Nieuwe publicatie: sense or non-sense of costumes in circus arts

In januari 2020 organiseerden CARP – het Circus Arts Research Platform – en Circuscentrum tijdens Smells Like Circus een seminarie over de zin en onzin van kostuums in de hedendaagse circuspraktijk. Vandaag is er de Engelstalige digitale publicatie die de bijdragen van de zes sprekers verzamelt. Het is een razend interessant document geworden, dat voor eens en voor altijd duidelijk maakt dat er meer is dan een glitterpakje (klassiek circus) of een versleten jeansbroek (hedendaags circus) om je voorstelling de gewenste uitstraling te geven.
Marie Vandecaveye licht aan de hand van de collectie van het Huis van Alijn enkele Belgische circuskostuums uit de 20ste eeuw toe. Karin Saroh en Marion Guyez praten over het onderzoek naar circuskostuums dat ze voor het Centre National des Arts du Cirque voeren, met name rond innovatie en de representatie van gender (bijvoorbeeld bij vrouwelijke luchtacrobaten). Aline Breucker gaat dieper in op de kostuums en de kapsels die ze voor Side-Show maakte, welke keuzes daarbij nodig waren, en hoe dit hele proces samenhangt met de creatie van de voorstellingen zelf. Anne-Katherine Kunz legt kraakhelder uit waarom je niet vroeg genoeg aan de kostuums – en zeker ook de kleuren ervan – kan beginnen bij het maken van een voorstelling. Lukas Brandl ten slotte heeft het over zijn afstudeeract Alyate en hoe hij van meet af aan op zoek ging naar de juiste outfit om zowel op praktisch als visueel vlak het juiste effect te bekomen.
