Het 25-jarig bestaan van Cirkus in Beweging, de nieuwe zalen van Woesh, Circolito, Salto en Circusplaneet of het vernieuwde Circusdecreet… Redenen genoeg om Jonas Van Soom (Cirkus In Beweging), Matthias Vermael (Circusplaneet), Els Degryse (Woesh), Lieven Leemans (Circolito), Daan Yperman (Ell Circo D’Ell Fuego) en Veerle Bryon (Circus Zonder handen) uit te nodigen voor een genuanceerd kringgesprek over circusateliers in Vlaanderen. Maar ook over Victor Orban, hamburgers bakken in de Quick en openluchtzwembaden.
Jullie ateliers zijn uitgegroeid van amateuristische structuren vol gemotiveerde vrijwilligers naar volwassen organisaties met loonbarema’s, dossiers en véél vergaderingen. Hoe bewaar je de dynamiek?
Lieven Leemans: “Dat is niet gemakkelijk. In het begin was ik de enige in dienst en dan maakt het niet uit hoeveel uur je doet. Als je meer mensen in dienst neemt kan je uiteraard niet verwachten dat iedereen zo gek is om maar uren te blijven kloppen. Voorlopig komen wij er nog altijd goed uit, en wil iedereen in ruil voor flexibiliteit niet te streng zijn of haar uren tellen.”
Daan Yperman: “Bij Ell Circo D’Ell Fuego (ECDF) is institutionaliseren een van onze grootste angsten, maar anderzijds komt er bij professionaliseren een zekere verantwoordelijkheid kijken, bijvoorbeeld in verband met veiligheid. Dat vergt een stuk structurering en die balans is zeer moeilijk.”
Jonas Van Soom: “Ik gemerkt dat toen wij professioneler werden veel van die vrijwillige drive van het begin wegviel. Het duurt even voor dat terugkomt, maar op het moment dat je organisatie goed draait en iedereen de ruimte heeft om zijn eigen ding te doen, dan lukt dat wel.”
Veerle Bryon: “Ik denk dat wij een bijzondere vrijwilligersorganisatie zijn omdat bij ons bijna iedereen betaald wordt, ook voor kleine klusjes. Dat heeft te maken met ons publiek. Wij werken met jongeren uit heel kwetsbare omgevingen, die thuis vaak ook bijdragen. Wij hebben er dus voor gekozen om ze voor alles wat ze voor ons doen in verhouding te betalen. Dat zijn geen grote bedragen, maar anders gaan ze in de Quick hamburgers bakken…”
Els Degryse: “Wij moeten er zelf heel hard over waken, omdat het vaak in de verwachting van de jongeren zit om steeds meer en steeds jonger voor alles betaald te worden. Op een bepaald moment krijg je meer subsidies en wat vroeger gemakkelijk gratis werd gedaan kan plots niet meer. Het is zoeken geweest om dat er toch weer wat in te krijgen. We blijven het belangrijk vinden dat er dingen vrijwillig worden gedaan. Ook door de mensen die vast in dienst zijn.”
Matthias Vermael: “Bij Circusplaneet brengt dat op een manier ook rust. De tijd dat iedereen een halftijds contract had maar voltijds moest presteren, is gelukkig voorbij. Duurzaamheid op lange termijn betekent dat we professionals op een correcte manier moeten verlonen.”
Jullie hoofdbezigheid blijft het aanbieden van de wekelijkse circuslessen. De kwaliteit van die lessen staat of valt met de kwaliteit van de lesgevers. Hoe houden jullie je lesgevers gemotiveerd?
Lieven: “Je hebt wat artiesten nodig om je circusatelier op smaak te brengen, om de specialisatielessen te geven en om de leerlingen naar te laten opkijken. Maar geef ze geen vast contract met veel uren, of ze gaan lopen. Onze lesgevers die dat al lang doen genieten van al die gasten die op een bepaald moment beter worden dan henzelf. ‘Ik heb die nog leren jongleren en die gaat nu naar een circushogeschool!’”
Veerle: “Het belang van circuseducatie in het leven van de mensen die bij ons komen trainen, houdt de lesgevers bij ons gemotiveerd. Het kan wel dat mensen die een aantal jaar multicircus (lessenreeks waarin diverse circustechnieken worden aangeleerd, red.) hebben gegeven zeggen: ‘Het is goed geweest.’ Die gaan dan iets totaal anders doen, of nemen een andere functie op binnen de organisatie. Lesgeven kan echt wel energievretend zijn.”
Daan: “Dit geldt natuurlijk voor alle jobs, maar iedereen is op zoek naar een meerwaarde. Ik denk dat geen enkel atelier fortuinen betaalt, dus dat zal het niet zijn. In het begin kun je je motivatie halen uit de leerlingen die beter worden, maar wij proberen die meerwaarde ook op andere plaatsen te zoeken: wij zetten bijvoorbeeld sinds kort een denkparcours op met de docenten om ook beleidsmatig mee te denken. Je moet als organisatie altijd nadenken over wat je je mensen biedt en blijft aanbieden.”
Jonas: “Wij geven met drie docenten les en ik heb het gevoel dat dat helpt om elkaar te blijven uitdagen en stimuleren. Als het niet werkt moet je jezelf heruitvinden, vanuit de organisatie maar ook als lesgever. Nieuwe richtingen uitgaan, nieuwe uitdagingen vinden, en bij circus is dat nog onontgonnen terrein.”
Is het voor jullie een must dat een lesgever de Formation Pédagogique (FP) in Brussel of de opleiding tot Begeleider in de Circuskunsten (BIC) heeft gevolgd?
Matthias: “Die diploma’s op zich zijn niet belangrijk, maar ze zijn soms wel een goeie garantie als het gaat om de competenties.”
Els: “Wij hebben die luxe niet om dat te eisen, op een bepaald moment is er een ganse generatie lesgevers vertrokken. Toen was het alle hens aan dek om die allemaal te vervangen en de nieuwelingen zoveel mogelijk bijscholing en begeleiding aan te bieden om de lessen op niveau te houden. Wij selecteren niet op die opleidingen maar wij stimuleren dat wel. Ik denk ook dat, mochten wij een vacature uitschrijven voor een acrobatiedocent in Oostende, er dan niet veel kandidaten zouden komen opdagen.”
Veerle: “Wij hebben eerder het omgekeerde, voor de specialisatielessen hebben we het geluk dat ESAC (Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque, red.) in de stad is. Het probleem is dat studenten daar natuurlijk roderen, dus onze docenten roderen ook. Bij ons is multicircusdocent eerder een knelpuntberoep. Veel van onze jongeren hebben meer zin om tricking en urban technieken te doen.”
Jonas: “Wij zitten qua multicircus heel goed, maar voor de specialisatielessen vinden wij niet altijd voldoende lesgevers. Op specialisatieniveau is de opleiding van de BIC of FP niet toereikend. Sommige artiesten doen dat weliswaar heel goed. Een voordeel van de specialisatielessen is dat je meer kan variëren en lesgevers kan afwisselen. Bij de jongere kinderen is het wel belangrijk dat er continuïteit is.”
Veerle: “Soms volstaat de BIC ook niet omdat er dingen geleerd worden waarin jongeren niet meer geïnteresseerd zijn. Het veld is totaal veranderd. Ik heb zelf heel lang multicircus gevolgd, maar nu hoor je bij zes- of zevenjarigen soms: ‘Ik heb al twee jaar multicircus gedaan, hup specialiseren!’”
Lieven: “De vraag is of je daar als school moet in meegaan, wij proberen nog altijd heel hard in te zetten op multicircus en kinderen ervan te overtuigen: doe er gerust iets bij, maar hou het breed.”
Jonas: “Ouders hebben veel meer verwachtingen van hun kinderen. We merken ook dat multicircus iets is dat kinderen doen tot ze 12 jaar zijn, daarna gaan ze iets helemaal anders doen. Het idee bestaat dat circus iets is dat je doet als je kind bent.”
Veerle: “We zaten met een gat van een bepaalde leeftijd en een bepaald profiel jongeren dat we niet binnen kregen. We zijn die gaan bevragen, en ons aanbod van de meer urban technieken zoals rope skipping, tricking en parcours is daaruit vertrokken. Ik vind dat op zich normaal in onze soort van organisatie. Is het belangrijk dat de ateliers ook potentiële professionele artiesten klaarstomen?
Veerle: “Bij ons zijn de middelen daarvoor niet toereikend. De mogelijkheid om artistiek of educatief door te groeien is natuurlijk inherent aan de manier waarop we allemaal werken, maar nu hebben we het financieel niet gemakkelijk en dan wil je gewoon je basiswerking verzorgen. Het is misschien niet genoeg onze prioriteit. (kijkt naar Daan) Als ik dan kijk naar ECDF: jullie doen dat al heel lang.”
Daan: “Het is vreemd, want wij hebben daar echt geen beleid toe. We willen dat jongeren zich ontwikkelen, en dat doen we door heel zware technische training te geven, met heel veel pure acrobatie. We proberen daar jongeren mentaal mee te ontwikkelen en een gevolg daarvan is dat veel jongeren in een hogeschool terechtkomen. We zijn daar wel fier op en dat is altijd wel tof maar het laatste duwtje gaan wij niet geven. Dat moeten ze zelf doen als ze dat echt willen. Het is het gevolg van ons beleid, geen doel op zich.”
Veerle: “We zijn er niet constant mee bezig, maar omdat heel veel jongeren moeite hebben om werk te vinden in de reguliere arbeidsmarkt, geef je hen wel kansen door hen de bagage mee te geven om eventueel als artiest, trainer of als animator te gaan werken.”
Matthias: “Dat is iets anders dan doorstromen naar een artistieke opleiding. Dat is jongeren helpen een aantal competenties te ontwikkelen en hen sterker maken om in de jungle van de professionele wereld hun plek te vinden. Dat is op zich een heel zinvolle doelstelling voor een circusatelier.”
Jonas: “Oké, maar als geen enkel atelier het vormen van professionele artiesten als doelstelling heeft, waar kunnen jongeren daarvoor dan terecht? Ik denk dat er in andere landen wel opleidingen bestaan die jongeren echt klaarstomen. Moeten we dan voor de Vlaamse scene altijd rekenen op die ene getalenteerde leerling die op zijn 14de plots motivatie toont en opgemerkt wordt? De ‘Ell Fuego-manier’ is wel een manier om jongeren uit te dagen om vooral technisch te trainen en dan misschien op latere leeftijd te ontdekken dat ze zich ook nog artistiek willen ontwikkelen. Dat is een goed model dat heel hard vanuit de uitdaging en de intrinsieke motivatie werkt.”
Meer en meer ateliers beginnen ook in te zetten op artistieke ondersteuning met artiesten in residentie, eigen creaties, samenwerkingen met culturele centra, een festival… Hoe zien jullie jezelf hierin evolueren?
Matthias: “Op een bepaald moment was er bij ons de tendens dat alles wat artistieker moest worden. Circuscentrum speelde daar ook een zekere rol in door bijvoorbeeld regisseurs van Kopergietery in hun bijscholingen te betrekken. We zijn daar wat van aan het terugkomen, omdat alles vooral een educatieve bedoeling heeft, zelfs bij ons festival op de Gentse Feesten.”
Daan: “Onze werking in Antwerpen heeft automatisch een soort aanzuigeffect. Het is meer dan alleen een circusatelier, door de faciliteiten, de gebouwen, het materiaal en de artiesten die met ons verbonden zijn. Je wordt een soort aantrekkingspool voor circus in de stad, gewild of niet gewild. ECDF is trouwens niet als circusatelier begonnen. Wij zijn eigenlijk een artistieke organisatie die daarna pedagogisch is beginnen werken.”
Jonas: “Artistieke ontwikkeling is geen doelstelling maar creatieve ontwikkeling is dat wel, en dan is een voorstelling maken daar een middel toe, al is ook het resultaat niet onbelangrijk. Er worden steeds vaker producties gemaakt van een hoog niveau, en dan beginnen professionele festivals die te boeken. Er komt dan wel wat druk om een nieuwe productie op te zetten, en dan mis je soms het experimenteren omdat je de lat te hoog legt.”
Veerle: “Tijdens de Circusdagen programmeren wij zelf, waarbij onze gasten met professionele artiesten afgewisseld worden. Dat is voor ons ook cultuureducatie, in die zin dat mensen het gewoon niet kennen. Ouders sturen hun kinderen soms wat blind naar ons, en we willen hen van het klassieke rodeneuzenbeeld afhelpen. We programmeren in functie van het educatief project.”

Welk deel nemen sociaal circus en socio-culturele circusprojecten in jullie werking in?
Lieven: “We willen daar meer op inzetten omdat we voelen dat we iets waardevols in handen hebben. Kleine succeservaringen en leren omgaan met tegenslagen en succes en leren samenwerken zijn zeker voordelig voor veel van de kansengroepen.”
Veerle: “Bij ons is sociaal circus de basis van onze werking. We vinden het heel belangrijk om representatief te zijn. Onze maatschappij is fel veranderd en daar maken heel veel verschillende mensen deel van uit. Dat is niet altijd zichtbaar want onze samenleving is gewoon erg gesegregeerd. Als je vanuit Brussel centrum het kanaal richting Molenbeek oversteekt dan zie je: dat is een totaal andere wijk, met een andere bevolkingssamenstelling, andere horeca,… je moet daar niet onnozel over doen. Ik denk wel dat we er ook in slagen om heel veel verschillende mensen bij ons te betrekken. We hebben lesgevers met erg verschillende profielen, mensen met een beperking en mensen met een migratieachtergrond… Het is niet eenvoudig, want hoe behoud je je technische of educatieve kwaliteit terwijl de helft van de groep bestaat uit kinderen met een beperking of gedragsmoeilijkheden? De resultaten zijn heel fijn en mensen voelen zich heel goed bij ons, maar dat staat gigantisch onder druk. Iedereen bij ons betaalt volgens inkomen en als op 1000 mensen de helft het laagste tarief betaalt, dan wordt het moeilijk. En je vecht daarbij tegen een politiek klimaat dat haaks op een inclusieve beweging staat.”
Matthias: “De grote maatschappelijke tendens is er ook nog… Trump in Amerika of Viktor Orban uit Hongarije schuiven een maatschappijbeeld naar voor dat niet aansluit bij wat wij doen.”
Veerle: “Het grootste probleem vind ik het linken van sociaal circus aan projectmiddelen. Je werkt drie jaar in een bepaalde wijk, plots is het geld op en is het voorbij. Het zijn altijd dezelfde mensen die in de kou blijven staan en het werkt zelfs contraproductief. Op de arbeidsmarkt krijgen ze altijd de deur in hun gezicht of op school zijn ze de pineut, en dat is wat we nu net proberen niet te doen.”
Daan: “Er zijn ook 1001 soorten sociaal werk… We hebben bijvoorbeeld sinds een jaar een heel groot tewerkstellingsproject lopen met steun van de Europese Unie waar we circus gebruiken om de competenties te vergroten van mensen op de arbeidsmarkt.”
Els: “Je moet daar als atelier ook keuzes in maken. Je kunt niet alle groepen aanspreken en overal expertise in ontwikkelen.”

Is er genoeg diversiteit in de circusateliers of overheersen de witte middenklasse-bakfietsers overal?
Jonas: “Ik weet niet hoe de verdeling precies bij ons is, maar het gevoel is wel: een meerderheid van blanke tweeverdieners. Ik denk niet dat daar bij ons veel evolutie in is geweest de afgelopen jaren. Sociale projecten gebeuren bij ons vaak projectmatig. We worden gevraagd om hier en daar een project te doen en dat is zeker waardevol, maar het is natuurlijk eindig.”
Lieven: “Vroeger kwamen onze leerlingen bij wijze van spreken hoofdzakelijk uit de Freinetschool, maar ik denk dat we wel wat meer mainstream geworden zijn. Het elitaire is er uit, ook al lopen we nog altijd jaren achter op de realiteit.”
Veerle: “De vraag is of het over etnische of over sociale diversiteit gaat. Ik heb er bijvoorbeeld aanstoot aan genomen dat in het boekje van 10 jaar Circusdecreet, in het hoofdstuk over de circusateliers, vrij fier stond: “De circuswereld is inclusief.” Ik denk dat dat niet klopt als je 1000 deelnemers hebt waarvan slechts vijf met een functiebeperking en een paar mensen met Marokkaanse roots. Dan ben je gewoon niet representatief, de samenleving is niet op die manier verdeeld. We moeten daar veel zorgzamer mee omgaan.”
Matthias: “Wij zijn een blanke middenklasse-organisatie, maar we hebben echt de keuze gemaakt om divers en representatief te proberen zijn, om toegankelijk te zijn en inclusief te werken.”
Veerle: “Het kan gewoon niet meer dat de richtlijn in de kunsten of het onderwijs de blanke middenklasse is, want dat is niet de realiteit. Ik heb daar een heel uitgesproken mening over maar ik zie ook wel hoe uitdagend het is voor organisaties die anders geworteld zijn om aan die maatschappelijke uitdagingen het hoofd te bieden. Zeker zonder structurele of toereikende middelen.”
Een eigen ruimte is voor veel ateliers dé grote droom, voor sommigen is die droom intussen werkelijkheid geworden. Welke kansen biedt een eigen plek, en wat komt er onvoorzien nog bij kijken?
Els: “Het is niet iets wat ik voorop zou stellen als prioriteit, zeker niet als beginnend atelier, maar op den duur was die vraag vanuit onze ganse ploeg zo hard dat je die bijna niet meer kon negeren. Dan neem je de risico’s die erbij horen, en eenmaal je een klein beetje geland bent is het echt thuiskomen.”
Matthias: “Er bestaan ook geen circusinfrastructuren. Een nieuwe sportclub kan onmiddellijk een aanvraag doen voor een bestaande sporthal, maar circus botst constant op de grenzen van die locaties. Op een bepaald moment denk je: ‘We doen het zelf wel als het moet.’ Dat geeft veel kopzorgen, maar heeft ook heel veel voordelen. Artiesten komen er trainen en je hebt je eigen plek waar je dingen kan laten gebeuren.”
Lieven: “Wij zijn in april vorig jaar in onze grotere zaal getrokken, waar ruimte is om artiesten te laten trainen. Deze week waren er bijvoorbeeld artiesten van Cirque Eloize en Collectif Malunés naast elkaar aan het werken… Da’s super!”
Daan: “Soms is het ook een zuiver economisch vraagstuk. Als je per maand een enorm bedrag aan huur betaalt, dan koop je beter iets. Wij hebben bijvoorbeeld een ruimte die we huren en die we helemaal zelf hebben kunnen inrichten, maar de hoge huurprijzen duwen ons in de richting van een aankoop.”
Jonas: “De stad Mechelen maakte een heel duidelijke keuze door een gebouw te geven aan Circolito, dat betekent dat de stad een zeker engagement aangaat. In Leuven is dat ook het geval.”
Het nieuwe Circusdecreet gaat in werking vanaf 2021. Vanaf dan is het in principe mogelijk voor elk circusatelier om structurele subsidies te ontvangen als er aan een minimum aantal deelnemersuren wordt voldaan. De kleinere ateliers dreigen dus uit de boot en uit het decreet te vallen…
Matthias: “We hebben daar voordien een overleg over gehouden en we waren tot een consensus gekomen: alle ateliers moeten erbij. Het decreet moet nu nog passeren in de parlementaire commissie, maar ik vind het wel belangrijk dat we solidair zijn met de kleine en beginnende ateliers en blijven zeggen: dat was de visie toen en dat is de visie nu.”
Daan: “Het kabinet heeft ons gevraagd om zelf met een voorstel te komen. In ons voorstel stond heel expliciet dat we een oplossing willen voor de kleinere ateliers. We hadden een stuk geschreven over de ateliers met lagere deelnemersuren en dat is er nu uit. Het is belangrijk om nog eens te herhalen dat wij vragende partij blijven om ons voorstel integraal uit te voeren.”

Lieven: “De Strategisch Adviesraad Cultuur (SARC) heeft hetzelfde geadviseerd, drie pagina’s met allemaal opmerkingen en daar is één regeltje uit overgenomen: ‘Jongleren wordt nu toch objectmanipulatie.’ Al die andere voorstellen van de SARC hebben ze niet gebruikt. Ik vraag me af hoe solidair we gaan kunnen zijn als alles uit een gemeenschappelijke pot moet komen. Degene die de beste beleidsnota schrijft gaat het meeste geld krijgen, en als het ene atelier meer krijgt, krijgt het andere minder. Ik ben er niet gerust in.”
Jullie mogen tot slot ook nog eens luidop over de toekomst dromen. Wat wil je nog graag voor je eigen atelier?
Els: “Ik droom ervan dat CircusMagazine weer van de circusateliers wordt. En misschien raar om te zeggen want we hebben net een gebouw gekocht: nog een groter gebouw!”
Lieven: “Ik was op bezoek in een Duitse circusschool en die hebben een of ander vakantiepark gekocht. Dat is een heus circusdorp geworden waar doorheen het jaar scholen en in de vakantie ateliers op kamp komen. Wij hebben een grote zaal, maar we kunnen niemand laten slapen. En dat zou wel mooi zijn, want dan kun je mensen in residentie ontvangen. Wij willen ook met scholen samenwerken die een week op bezoek komen zodat je echt gasten kunt onderdompelen, en laat de circusateliers er maar allemaal hun kampen komen doen.”
Veerle: “Met een openluchtzwembad?”
Matthias: “Een soort Circus Club Med eigenlijk…”
Jonas: “Ons circushotel dreigt te verdwijnen en ik droom ervan om het boerderijtje in ons park om te bouwen tot een nieuwe verblijfplaats voor jongeren en artiesten. Samen met de oplevering van ons nieuw gebouw.”
Matthias: “De grootste uitdaging bij Circusplaneet is diversiteit, en mijn droom is een organisatie te zijn die een antwoord biedt op uitdagingen van de samenleving in de komende vijf, tien en waarschijnlijk 100 jaar.”
Veerle: “Mijn droom is dat er een moment zou kunnen komen waarbij we ons volledig op onze inhoud kunnen focussen in plaats van zoveel energie te steken in dossiers en financiën. Ik denk dat het werk wat we doen megarelevant is en het zou fijn zijn dat al onze energie naar het effectieve werk kan gaan.”
