Esam S. Turkii is circusartiest en circusdocent aan de Palestijnse Circusschool. Het afgelopen half jaar draaide hij als ECS-vrijwilliger mee met Cirkus in Beweging in Leuven.
Welk nieuws heeft je recent boos of bang gemaakt?
Ik word zowel bang als boos wanneer ik het nieuws over mijn land Palestina zie. Ik ben ook bang dat ik in de gevangenis gegooid word wanneer ik terugga – ik heb het al zien gebeuren bij verschillende van mijn vrienden.
Wat is typisch jou?
Ik ben een eenvoudig persoon. Het geeft me bijvoorbeeld veel energie als ik iemand kan helpen. Ik glimlach elke dag. Mijn passie is circus, ik hou ervan op een podium te staan. Ik wil altijd nieuwe culturen ontdekken en mensen leren kennen van over heel de wereld.
Welke voorstelling zal je nooit vergeten?
Mijn eigen show. Het betekent zoveel voor mij. Ik voel dat ik een boodschapper ben. In mijn voorstelling probeer ik mensen te doen begrijpen hoe het is om Palestijn te zijn. Ik doe het niet met woorden, maar met mijn lichaam.
Wanneer heb je voor het laatst gehuild?
Vorige week moest ik bijna huilen toen ik beelden zag van een kind, Ahmad Manasreh, dat door Israëlische soldaten is neergeschoten in de gevangenis.
Welke posters hingen als kind in je kamer?
Ik had een poster van een witte duif in een kooi.
Wat is je grootste prestatie?
Ik ben erg trots op mijn show omdat ik het gevoel heb dat ik op die manier iets kan betekenen voor mijn land
Waar heb je spijt van?
Het spijt me dat ik mijn studie psychologie niet afgemaakt heb.
Wat is je meest ergerlijke eigenschap?
Ik neem soms te snel beslissingen.
Wat is het dat mensen vaak verkeerd voor hebben van jou?
Dat gebeurt eigenlijk nooit. Ik ben een heel open persoon, een open boek, dus mensen zien direct wie en wat ze voor zich hebben.
Wat is je mooiste jeugdherinnering?
Op mijn veertiende won ik een worstelkampioenschap in Frankrijk. Ik was zo fier!
Welk talent wil je graag bezitten?
Ik zou heel graag kunnen boksen en duiken.
Heb je een concreet voorstel om onze planeet te redden?
Minder vlees eten. Daarnaast – iets minder concreet – zou de haat uit onze wereld moeten verdwijnen, de aarde moet een vredevolle planeet zijn zonder oorlogen. Pas wanneer er wereldvrede is kunnen we echt iets doen aan de gezondheid van de aarde.
Wat is je dierbaarste bezit?
Mijn moeder, zonder twijfel. Ik heb zoveel respect voor haar; ze werkte keihard om haar kinderen op te voeden.
Wat in je dagelijkse leven geeft je een moment van geluk?
Wanneer ik zie dat mensen van elkaar houden, elkaar appreciëren en respecteren.
Wie of wat inspireert jou?
De circusschool inspireert me echt en houdt me op het juiste spoor. Vroeger liep ik een beetje verloren, maar dankzij de circusschool heb ik mijn levensdoel gevonden.
Welke fouten blijf je maken?
Soms heb ik geen zin om mij op te warmen voor een circusles en dan blesseer ik mezelf. En wanneer ik geblesseerd ben, kan ik moeilijk rusten en blijf ik tegen beter weten in circussen.
Wat wil je je kinderen meegeven?
Mijn circuservaring. En ik zou hen ook verschillende culturen willen laten zien.
Laatste serie die je gebingewatched hebt?
Ik kijk graag naar historische films of series. De laatste die ik verslond was ‘The Last Kingdom’.
Wat zou je voor nog geen miljoen willen doen?
Stoppen met circus.
Waar ben je dankbaar voor?
Je kon het misschien al uit dit interview opmaken, maar ik ben zo dankbaar voor het circus. Het maakte mijn leven zo anders dan een doorsnee Palestijns leven. Het opende vele deuren, gaf me veel kansen en bovenal maakt het me elke dag gelukkig.
Hoe wil je herinnerd worden?
Als iemand die iets veranderde voor zijn land. Via zijn lichaam en via circus. Ik geloof erin dat circus iets kan veranderen aan de huidige Palestijnse toestand.
