Rachel Demuynck overleden

Op 25 november 2015 overleed op 93-jarige leeftijd de oud-circusartieste Rachel Demuynck, dochter van de vroeger erg bekende Gentse circusdirecteur Gustaaf Demuynck die gedurende zovele jaren furore maakte op de Halfvastenfoor.
Als enig kind werd Rachel opgevoed door haar grootouders, liep pensionaat en kwam slechts tijdens de vakanties bij het circus. Daarin begon ze op 13-jarige leeftijd. Haar eerste rol was tussen de diverse acts met een plakkaatje het volgende nummer tonen aan het publiek. Ze leerde aanvankelijk draadlopen op één meter hoogte, dat ging, maar ze kon niet draaien en dus deed ze het niet verder. Wel deed ze haar deel aan de kassa, leerde ze jongleren en presenteerde ze vrijheidsdressuur. Ze verscheen in de piste als hogeschoolrijdster Lena Miry en trad op in een muzikaal nummer ‘De Rachellis’. In 1940, toen oom Lievin was gevlucht, verving ze hem in het jongleernummer met haar ouders. Toen ze in het programma van haar vader in 1941 in de Gentse Minardschouwburg haar hogeschoolact op scène vertoonde, was dat niet zonder gevaar met de orkestbak ernaast. Nog hetzelfde jaar verliet ze het ouderlijke circus om bij Circus Libot op te treden.
In 1943 huwde ze met Gentenaar Robert Billiet en samen bouwden ze een transportbedrijf uit. Toen haar man vroegtijdig overleed zette zij de zaak moedig verder. Door heel veel te werken heeft ze in Ledeberg een bedrijf weten uit te bouwen en daarmee bewezen dat circusmensen ook op andere vlakken iets kunnen bereiken. Vorig jaar kreeg ze in het Huis van Alijn nog de trofee Anne-Marie Puttevils voor haar circusverdiensten. Rachel is tot op hoge leeftijd een kranige fiere dame gebleven. Ze werd bewonderd voor de moed waarmee ze diverse tegenslagen wist te overwinnen, want opgeven was er nooit bij. Maar enkele maanden terug werd ze plots ziek en dat werd haar fataal. Het afscheid heeft in intieme familiekring plaats.
