Benefietavond (met circus): HIV ontrafelen

Het volledige onderzoeksteam van het translationeel hiv-onderzoekscentrum van de UGent organiseert in samenwerking met STR8FW vzw een benefietavond t.v.v. het verdere onderzoek rond hiv.
Er is een lange weg afgelegd sinds het hiv-virus in 1981 “ontdekt” werd. Dankzij de grote inspanningen van onderzoekscentra in universiteiten en in de industrie werden meer dan 20 hiv-remmers op de markt gebracht. Door de dagelijkse inname van die medicatie is de levensverwachting van de patiënten sterk gestegen. Dat heeft in de zorg tot een totale ommekeer geleid. Het perspectief is niet langer sterven aan hiv, maar leven met hiv. Medicatie kan de ziekte onderdrukken, maar niet genezen.
De recente ontwikkelingen in het hiv-onderzoek suggereren dat het haalbaar moet zijn om van een hiv-besmetting te genezen. Ook nu weer is het aan de universitaire onderzoekscentra om baanbrekend werk te verrichten. De tijd is rijp om een stap verder te zetten in de richting van hiv-genezing.
Met het “Mysterie verder ontrafelen” initiatief wil men de schijnwerpers in Vlaanderen op deze zoektocht naar betere en gerichtere therapieën voor hiv richten. Ter ondersteuning van het onderzoek gaat op zaterdag 29 november 2014 in de UFO van de UGent een prachtig event door. Voor 60 euro krijg je diverse optredens, receptie en dinner (excl. drank).
