Nu kleine mensen in ‘Corteo’ – het nieuwste spektakel van Cirque du Soleil – een belangrijke rol spelen, is het interessant even na te gaan of deze vroeger ook in het circus aan bod kwamen. Circuskenner André De Poorter, zelf ook niet al te groot, grasduint door onze vaderlandse circusgeschiedenis.
Dwergen of lilliputters, benamingen die nu eerder als beledigend overkomen, kwamen vroeger moeilijk in het arbeidscircuit terecht. Toch oefenden ze een zekere aantrekkingskracht uit op het volk, waardoor ze gemakkelijk als attractie werden opgevoerd in kermistenten of in het circus. Zo stelde André Claessens in zijn foortentje vanaf 1872 Maria en Casimir Mouche, respectievelijk 83 en 77 cm groot, voor. Dat duurde tot Maria plots begon te groeien. Vanaf 1934 was foorman Alphonse Mouteau enkele jaren eigenaar van La Villa des Nains. Daarin werd door lilliputters een kleine show opgevoerd.
De bekendste figuur is wel Prinses Paulina geweest. Dit meisje uit Ossendrecht werd in 1880 op tweejarige leeftijd door haar ouders toevertrouwd aan Gentenaar Emile Grandsart. Ze was toen 37 cm groot en woog slechts 2,75 kg. Een jaar later en 2 cm gegroeid, showde Grandsart haar op de kermis samen met een reus van 2,30 meter.
Paulina’s oudste zus, Cornelia Musters, huwde met Joseph Verschueren, een man met commercieel talent. Ze namen het kleine meisje in hun gezin op en openden een klein maar rijkelijk versierd theater. Tijdens korte voorstellingen stelde Joseph haar aan het publiek voor. Dat zorgde voor een groot contrast, want de man woog zelf 100 kg. Prinses Paulina zou uiteindelijk amper 60 cm groot worden, waardoor haar naam ook in het Guinness Book of Records terechtkwam. In tegenstelling tot veel andere kleine mensen was ze goed geproportioneerd. Ze zag eruit als een pop.
Van haar manager-schoonbroer leerde ze enkele acrobatentoeren en ze sprong van een stoel die tweemaal groter was dan zijzelf. Tot 1893 kon men Paulientje bewonderen op de foor. In 1894 verscheen ze op het Gentse St. Pietersplein met Circus Lockhart. Ze beleefde er een stormachtige bijval. In het wit gekleed en gezeten in een koetsje, getrokken door twee paardjes, kwam ze de piste binnengereden. Ze vertoonde enkele evenwichtstoeren, speelde met gewichten, zong en danste. Gelijktijdig engageerde Circus Krembser in het naburige hippodroom als tegenwicht de Colibris, negen lilliputters die optraden als zangers, toneelspelers, muzikanten en acrobaten. Negen jaar later waren de Colibris weer voor een week naar Gent uitgenodigd voor Circus Dekock.
Prinses Paulina, die vier talen sprak (Nederlands, Frans, Duits en een beetje Engels), deed tijdens haar verblijf in Gent haar Eerste Communie in de kapel van Poortakker aan de Oude Houtlei, waarna de bisschop haar het vormsel toediende. Dit bezorgde haar natuurlijk extra publiciteit. Niet lang nadien kreeg ze een aanbieding voor New York. Daar overleed ze in haar hotelkamer op 15 februari 1895.
In 1951 presenteerde het Koninklijk Circus Brussel het Lilliput Circus van manager Charly Gnidley. In de meest diverse nummers traden kleine mensen op als dansers, muzikanten, trapezisten, clowns en acrobaten. Het Belgische Circus De Jonghe telde in 1951 onder zijn artiesten een trapeziste van 87 cm en een komiek van 82 cm groot. Toen het circus in Namen stond, werden deze twee Oostenrijkers, Elfi en Walter, er in de echt verbonden. In 1953 bestond De Jonghes programma gedeeltelijk uit een Lilliputtershow en acht jaar later presenteerden ze de 8 dwergen Eduardini uit Spanje.
Ons land heeft in de eerste helft van de 20ste eeuw ook enkele beroemde kleine mannen als clowns in het circuswereldje gekend: de broers Pol en Polyte Deraes, de dwergclown Tom Bruyneel en ten slotte Nandje en Franske.
