Dat ze niet vies zijn van een uitdaging is het minste wat je kan zeggen van de mastacrobaten van Collectif Sous le Manteau. De groep bestaat uit zeven acrobaten, drie vrouwen en vier mannen van zes verschillende nationaliteiten, opgeleid in zes verschillende circusscholen. Wat hen bindt is hun passie voor Chinese mast en de gedeelde uitdaging van een collectieve creatie rond die vaak erg individuele discipline. Voeg daar een opstelling met zeven masten en een muzikant aan toe en je krijgt een vaag idee van de omvang van hun ambitieuze project ‘Monstro’. Première op 17 januari 2019 in het Franse Cirque-théâtre d’Elbeuf.
CircusMagazine sprak met twee leden van het collectief, u vermoedelijk niet onbekend: Jesse Huygh, een klassepaard uit de Ell Circo D’ell Fuego-stal, opgeleid aan de Brusselse Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque en daarna onder meer werkzaam bij gezelschappen als Cirque Éloise (CA), No Fit State (UK) en Circa (AUS). En Benjamin Kuitenbrouwer, Monki voor de vrienden en voor alle anderen eigenlijk ook, een vrucht van wijlen jeugdcircus Elleboog (NL), die na zijn studie aan de Rotterdamse circusopleiding Codarts een solovoorstelling maakte en werkte voor TENT Circustheater Producties. Hun pad kruiste aan Codarts, waar Jesse Monki’s mastdocent was, en nu leggen ze een deel van hun parcours samen af binnen het Franse Collectif Sous le Manteau.
Hoe kwam het collectief tot stand?
Jesse Huygh: “Op de Extreme Convention van 2016 kreeg ik carte blanche van de organisatoren om een creatie op poten te zetten die gespeeld zou worden op het Atlas Festival. Ik zat al een tijdje met het idee om veel mastacrobaten samen te brengen en te zien wat daar uit zou komen en dit was de perfecte gelegenheid. Monki en Valia (Beauvieux, red.) boden zich aan om mee te denken en te organiseren en zo was de eerste stap gezet. We zijn beginnen rondbellen en kregen nog negen extra mastacrobaten in Antwerpen. Na een weekje experimenteren brachten we een stuk van dertig minuten, dat goed onthaald werd en achteraf bekeken dus de allereerste aanzet was tot de creatie van Monstro. Van die twaalf acrobaten van toen zitten er trouwens nog vijf in het huidige collectief en ook onze muzikant Simon Toutain was er toen al bij.”
Benjamin Kuitenbrouwer: “Een paar maanden daarna kregen we via Valia een gelijkaardige kans op een Frans festival, waar we het experiment overdeden met een nieuwe groep mastacrobaten en waar ook weer enkele leden van het huidige collectief uit voortkwamen.”
Op basis waarvan besloten jullie: met deze groep gaan we een voorstelling maken?
Huygh: “We hebben gekeken naar technische capaciteiten op de mast, maar ook naar de mate waarin we een drive voelden, een engagement naar de groep en het project. Je moet samen op scène staan maar evengoed een pint kunnen gaan drinken. De dagelijkse omgang neemt vaak een grotere ruimte in beslag dan het eigenlijke artistieke samenwerken. Het is belangrijk om je daarvan bewust te zijn en actief aandacht te blijven besteden aan het sociale. Je kan niet ineens zeggen: en nu denken we alleen nog aan de voorstelling. Hoe graag we dat soms ook zouden willen.” (lacht)

Kuitenbrouwer: “Van in het begin zijn we ook op zoek gegaan naar diversiteit tussen de performers. We wilden absoluut een groep samenstellen met vier mannen en vier vrouwen en daarnaast ook op vlak van stijl en mogelijkheden contrasten opzoeken. Toen we acht acrobaten hadden verzameld, organiseerden we een groepsgesprek via Skype. Voor Valia, Jesse en mij was het eindpunt nog niet bereikt, we hielden de mogelijkheid open om de groep uit te breiden tot tien of twaalf. We waren op dat moment zelfs nog in gesprek met andere potentiële kandidaten. Maar in dat eerste collectieve overleg bleek dat de groep, dat wil zeggen de meerderheid, daar anders over dacht. Er werd beslist dat we met ons achten zouden doorgaan en de groep niet verder zouden uitbreiden. Ik zie dat moment als ‘de geboorte van het collectief’. Het moment waarop het collectief besliste het collectief te zijn en wij drie niet langer een bijzondere rol vervulden als oprichters of voortrekkers. Alle leden werden gelijk door dit eerste – bovendien niet-unanieme – collectieve besluit.”
Was het altijd de bedoeling als collectief te gaan werken?
Huygh: “Het was altijd onze intentie om een groep met gelijke leden te vormen. Het experiment van het collectief vormt ook een deel van het creatieproces van Monstro. Mastacrobatie is meestal een solodiscipline dus mastacrobaten zijn gewend om alleen te werken. In groep creëren zagen we als een uitdaging waar we nieuwsgierig naar waren, maar waar we tegelijk ook vragen bij hadden: lukt ons dit? We geloven heel erg in de waarde van het collectief: op scène schept het mogelijkheden en het vraagt om een nieuwe kijk op onze circusdiscipline. Maar ook op maatschappelijk niveau zijn we ervan overtuigd dat collectief samenwerken een gezondere manier is om je te organiseren dan in je eigen hoekje te kruipen. Deze creatie is dus een poging om ons daartoe aan te zetten en die confrontatie aan te gaan.”

Waarom zochten jullie expliciet een balans in het aantal mannen en vrouwen in de groep?
Huygh: “Er zijn veel minder vrouwen die mast doen dan mannen. Wij zagen van in het begin een meerwaarde in een deels vrouwelijke cast, dus in plaats van gewoon te accepteren dat er meer mannen zijn, besloten we de vrouwen actief te gaan zoeken.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “We wilden exact evenveel vrouwen als mannen: vier en vier. De cast was eindelijk samengesteld en toen viel één van de vrouwen af. Grappig genoeg waren het de drie overblijvende vrouwen die ons ervan weerhielden op zoek te gaan naar een andere vrouwelijke acrobate. Het feit dat wij mannen er zo’n punt van maakten om het evenwicht te herstellen met een vierde vrouw, suggereerde dat de mannen plaats moesten creëren voor de vrouwen, alsof ze dat zelf niet zouden kunnen. Het werd te geforceerd. We besloten dat het de initiële intentie was die telde, en hielden het op drie vrouwen en vier mannen. Je moest eens weten hoeveel mensen er onmiddellijk van uit gaan dat Sous le Manteau een collectief van zeven mannen is. Alleen al daarom voelen we dat dit een belangrijk statement is.”

Van waar komt de naam ‘Sous le Manteau’?
Kuitenbrouwer: “Tijdens een van onze eerste residenties hielden we een brainstorm met het publiek na een toonmoment. We zetten een whiteboard op scène en zeiden: roep maar wat er in je opkomt! Een van de namen die ik toen opschreef, was ‘Sous le Manteau’. Waarschijnlijk omdat we in dat toonmoment met een mantel werkten. Ik wist toen zelf niet wat ‘Sous le Manteau’ betekende en vond het eerlijk gezegd wat pervers klinken.”
Huygh: “‘Sous le Manteau’ wordt letterlijk vertaald als ‘onder de jas’ en betekent zoiets als ‘onder de tafel’ of ‘onder de toonbank’: via de niet-officiële weg, clandestien, net een beetje langs de regels. Niet per se illegaal maar toch niet zoals het verwacht wordt. Alle initiële criteria die we hadden voor de naam werden ermee overboord gegooid: niet te Frans, onmiddellijk te begrijpen, internationaal klinkend… Maar goed, dat werd het.”
Het gezelschap is gebaseerd in Frankrijk. Een praktische of een tactische keuze?
Huygh: “Beide. Het merendeel van de artiesten volgde een opleiding in Frankrijk en bleef er daarna plakken: ze kregen er werk en het recht op de Franse ‘intermittence’ (vergelijkbaar met het Vlaamse artiestenstatuut, red.). Voor hen was het dus het meest voor de hand liggend om Frankrijk als uitvalsbasis te behouden.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Omdat een groot deel van de groep Franse connecties had, was het ook makkelijker om daar partners en steun te vinden. Frankrijk is overigens nog steeds het interessantste Europese land wat betreft financiële middelen voor circus, en qua infrastructuur en organisatie loopt het ver vooruit op andere landen.”
Huygh: “In België is er ook steeds meer mogelijk, maar je loopt toch sneller tegen een muur aan. Met maar één Belg in de compagnie ben je al snel uitgepraat.”
Zijn er ook nadelen aan een Franse compagnie zijn?
Kuitenbrouwer: “Soms is het feit dat alles zo goed geregeld is een nadeel. Je kan de dingen niet meer zo makkelijk ‘sous le manteau’ doen. Sinds we een Franse ‘association’ zijn (vergelijkbaar met de Belgische vzw of de Nederlandse Stichting, red.) kijken er heel wat mensen op je vingers. Je kan bijvoorbeeld niet meer zomaar drie dagen langer ergens repeteren, want dan ben je niet meer verzekerd.”
Huygh: “En je mag maar zes dagen op zeven trainen! Ook een verzekeringsvoorwaarde.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “In Nederland en België denken wij daar niet eens over na. Als we tijdens de creatie geblesseerd geraken, tja, jammer. Terwijl we het nu kunnen aangeven als werkongeval en beschermd zijn door een verzekering. Die strenge regelgeving is dus zeker in ons voordeel, maar het maakt ons ook minder vrij.”
Waar gaat Monstro over?
Huygh: “Eigenlijk is de voorstelling een spiegel van onze ervaringen tijdens deze collectieve creatie. Wat je ziet op scène komt voort uit de reflecties en de ervaringen van ons als groep en als individuen. Het monster waar we het over hebben kan vele vormen aannemen en op verschillende manieren geïnterpreteerd worden. Er zijn monsters in ieder van ons en er zijn monsters in elke groep en elke samenleving. We zijn erachter gekomen dat het grootste, meest krachtige monster het ego is. Dat voor de groep het individu een monster is en omgekeerd dat het collectief een monster kan zijn voor het individu. En toch zoeken wij bewust dat collectieve op. Een bewijs dat een monster ook iets positiefs kan zijn. De vraag hoe we ook dat positieve kunnen presenteren in de voorstelling is momenteel een belangrijke zoektocht.”

Kuitenbrouwer: “Een monster is iets dat jezelf overstijgt. Het is monsterlijk, groter dan jezelf en voelt daarom als een bedreiging. Je hebt er geen volledige controle over. Het is iets hyper-menselijk maar krijgt ook iets non-menselijk doordat het je overstijgt. Om een voorbeeld te geven: het ego wordt angstaanjagend op het moment dat het zich oppert als een niet meer te negeren tegengewicht tegen het collectief. Het moment dat je denkt: als ik hier nu niet mijn volledige ego tegenaan gooi dan ga ik er aan ten onder. Ik weet rationeel gezien dat dat niet klopt, maar mijn ego manifesteert zich zo krachtig dat ik die gedachten niet helemaal in de hand heb.”
Hoe vertalen jullie die inhoud naar de scène?
Kuitenbrouwer: “Het thema is ontstaan doordat we tijdens de eerste recherchemomenten regelmatig terugkwamen op het creëren van fysieke monsters bestaande uit verschillende lichamen. Door meerdere mensen boven, naast of achter elkaar te zetten ontstond er een soort bovenmenselijke wezens. Die monsters plaatsten we in een semi-surrealistisch, soms wat donker universum waar ze nog beter tot hun recht kwamen. Op dat spoor zijn we verder gegaan en we vulden het aan met andere metaforische monsters zoals dat van ‘de massa’: een massa mensen die zonder na te denken één actie steeds maar herhaalt als een soort monsterlijke weergave van een systeem, van een samenleving.”
Huygh: “De druk die je elke dag voelt om door te gaan, te blijven volgen. Dat is het monsterlijke dagelijkse dat ons opslokt en waar we geen controle over lijken te hebben.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Vaak plaatsen we het monster op scène tegenover het menselijke, dus één van ons of een deel van de groep vertegenwoordigt dan het menselijke tegengewicht. Want als je geen mens tegenover de monsters hebt, dan zijn die wezens geen monsters meer, maar gewoon…”
Huygh: “Collega’s?”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Ja, dat zijn onze mindere dagen. (lacht) Door het menselijke tegenover het monsterlijke te plaatsen vergroot je het contrast en maak je het monsterlijke nog groter.”
Huygh: “Tijdens een feedbackmoment na een try-out zei een kind uit het publiek dat een monster enkel een monster is voor wie het ziet, voor wie het waarneemt. Dat heeft ons geïnspireerd. Het klopt eigenlijk ook. Als je het niet ervaart als monsterlijk, is er geen monster.”
Jullie doen regelmatig beroep op jullie publiek voor feedback tijdens de creatie. Waarom?
Huygh: “Wat we op scène vertellen vertrekt zo sterk van onze eigen ervaringen dat het gevaar loert dat het te persoonlijk of te specifiek wordt. Door onze zoektocht te delen met het publiek trek je het weer wat meer open. Zo hebben we bijvoorbeeld aan mensen gevraagd wat hun monster is, hoe zij een monster ervaren.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Daarnaast is er ook iemand die het creatieproces van buitenaf volgt, namelijk Olivier Letellier (onder meer artistiek directeur van Le Phare, red.) die in zijn eigen werk vooral bezig is met theater en verhalen vertellen en daarvoor verschillende media combineert waaronder circus. Olivier komt meestal een viertal dagen per residentieperiode langs om de grote dramaturgische lijnen te bevragen en de dingen weer wat scherp te stellen. Maar de uiteindelijke beslissingen liggen bij het collectief.”
Hoe nemen jullie beslissingen?
Huygh: “Kort samengevat: door heel veel te babbelen.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Om dat oneindige gepraat te omzeilen geven we soms één iemand tijdelijk de regie in handen voor een bepaalde scène. De rest moet dan gewoon even zwijgen en doen wat die persoon voor ogen heeft. Zo testen we nieuwe ideeën uit zonder dat iedereen de hele tijd zijn eigen idee naar voor probeert te schuiven. Na een tijdje komt de regie weer organisch terecht bij de groep.”
Intussen is de rechte lijn naar de première ingezet. Is er iets veranderd aan de manier van werken?
Huygh: “We hebben veel materiaal en het komt er nu op aan te beslissen wat daarvan in het stuk zal komen en in welke vorm. We moeten blijven nadenken en puzzelen tot we voelen dat het klopt. Hopelijk weten we dat minstens drie weken voor de première, maar de kans bestaat dat we tot vlak voor die datum zullen blijven sukkelen met bepaalde stukken en dat de beslissing moeilijk blijft.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Je voelt de interactie tussen ons veranderen. Iedereen ziet die première aan de horizon liggen. Tot nu toe zijn we altijd heel lief en respectvol geweest voor elkaar, soms tot op een verlammend niveau. Ik voorspel dat we een conflictueuze periode tegemoet gaan, maar ik kijk daar eigenlijk ook naar uit. Het wordt hoog tijd dat we wat strenger worden. Nu moet je je voet neerzetten als je iets wel of niet in de voorstelling wil. Dit is de periode die telt en van groot belang zal zijn voor het eindproduct.”

Jullie zochten geld voor jullie decor via crowdfunding. Hoe was die ervaring?
Kuitenbrouwer: “Zo’n crowdfunding is zenuwslopend maar zeer waardevol. Je vergroot je netwerk door je niet enkel te richten tot de professionele instanties voor financiële steun. In ons geval was het een goeie manier om onze omgeving, familie en vrienden in onze thuislanden te betrekken bij het project. Je laat hen weten dat er iets te gebeuren staat en dat ze er deel van kunnen uitmaken.”
Huygh: “Het geld dat we bijeen kregen zal ervoor zorgen dat we kunnen toeren en dus tot bij die mensen zullen geraken. We bekostigden er een vloer mee die ons in staat stelt om eender waar er genoeg ruimte is onze zeven masten op te stellen. Een noodzakelijk kwaad, want er zijn maar weinig theaters die zestien ankerpunten kunnen voorzien voor Chinese masten.”
Hoe ziet de toekomst van Sous le Manteau eruit?
Kuitenbrouwer: “Om te beginnen ligt er een mooie speellijst kaar voor de komende twee jaar met Monstro, voornamelijk in en rond Frankrijk. We hopen zeker ook in elk van onze thuislanden te spelen. Maar wat na Monstro? Ik moet zeggen dat ik stilaan zin krijg in een volgende stap, wie weet een nieuwe creatie samen.”
Huygh: “Eigenlijk is het oorspronkelijke project, namelijk het collectief creëren met mastacrobaten, pas geslaagd als we na deze creatie opnieuw met elkaar in zee gaan. Dan wordt het collectief een compagnie die samen blijft voor meer dan één project.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Wat ik interessant zou vinden is om voor een volgende creatie te vertrekken van een vooraf bepaalde inhoud. Een thema dat we willen uitwerken en waarvoor we van in het begin uitgaan van bepaalde gedeelde ideeën. Bij Monstro groeide de inhoud tijdens de creatie, maar ik denk dat de omgekeerde richting tot een nog sterker product kan leiden.”
Huygh: “De goesting is er en de mensen zijn er die – ondanks alles – willen samenwerken.”
Kuitenbrouwer: “Misschien wil niet iedereen samen verder en dat is ook prima. Dat gesprek zullen we na de première aangaan. In ieder geval weten we dan iets meer waar we aan beginnen. Want voor deze creatie hadden we daar geen idee van.”
