De grootste artiesten kennen een bescheiden begin. Geboren in Roeselare, in 1989 nog de middle of nowhere in circusland, leerde Alexander Vantournhout zichzelf jongleren. Niet vanuit een passie voor de kunst, maar simpelweg uit nood aan een hobby na het faillissement van zijn turnclub. De zelfopgeleide jongleur zou een dikke tien jaar later uitgroeien tot specialist van het enkel rad met een stevige eigen visie op circus. Maar laat ons beginnen bij het begin.
Op je twaalfde leerde je jongleren als autodidact. Hoe deed je dat?
Alexander Vantournhout: “Met video’s, er was toen in Roeselare immers nog geen circusschool. Ik moest het doen met video’s en boeken die mijn vader en ik één keer per jaar gingen kopen in Antwerpen. Pas toen ik vijftien was, werd er in Roeselare een circusschool opgericht. Ik mocht daar meteen beginnen lesgeven, wat wel een fijne ontwikkeling was.”
Je bent dus eigenlijk begonnen met circus als hobby. Op welk moment werd het meer dan dat?
“Op mijn zestiende heb ik een beurs gekregen, een soort ondersteuning om een straatshow te maken. Eva Kahan en Matthias Vermael van Circusplaneet hebben die gecoregisseerd. Dat was een solo van vijftien à twintig minuten op straat. Maar toen voelde ik: dit wil ik doen.
Een jaar later stond ik op hetzelfde festival als Dirk Van Boxelaere, zowat de eerste circusartiest van België. Ik ben toen op hem afgestapt en heb hem gevraagd of hij mij wou helpen bij mijn volgende show. Hij wou, en dat werd dan de voorstelling ‘Tournée’. Ik heb die niet veel kunnen spelen omdat ik geblesseerd raakte, maar het maakproces was wel zeer rijk. Dat was eigenlijk mijn eerste aanraking met professioneel circus. Ik ben er op een natuurlijke manier ingerold.”
Niet slecht, op je achttiende al je eerste voorstelling maken.
“Inderdaad, maar ik ben ook altijd heel radicaal geweest. Als ik iets wil, ga ik er tweehonderd procent voor. Dat was toen ook al zo.”
Een tijdje later startte je met je opleiding aan ESAC. Hoe heb je jezelf daarop voorbereid?
“Nog voor het ingangsexamen ben ik terug begonnen met gymnastiek en heb ik danslessen gevolgd. In die tijd kreeg ik ook veel les van Hans Vanwynsberghe. Dat is een heel intelligente jongleur, hij is zelfs bio-ingenieur. Hij heeft mij aanvankelijk zeer sterk beïnvloed. Maar vier maanden voor ESAC heb ik plots beslist dat ik toch niet wou jongleren. Ik vond die kegel als object niet zo interessant. Ik heb dan voor enkel rad gekozen.”
Kan dat zomaar, zonder al te veel voorkennis in een discipline aan ESAC beginnen?
“Inderdaad, ik ben zonder bagage aan ESAC begonnen met het rad. Maar doordat ik in mijn jeugd veel aan sport heb gedaan, had ik een heel goede conditie. Ik kon veel uren kloppen, waardoor ik snel vooruitgang boekte. Dat was waarschijnlijk mijn grootste troef bij het ingangsexamen.”
Je hebt je vervolgens in één discipline gespecialiseerd. Ervaar je dat als een beperking of is die focus noodzakelijk om te kunnen uitblinken in iets?
“Ik heb eigenlijk altijd geprobeerd om meerdere dingen te doen. Zo heb ik aan het ESAC naast het rad ook één keer per week gejongleerd. Ik was wel de enige die dat deed. Eigenlijk werd dat niet zo geapprecieerd. Het ESAC is als een muziekschool: je bent aangenomen als violist, dus je moet je parcours afleggen met die ene viooldocent. Gelukkig had ik een open leraar, Sven Demey. Hij vond het niet erg dat ik naast zijn lessen ook nog jongleerde. Artistiek gezien was hij ook meer geëngageerd dan de andere docenten.”
Dat lijkt me ideaal voor jou. Je eindproject, ‘Don’t Run Away, John’, getuigde ook van een eigen artistieke visie. De voorstelling werd opgevoerd in “een kale ruimte, ontdaan van alles wat overbodig is”. Een kritiek op je opleiding?
“Artistiek gezien was ESAC erg moeilijk voor mij. Er werd enorm in één stijl gedoceerd. Mijn klas werd daarbij nog eens gedomineerd door Franse studenten, wat ook wel een bepaalde stijl met zich meebracht. Ik heb mij echt moeten afzetten tegen het nouveau cirque en het narratief. Zo was mijn solo in het eerste jaar onbewust al heel conceptueel. De docenten hebben geprobeerd om dat te onderdrukken, maar toch was narratief nooit mijn ding.
Als ik nu terugkijk op ‘Don’t Run Away, John’, heb ik daar iets te weinig tijd in kunnen steken. Terwijl ik nog aan ESAC studeerde, was ik al begonnen met de ingangsproeven voor P.A.R.T.S. en daarnaast deed ik mee aan de selecties voor het dansgezelschap Ultima Vez. Maar ik ben wel blij met de keuzes die ik heb gemaakt. Al vonden mijn docenten het nummer niet goed. Ze wilden dat ik de muziek en de kostuums veranderde. Dat is praktisch alles.”
Hoe viel het mee om van ESAC meteen door te starten in P.A.R.T.S.?
“Voor mij was P.A.R.T.S. een heel frustrerende opleiding omdat ik geen danser ben. Ik kwam er terecht tussen ballerina’s die van kindsbeen aan ballet deden. Terwijl zij heel hun leven trainden, leerde ik enkel trucs die ik steeds herhaalde. Fysiek was dat verschil niet zo lastig, maar mentaal wel. Ik had veel moeite met het onthouden van choreografieën. Maar ik heb vaak ’s avonds doorgewerkt en zelfs in de zomer getraind om mijn achterstand weg te werken. Maar na twee jaar had ik er genoeg van en ben ik ermee gestopt.”
Was je periode aan P.A.R.T.S. dan vooral een fysieke training voor jou?
“Nee, je wordt er ook mentaal getraind. Er komt veel denkwerk aan te pas. Het lichaam wordt heel anatomisch benaderd. Op theoretisch vlak worden er ook heel andere competenties verwacht dan in het circus. Iedereen kende daar de dansgeschiedenis al uit het hoofd. Ik had wel een basiskennis over kunst, maar dat was toch bijbenen. Ik moest plots van een Franse circuscontext de overstap maken naar de Vlaams-Amerikaanse filosofie. Als danser moet je dat kennen. Maar het duurde wel even voor ik het onder de knie had.”
Wat heb je na P.A.R.T.S. gedaan?
“Eerst heb ik de tijd genomen om mijn twee opleidingen te verteren, voor een deel in het buitenland. In New York heb ik met Steve Paxton, de uitvinder van de contactimprovisatie, gewerkt. Daarna heb ik in Noorwegen als fysiek acteur meegespeeld in ‘A Clockwork Orange’. Dat was even iets helemaal anders. En vervolgens ben ik beginnen lesgeven aan ACaPA in Tilburg en aan ESAC.”
Hoe bevalt dat lesgeven je?
“Ik doe het wel graag. Liefst groepslessen en liefst artistiek. Het is leuk om kennis door te geven, maar ik zou eigenlijk liever lesgeven in iets dat ik nog niet ken. Trapeze bijvoorbeeld. Maar stel dat eens voor aan de directeur van een circushogeschool.
Als je les geeft in rad moet je vooral veel wachten. Je moet wachten tot de studenten niet meer bang zijn en klaar zijn om je correcties te incorporeren. Er wordt ook weinig gezocht. Het rad is een discipline geworden en niet langer een object van onderzoek. Dat was in mijn tijd wel nog het geval. Circusscholen zijn conservatoria geworden: het gaat hem om het conserveren van disciplines. Er wordt steeds minder ontwikkeld. De circusprogrammator of het publiek ziet uiteindelijk ook niet het verschil tussen origineel en reproductie. De circustoeschouwer herkent geen bewegingstaal, die ziet niet wat nieuw is. Bij dans kan men dat veel beter analyseren. Dat is wel frustrerend. Ik heb het gevoel dat ik niet volledig naar waarde word geschat voor de zoektocht die ik heb ondernomen.”
Laten we het over je nieuwe voorstelling ‘Caprices’hebben. Vanwaar de keuze om rond de muziek van Salvatore Sciarrino te werken?
“Ik heb die muziek eigenlijk per toeval live gehoord in IJsland en ik vond het fantastisch hoe Sciarrino geluiden uit een viool weet te produceren. Drie jaar later heb ik geprobeerd er iets op te maken. Nu, ‘Caprices’is volledig aan muziek gewijd, maar mijn volgende project zal weer iets heel anders zijn.”
De structuur van de voorstelling hangt op aan de drie onderdelen die voor jou noodzakelijk zijn aan circus: virtuositeit, het object en gevaar. Vanwaar die definitie?
“Goh, het is nog een onvolledige definitie. Ik denk dat de definitie van circus is: een zoektocht naar merkwaardigheid. Of het framen van merkwaardigheid. Conventioneler circus bestaat voor mij uit die drie elementen. Als die niet aanwezig zijn, is het geen circus.”
En als deze elementen alledrie aanwezig zijn, is het per definitie circus?
“Ja, dat denk ik. Iemand die rechtstaat op het stuur van zijn fiets en indruk maakt op iemand anders, dat vind ik bijvoorbeeld circus. Of op een skateboard. Zolang het maar geen reproductie is. Dat kan misschien ook wel circus zijn, maar dat vind ik dan minder interessant. De zoektocht is belangrijk.
Ik ben een boek aan het schrijven met mijn eigen bevindingen. Dat is een lopend onderzoek, maar wel gelinkt met deze voorstelling. Met ‘Caprices’is het eigenlijk begonnen.”
Dat virtuositeit noodzakelijk is, spreekt ergens voor zich. Maar hoe zit het met het gevaar. Moet het gevaarlijk zijn voor de artiest of moet het gevaarlijk lijken voor de toeschouwer?
“Ik ben tot mijn voorlopige definitie gekomen vanuit het standpunt van de toeschouwer, maar het gevaar moet toch reëel zijn voor de persoon die er staat. Eigenlijk is het heel gemakkelijk om iets gevaarlijks op scène te zetten. Je moet er niet veel voor doen om een maximaal effect te verkrijgen. Er is bij gevaar ook een minimum aan rationaliteit nodig. Dat vind ik wel leuk. Het maakt circus ook zo toegankelijk. Een mens weet: dat is gevaarlijk. Je ervaart het met heel je lichaam en niet alleen met je hersenen.
In circus is gevaar altijd gecontroleerd gevaar, dat is wel belangrijk. Ik weet wat er zal gebeuren als het fout gaat. Dat is een totaal ander gevaar dan een freerunner die over gebouwen loopt. In circus komt er veel meer techniek bij kijken.
Als performer is het interessante aan gevaar dat je niet weg kunt gaan van jezelf. Je kunt niet iemand of iets representeren. Je representeert jezelf op een heel dichte manier. Bij virtuositeit heb je dat ook. Er is niet veel ruimte voor interpretatie of performen. Het is de performativiteit van jezelf. Je speelt geen rol, er is geen theater mogelijk.”
In de proloog en het Singing in the rain-gedeelte van je voorstelling speel je wel een rol.
“Als ik een fout heb gemaakt met ‘Caprices’is het misschien wel daar. Ik besef nu dat de toeschouwer het heel moeilijk heeft met de overgang van narrativiteit naar abstractie. Misschien heb ik op die momenten er te veel rekening mee gehouden dat ik deze voorstelling voor zowel een dans- als een circuspubliek wilde maken.”
De eerste scène draait om jou en het rad. Jij bent de manipulator van het object. In de laatste scène, waarin je aan je nek wordt opgehangen, lijk jij het object dat wordt bespeeld.
“Het was een bewuste keuze om de proloog qua stijl te linken aan de passage rond Singing in the rain en het rad te verbinden met het laatste deel. Met het rad begin ik als manipulator, maar aan het eind van die scène krijg je meer het gevoel dat het rad zelf beweegt, bijna autonoom.
In de scène waarin ik omhoog word getrokken, wou ik niet gewoon een lijf spelen. Ik wou wegblijven van het morbide van het opgehangen worden. Daarom heb ik voor een actieve pose gekozen. Maar mentaal is het bijna een soort meditatie voor mij.”
Opgehangen worden werkt meditatief?
“Ja, voor mij wel. Iedere seconde waarin je ophangt, lijken er tien. Je ervaart de wereld helemaal anders.”
Je hebt ook wel een bijzondere relatie met je technicus. Hij heeft letterlijk je leven in handen.
“Inderdaad, er is geen beveiliging. Zelfs als hij alleen maar een schokje zou geven, kan dat genoeg zijn om mij te doen vallen. Maar eigenlijk is dat deel het gemakkelijkste van mijn voorstelling. Ik heb er het minste werk aan gehad.”
Wat is de volgende stap in je onderzoek?
“Ik wil weer meer performance gaan doen. Met meer emoties. Iets in de stijl van Xavier Le Roy of Phia Ménard. ‘Caprices’is heel choreografisch. Maar eerst zal ik deze voorstelling spelen. Al weet ik dat ik er niet meer dan twintig voorstellingen van zal kunnen verkopen. ‘Caprices’is niet commercieel gemaakt. Ik kan bijvoorbeeld geen twee dagen na elkaar spelen, omdat ik achteraf zoveel pijn heb aan mijn nek. Ik hang er eigenlijk net iets te lang aan. Maar ik wil ook dat het publiek iets meemaakt dat het daarvoor nog niet heeft gezien. Nu ja, ik ben nog jong en radicaal. Naarmate ik ouder word, zullen mijn voorstellingen wel gematigder en toegankelijker worden.”
