Circusplaneet heeft op de openbare verkoop van vrijdag 6 februari 2015 de kerk van de wijk Heldenhulde gekocht, een Gentse volkswijk die beter bekend is onder de naam ‘Malem’. Zo komt het gebouw in handen van het Gentse circusatelier. Met de aankoop van deze tweede locatie vlakbij hun huidige werkplek, begint een nieuw hoofdstuk in de bijna 20-jarige geschiedenis van de organisatie. Circusplaneet wil in dit merkwaardige stuk erfgoed een nieuw hoofdstuk schrijven in de rijke Gentse circustraditie.
“Kerkgebouwen zijn hoog en vele circusactiviteiten hebben hoogte nodig.” zegt Matthias Vermael, coördinator bij de vzw. “Kerken zijn ook inspirerende plekken en dragen een geschiedenis van maatschappelijk engagement en gemeenschapsvorming met zich mee. Een engagement dat ook onze werking typeert en dat we graag willen verderzetten.” Circusplaneet kreeg al van verschillende buurtbewoners enthousiaste reacties: Malem heeft nood aan een sociaal-artistiek initiatief dat bereid is om zijn deuren voor iedereen open te stellen, ongeacht afkomst of financiële draagkracht.
“Die opdracht bekijken we heel breed,” zegt Vermael. “We willen het ruimere Gentse circusveld en de stad Gent iets unieks bieden: repetitieruimte voor circusartiesten van over de hele wereld , een vrijetijdsaanbod voor kinderen uit de buurt, een ontmoetingsruimte voor wijkbewoners, … Daarover willen we ook in dialoog gaan met onze leden, de wijkbewoners, andere organisaties en het stadsbestuur. In de volksmond worden we een ‘circusschool’ genoemd, maar we zien onze rol een stuk breder. Met een aanpak waarbij plezier en doorzettingsvermogen hand in hand gaan, proberen we kinderen en jongeren te leren wat samenwerking, lichaamsbewustzijn en creativiteit inhouden. Via de kunstvorm circus ontdekken kinderen en jongeren stap voor stap wie ze zijn en welke rol ze kunnen spelen als actieve burgers in de samenleving van morgen. Vanuit deze inspiratie nemen we met Circusplaneet ook een positieve rol op in de maatschappij, als alternatief voor negativistisch doemdenken. De kerk van Malem moet een open huis worden waar iedereen zich welkom voelt.”
De aankoop van de kerk wordt gefinancierd met middelen uit verschillende hoeken: Stad Gent heeft de intentie om €100.000 te subsidiëren op basis van het reglement voor aankoop en renovatie van jeugdlokalen. Daarnaast wil Circusplaneet ook een beroep doen op sympathisanten om via het crowdfundplatform ‘Socrowd’ €45.000 te verzamelen. ‘Socrowd’ verdrievoudigt dat bedrag in een renteloze lening. Tot slot is er ook een stuk eigen inbreng en een banklening.
Circusplaneet begint nu te werken aan de plannen voor de herinrichting van dit prachtige gebouw. “We willen de verbouwingen zo snel mogelijk van start laten gaan om het circus in Gent een nieuwe impuls te geven,” zegt Peter Vanwalle, voorzitter van de vzw.
