Een gesprek met Karel Creemers, Danny Ronaldo, Arne Sierens en Johan Heldenbergh naar aanleiding van de creatie van ‘Ensor’, de eerste samenwerking tussen Circus Ronaldo en Compagnie Cecilia.
Alleen al door de epische aankondiging als een “hilarische, zwalpende Faustiaanse variété“ klinkt ‘Ensor’ veelbelovend. Daarnaast doet de al even epische cast ons eveneens watertanden: Karel Creemers, Danny Ronaldo en Johan Heldenbergh staan samen op scène in een regie van Arne Sierens. ‘Ensor’ vertelt het verhaal van Guido (rol van Johan Heldenbergh), een zoekende acteur/regisseur die de strijd aanbindt met zijn zelfgeschreven personages in een voorstelling-in-een-voorstelling “over de onnozele liefde” waar de centrale, amoureuze ontmoeting tussen Antonio (rol van Danny Ronaldo) en Irene/Juliette niet plaatsvindt omdat die laatste niet komt opdagen. Het verhaal staat stil. Antonio, die zijn bestaansrecht ontleent aan de voorziene ontmoeting met Juliette, staat er bij voor spek en bonen. Als Romeo zonder Julia. Net zoals Pinoccio dat doet met Giuseppe, gaat Antonio een gesprek aan met Guido. Over de zin van zijn leven. Over de zin van het theater. En over de zin van de liefde, waar hij rotsvast blijft in geloven. De Faustiaanse dialoog is doorspekt met een lange processie van nevenpersonages zoals de Dokter, de Kapitein en de Dood, stuk voor stuk vertolkt door Karel Creemers. Maar voor u de draad helemaal bent kwijtgeraakt: ‘Ensor’ is vooral het verhaal van vier mannen die de innerlijke strijd aanbinden tussen hun jeugdige geloof in de liefde en het theater en de realiteit van hun veertiger jaren.
Wat, in godsnaam, is een Faustiaanse variété?
Arne Sierens: “Het publiek zit aan twee kanten van een langwerpige scène die aan weerszijden begrensd is door twee kleine huizekes. Op die manier is de vertelling een opeenvolging van constante verschijningen van personages, variété dus.”
Johan Heldenbergh: “En tussen die verhalen door lopen er verschillende circusacts.”
Danny Ronaldo: “Al zijn het eerder flitsen van circusacts die met de wind komen aangewaaid.”
Arne: “Reminiscenties, vage herinneringen.”
Karel Creemers: “Uitgefilterde clownsketches.”
Johan: “Alle clichés van het circus samen, eigenlijk.”
Arne: “Ja, de typische klassiekers, zonder dat die worden aangekondigd. Het zijn eerder dingen die gewoon gebeuren.”
Zonder dat de vertelling wordt onderbroken?
Arne: “Ja, inderdaad. Eerder als opvulling van de gaten die vallen omdat het verhaal stilstaat. Zo is er ook een noodzaak voor die acts.”
Danny: “Een beetje zoals in de commedia dell’arte.”
Arne: “Het is dus eerder een soort van onbewuste variété. Het valt uit elkaar, het is zinloos. Er is geen einde. Julia is er niet, dus gaat Romeo maar gewoon een beetje op een stoel zitten wachten.”
Johan: “De avonturen van Suske…” (allen lachen)
Arne: “Drie eenzame Suskes die het eigenlijk al opgegeven hebben.”
Johan: “Daarnaast is ‘Ensor’ Faustiaans in de zin dat de verleiding van Mefisto een thema is. Guido (gespeeld door Johan Heldenbergh) probeert Antonio, het personage dat hij zelf schreef (gespeeld door Danny Ronaldo) ervan te overtuigen dat hij niet moet wachten op de ware liefde. Want die bestaat nu eenmaal niet, dat weet ik uit ondervinding.”
Johan, wat leer jij van met Danny en Karel op een scène te staan?
Johan: “Door naar hen te kijken word ik teruggesmeten naar iets wat ik eigenlijk altijd al wilde kunnen. De muzikale clowns waren voor mij als kind de top. Die waren atletisch, deden mij lachen en ontroerden me. Maar ja, als manneke in Ledeberg kwam ik nooit met het circus in contact. Ook Danny of Karel moeten maar gewoon tegen een paal leunen en kijken op die bepaalde manier om grappig te zijn. Ik krijg als acteur weinig de kans om gewoon tegen een paal te leunen, te kijken, en dat dat genoeg is.”
Kunnen jullie iets vertellen over de goesting van Circus Ronaldo en Compagnie Cecilia om samen te werken?
Danny: “Het is koud in mijn woonwagen en de chauffage werkt niet goed… (hilariteit). Nee, ik voelde al lang van Arne dat hij smoorverliefd is op circus. Ronaldo en Cecilia willen allebei geen oerserieus theater maken. Bij Cecilia is er enerzijds het theater en anderzijds is er de gewone mens die zich herkent in dat theater, waardoor je een soort van dubbel spel krijgt. Ook bij Ronaldo is het er ons niet om te doen de clown te tonen, maar eerder de mens die je herkent in clownscenario’s.”
Hoe heeft dat zich vertaald in de manier van werken?
Arne: “We hebben in het wilde weg, vanuit circus en vanuit theater, naar elkaar proberen te kijken. We mogen dan inderdaad een andere soort performers zijn, toch zijn we in de eerste plaats op zoek gegaan naar wat ons bindt. Bij Cecilia hebben we natuurlijk ook onze manier van werken, die we hier wel een beetje hebben moeten loslaten. Terwijl we normaal gezien vanuit improvisaties tot een soort verhaal en een personage komen, waren de improvisaties hier vooral een manier om elkaar tegen te komen. Hier ging het om een confrontatie. En om de vraag wat we samen gingen doen, waar we elkaar konden vinden. Eens we elkaar ontmoet hadden, zijn we toch veel opener gaan werken dan anders. In theater heb je de neiging om de dingen te sluiten, in ritme te trekken en muzikaliteit te geven. Om een compositie te maken. Maar in het circus kun je niet alles perfect timen. Wanneer een paard lastig doet, bijvoorbeeld. Je kunt niet voorzien of er applaus zal zijn of niet. Daardoor is het veel moeilijker om een global rhythm in de voorstelling te steken. Er gebeurt veel meer op het moment zelf. Dat is zo schoon in het circus! Voor ‘Ensor’ hebben we geprobeerd om dat te bewaren.”
Danny: “Het gaat inderdaad vooral om de manier van werken die anders is. Wij repeteren eigenlijk hoegenaamd niet.”
Karel: “Wij maken decors.” (lacht)
Danny: “Ja, wij maken decors en wij spreken heel goed af. Wij repeteren wel timing, maar nooit personages of acts. In een repetitie vertrouw ik erop dat ik van Karel ongeveer kan inschatten hoe hij het zal doen wanneer er publiek zit. De eerste voorstelling met een publiek is voor ons altijd een verrassing. Dan zie je pas hoe je medespelers hun personage vormgeven.”
Er wordt vaak gezegd dat creëren in het circus een veel eenzamere en meer individuele aangelegenheid is dan in het theater.
Danny: “Clownerie vind ik een vaak een heel eenzame bezigheid, ja. Bij repetities van Ronaldo gebeurt het soms dat ik Karel anderhalve dag niet zie, dat hij alleen zit te kloppen en bouwen in zijn atelier. En dan komt hij plots met een bakske en met een complete act. Dat zit ook wel een beetje in de geschiedenis van circus: iedere artiest had zijn eigen act, zo ging dat. Al is er vandaag natuurlijk veel meer mengeling en samenspel.”
Arne: “Dat ‘instantgevoel’ hebben we proberen te pakken. Ook al ligt er een partituur, die zit niet heel strak in elkaar. Die openheid was ook een belangrijk criterium in de keuze van het materiaal. Er moet niets vast gevezen worden, alles gebeurt hic et nunc.”
Vandaar ook de keuze voor een verhaal in een verhaal?
Arne: “Ja, inderdaad. De personages weten evenmin wat er moet gebeuren in de vertelling die ze als het ware ter plaatse moeten uitvinden. Er is geen narratieve spanning, alles staat letterlijk stil. De personages moeten iets doen dat ze niet hebben voorbereid. Dat was ook letterlijk de realiteit van de ontmoeting tussen Ronaldo en Cecilia.”
Als circus maken voor Ronaldo steeds een autobiografische daad is omdat kunst en leven nu eenmaal samen gaan, lijkt het autobiografische element hier ook aanwezig te zijn, zij het dan misschien eerder in het verhaal.
Arne: “Dat is ook waarom we elkaar vinden. Ik werk altijd met de autobiografie van de acteur, dat inspireert mij. Wanneer je een verhaal wil vertellen, heeft dat uiteraard te maken met wat in je leeft. Met een trauma of een gevoel. Wanneer een publiek naar een voorstelling komt kijken, kijken ze niet naar een personage, maar wel naar wat die of die acteur doet. Een personage is maar een code. Er komt iemand op, een mens die is verpakt in een personage, maar het is die mens die herkenbaar is. Die echt is.”
Herken jij die verhouding tussen de acteur en zijn personage, Danny?
Danny: “Ja, al zijn wij daar niet zo bewust mee bezig, in circus is dat ook zo. Een clown of een trapezewerker die een act maakt op zijn achttiende en die blijft opvoeren tot zijn achtenvijftigste bijvoorbeeld. Die act verandert omdat hij als mens verandert. In die evolutie zit dus ook een autobiografisch proces en daar komt het publiek ook voor: een mens die vandaag, hier en nu, zijn act doet.”
Arne: “Het virtuoze aspect van een act is niet interessant op zich. Het gaat vooral om iemand die laat zien hoe hij in het leven staat, en bijgevolg om een glimp van hoe hij vindt dat de wereld ineen zit. Het interesseert mij niet of een jongleernummer nu met drie of met 46 ringen is. Ik zit te kijken naar die mens. Hetzelfde geldt voor theater.”
‘Ensor’ wordt omschreven als een ontmoeting tussen theater en circus. Wat betekent dat voor jullie?
Arne: “Theater en circus hebben altijd vrij dicht bij elkaar gelegen. Ook bij Astley gingen paarden en pantomime samen. Het is eigenlijk pas met het ontstaan van het burgerlijk theater van Ibsen bijvoorbeeld, met pluchen zetels en gordijnen en zo, dat circus lage kunst geworden is en verbannen werd uit de theaters. In het begin van de 20ste eeuw heeft de Europese avant-garde herhaaldelijk geprobeerd om opnieuw aansluiting te vinden bij het circus. Bij het lijfelijke. Kijk maar naar Grotowski, Kantor, Artaud, … Ook Peter Brook zei dat de vernieuwing van het theater in de volkskunst ligt. Daar gebeurt het, daar is er contact tussen de speler en zijn publiek. Niet in het aquarium van het burgerlijk theater.”
Danny: “Mensen kwamen naar een voorstelling om zich een ganse avond lang te amuseren. In de Commedia dell’Arte was het de taak van de Lazzi, de clowns, om te zorgen dat de mensen bij het podium bleven staan tussen de bedrijven door.”
Arne: Ook bij Shakespeare. Waarom kwamen de mensen? Voor het schermgevecht. Wat komt de doodgraver doen in ‘Hamlet’? Die wordt opgevoerd omdat de acteur die Hamletspeelde de tijd moest hebben om zich te verkleden. Shakespeare schreef dan snel een komische act om het ijs te breken. De stukken van Shakespeare zitten ook in elkaar als een variété.”
Opvallend is dat het soort theater dat jullie vernoemen zich niet bezig houdt met ons te laten geloven in iets dat er niet is. Het is heel duidelijk dat er theater gespeeld wordt. Ook circus houdt zich niet bezig met de kwestie van de levensechtheid.
Arne: “Jongleurs of clowns maken een uitvergroting van de mens en net daardoor worden ze keihard mens. Een clown vergroot het menselijke zo erg uit dat het heel herkenbaar wordt. Dat lijkt paradoxaal, maar eigenlijk wordt de illusie van levensechtheid gewoon geschrapt. De clown doet niet alsof. Hij staat daar echt, ‘als’ mens, niet ‘alsof’ hij een mens is. Dat is de grote paradox die ik mis in theater, waar acteurs ‘geloofwaardig’ proberen te zijn. Ze blijven hangen in het realisme. Soms kunnen acteurs je doen vergeten dat je in het theater zit, maar dat is zeldzaam. In die zin liggen grote acteurs en grote circusartiesten dicht bij elkaar: ze beheersen allebei de kunst om net die paradox te ‘pakken’, om net die details te isoleren die je als toeschouwer de rest doen vergeten. Een acteur die een personage met een spraakgebrek speelt, bijvoorbeeld. In dat spraakgebrek ligt dan een waarachtigheid waardoor je de ganse tekst slikt en er een ‘echte’ mens verschijnt.”
Wat is volgens jullie het grootse gevaar in de cross-over van circus en theater?
Danny: “Het voornaamste is dat je geen circuselementen begint te gebruiken om daar theater mee te maken. Doen alsof je jongleerkegel een telefoon is, bijvoorbeeld. Kegels zijn nu eenmaal onvermijdelijk circusobjecten.”
Dat gaat dan over datzelfde realisme dat jij beschrijft, Arne?
Arne: “Ja, inderdaad. Terwijl het eerder moet gaan over een soort poëzie.”
Danny: “Absoluut. Circus brengen wil niet zeggen dat je plots iets moeilijks moet gaan doen. Het is eerder iets dat je meedraagt en uitademt.”
Zo onderbreekt virtuositeit in een (hedendaagse) circusvoorstelling ook steeds de vertelling van die voorstelling.
Arne: “Ja, maar dat is ook zo voor theater. Ik hou niet van virtuoze teksten die overladen zijn met betekenis. Die worden sowieso geschrapt. Hetzelfde geldt voor metaforen. Ik wil geen metaforen meer, ik ben metaforen beu. Iets staat dan voor iets anders. En dan zeggen ze: uw theater heeft geen diepgang. Nee. Maar dat is ook een paradox. De reconstructie van de oppervlakte. Keimoeilijk! La réconstruction de la surface. Niet proberen zoeken naar diepgang. Dat absoluut vermijden. Het alleen maar proberen te hebben over de banaliteit van het moment. Zo ontstaat de diepgang vanzelf in plaats van dat je er bewust naar zit te zoeken. Het gaat er om een verbinding tussen het kleine en het grote te bewerkstelligen. Maar je weet nooit op voorhand waar je er in slaagt die verbinding te maken en er plots een bloem opengaat. Jamais.”
Danny: “Het is inderdaad door in die gewone laag te blijven dat dingen de ruimte hebben om zeggingskracht te krijgen. Je kunt alleen maar zorgen dat alle ingrediënten er zijn om een bepaald diner te maken. Dit moet vers zijn, dat moet gemarineerd zijn, dat andere moet zo lang in de ijskast opgesteven zijn. En dan is het wachten. Dat is het mysterie van een voorstelling. Bij Ronaldo zijn we bijvoorbeeld nooit concreet bezig met het creëren van een poëtische scène. Heel vaak ontdekken we de poëzie in de eerste voorstelling, samen met het publiek.”
Is er dan geen bepaalde bril waarmee je het materiaal dat ontstaat op de vloer uit selecteert?
Arne: “Kijk, wij zijn alle vier mannen met een bepaalde leeftijd. Je bent al zoveel jaar getrouwd, je hebt misschien kinderen. En plots vraag je je af waar je staat in je leven. Je probeert telkens iets nieuws uit te vinden, maar je hebt een heleboel littekens en bagage waar je aan blijft plakken en die je je ongedwongenheid doen verliezen. Daarin zijn we elkaar wel tegengekomen, en dat proberen we bloot te leggen. Zo van: laat ons toch proberen om daar van los te komen, op dat podium te kruipen, er vorm aan te geven en het op te lossen, op onze manier. Te lachen met de leegte. Daar zit ook iets bezwerend in.” (lacht)
En de bezwering is dan het theater, het spelen zelf?
Arne: “Absoluut. We bezweren die leegte en proberen iets te delen, in de hoop dat het herkend wordt. In die zin is theater een ritueel.”
Danny: “Het ritueel van een voorstelling is altijd een combinatie van verwondering en herkenning. Iemand doet iets dat je nog niet gezien hebt en je bent verwonderd, maar tegelijkertijd moeten er ook elementen zijn die je herkent. Als je een voorstelling maakt samen met anderen gaat dat ook zo: je verwondert elkaar, maar tegelijkertijd herken je heel wat van jezelf in de ander die tegenover je staat op de scène.”
