Een redactielid van Circusmagazine laat zijn of haar licht schijnen op de wonderlijke (circus)wereld. Klom deze keer in de pen: Maarten Verhelst.
Beleef weer meer, zo heet de campagne van de Vlaamse overheid om mensen weer volop naar cultuur te doen afzakken. Want wat blijkt? Zowel cultuurbezoek als actieve cultuurparticipatie komt slechts mondjesmaat terug op gang. Vooral bij de occasionele cultuurbezoekers lijkt de ‘gewoonte’ om cultuurevents in te plannen en tickets te boeken doorbroken.
Het viel inderdaad op dat de twee circusfestivals die ik de afgelopen maanden bezocht – Smells Like Circus in Gent en CIRKL in Leuven – quasi niet konden pronken met uitverkochte voorstellingen. Voor het eerst kon je tot vlak voor aanvang van een internationaal topspektakel nog kaartjes bemachtigen. Dat voelde raar aan, maar was wel fijn. Eindelijk waren het niet enkel de plan- en dwangmatige cultuurbelevers, met maanden op voorhand aangeschafte tickets, die onder het tentzeil of in de theaterzaal iets unieks meemaakten. Eindelijk kregen ook de verstrooide professoren en notoire telaatkomers van deze wereld de kans om een voorstelling te bekijken.
Zitten mensen post-corona nog met een angst om uit hun kot te komen? Willen ze liever niet opeen gepropt met een bende wildvreemden dezelfde lucht in- en uitademen? Misschien. Uit eigen ondervinding vermoed ik echter dat de oorzaak elders ligt: er is momenteel gewoon te veel te doen. Mensen moeten kiezen tussen een opendeurdag, een communiefeest, een familiefeest, een festival, een langverwachte première, een bedrijfsfeest, een pokeravond, een weekendje Ardennen, een trouwfeest, een voetbaltornooi, een rommelmarkt, een kermis, een scoutsmaaltijd, een opleiding en een dagje zee. En dat allemaal in hetzelfde weekend.
In die bikkelharde concurrentiestrijd om onze schaarse vrije tijd moet cultuur eventjes het onderspit delven. Het zal zich allemaal wel weer zetten. Binnen enkele maanden is de inhaalrace na twee jaar corona gelopen en komen er als vanzelf weer gaten in de agenda die opgevuld worden met een broodnodige portie cultuur. Al is het dan terug herfst en duiken er ongetwijfeld nieuwe virussen op…
De hamvraag van deze post-coronatijd is niet of en wanneer we terug met z’n allen naar de cinema zullen trekken, wel of we überhaupt iets geleerd hebben van corona. Waar is de verstilling, vertraging, vermindering? Waar is de rust? De wandelingen? Het reizen in eigen streek? Het nietsdoen? De volkomen lege weekends en vliegtuigvrije blauwe hemels? Waar zijn de positieve effecten van de lockdowns? De effecten die onze jachtige westerse wereld zo megahard nodig had.
Het ziet ernaar uit dat we na een exceptionele wereldwijde pauze – die, begrijp me niet verkeerd, ook tal van negatieve effecten had – zijn teruggekeerd tot de orde van de dag: verbruiken, verspillen, consumeren. Hollen, rennen, racen. Kopen, betalen, beleven. Rijden, vliegen, vervuilen. Hoelang gaan we het deze keer uithouden? Hoe vaak kunnen we met onze kop tegen de muur lopen? Hoeveel catastrofes hebben we nodig om een échte, blijvende gedragsverandering te ondergaan?
