Belgische top en de wereldtop – twee keer raden waartoe hij zichzelf rekent…
Die trots is terecht natuurlijk, als je kan optreden in The Ed Sullivan Show en in 2005 uit handen van Prins Rainier een prijs krijgt voor je carrière op het circusfestival van Monte Carlo.
Als icoon van het traditionele circus zijn we ook benieuwd of Victor het hedendaagse circus op de voet volgt. Wanneer hij kan, gaat hij kijken, zo blijkt. Al heeft hij toch een belangrijke boodschap voor de nieuwe generatie: wees minder arrogant en respecteer de traditie!
In 2012 speelden Victor en Nora hun laatste seizoen in Denemarken – Victor was dan al bijna 80 jaar oud. Dat afscheid stemde hem wel niet erg vrolijk. ‘Ik mis het nog steeds’, zegt hij. ‘Waarover moet ik nu praten met mijn buurman? Toch niet over hoe goed de wortelen in de tuin groeien? Mijn enige passie is en blijft de showbusiness.’
Voor we vertrekken, willen we nog graag enkele zaken weten van Victor. Hoe definieert hij circus? Wordt het circus wel genoeg naar waarde geschat? En zou hij, als hij zijn leven opnieuw kon beginnen, terug kiezen voor een carrière in het circus?
