Wat je allemaal niet met je haren doen kan! Opsteken in een knotje, een vlecht, een staartje, een punkkapsel, een permanent, of… je kan je ook aan je haren laten ophangen. Het is een in de vergetelheid geraakte discipline die stamt uit het oude circus: de kunst van het ‘haarhangen’. Twee Finse frisse jonge meiden blazen met hun voorstelling ‘Capilotractées’ (Latijn voor aan de haren trekken) die traditie nieuw leven in.
Sanja Kosonen en Elice Abonce Muhonen, met hoge pruiken op, begroeten hun publiek persoonlijk aan de ingang van de zaal en spelen op hun gitaartjes een welkomstlied. We’re into een avondje oubollig cabaret, zo lijkt het even, maar dan gaan de pruiken af en toont het haar zich strak in knot getrokken rond een ijzeren ring. Zo laat de ene zich langzaam omhoog takelen, terwijl de andere steeds meer tegengewichten in de schaal legt en uiteindelijk ook zichzelf. Binnen een abstracte ijzeren tentstructuur haken ze zich met hun haren aan elkaar en aan de steunpilaren vast, zweven ze op en rond een stoel, doen aan koord- of moeten we zeggen ‘haar-lopen’ en hangen ze aan de trapeze, de een bungelend aan de andere haar haren. Pijnloos kan het niet zijn, als je ziet hoe de strakgetrokken haren zelfs hun gezichtspieren tot een hoogst effectieve facelift vertrekken.
Don’t try this at home
Je vraagt je af hoe ze het doen? Het lijkt onmogelijk, maar volgens de fysische wetten kan het dus perfect: één enkel haartje kan in principe een gewicht dragen van 100 gram, voeg verschillende haren samen (zie het als een nylondraadje dat uit vele fijne draadjes bestaat) en een normale bos hoofdhaar kan zo tussen de 5.600 en 8.400 kg dragen zonder de individuele haartjes te breken of de hoofdhuid te beschadigen. Dit gezegd zijnde zouden we dit toch niet meteen aanraden om thuis zomaar eventjes na te doen. Het blijft een kunde die veel oefening vergt. Of zoals een van de bekendste ‘haarhangsters’, Daniela Valoskova, zei: “Ik doe dit nu al twintig jaar en het doet nog altijd pijn.” Kosonen en Muhonen wijden zich twee jaar lang met engelengeduld aan de techniek van het haarhangen, dat al naargelang de bron zijn oorsprong zou hebben in China of Zuid-Amerika. Ze contacteerden experts en sloegen al die goede raad op. Zo maken ze niet voor niets hun haren nat omdat het haar zo elastischer is en minder snel breekt. In het begin hingen ze zich drie seconden aan hun haren op, vervolgens vijf en zo trainden ze langzaam de spieren in hun nek en hun wervelkolom. Dan nog doet het natuurlijk altijd wat pijn, geven ook zij toe. Maar alles is gewenning en elk circuslichaam is op dat vlak veel gewoon.
Meer dan spektakel
Het blijft – alle wetten van de fysica indachtig – onomstotelijk spectaculair én pijnlijk om te zien (we voelen mee aan onze haarwortels!) maar ‘Capilotractées’ biedt meer dan alleen maar spektakel. De voorstelling balanceert charmant en onweerstaanbaar tussen humor en pure esthetiek met zowel referenties aan de warme kleurrijke zelfportretten van Frida Khalo als de uitgepuurde kille cinematografie van Kaurismäki. In ware kamikazestijl gaan de acrobates doorheen het scala van aan modetrends onderhevige kapsels (van de barokke pruikentijd tot langharig hippiegebroed tot headbangend gespuis) én de muziekgeschiedenis (met een medley van, hoe kan het ook anders, de musical ‘Hair’ tot Brel). Spannend én hilarisch tegelijk is hun trapeze-haarhang op de tonen van Presley’s ‘Can’t help fallin’ in love’ (met dien verstande dat de song hier na ‘can’t help fallin’ wordt afgebroken). Maar ook de geschiedenis van het feminisme passeert in al haar gelaagdheden: van de ballerina op pointes als trekpaard, de amazone met het haar als trofee over de vrouw met de baard uit het circusverleden tot een hedendaagse main-à-main die het vrouwelijk schoonheidsideaal (de bikinilijn!) te kakken zet.
‘Capilotractées’ ontvouwt zich zo als een haarfijn en af en toe bij de wilde haren gegrepen spektakel van de bovenste plank dat je een uur lang (figuurlijk voor het publiek, godzijdank) bij de haren grijpt. Meer woordspelingen in één zin zou ongezond zijn.
