Iedereen die ooit voor een publiek heeft gestaan, heeft er ervaring mee. Iedereen die het ooit wil proberen weze gewaarschuwd.
Plots valt er een pijnlijke stilte, het gelach en het applaus blijven uit. Een groot gevoel van eenzaamheid overvalt je en je wordt geconfronteerd met de onafwendbare realiteit: je bent net op je bek gegaan, de artistieke buiklanding is een feit.
Dit tijdelijke gezichtsverlies kan drastische gevolgen hebben. Het ingebeelde hoongelach blijft de onfortuinlijke in kwestie jarenlang achtervolgen, slapeloze nachten en onheilspellende nachtmerries zijn z’n deel en ontluikende artistieke ambities worden in de kiem gesmoord. Wie toch nog verder wil beschikt maar beter over een gezonde dosis humor en relativeringsvermogen, raapt zichzelf samen, denkt “volgende keer beter” en sluipt nadien incognito de backstage uit.
Een circusartiest heeft op de koop toe een behoorlijk grote kans minstens één keer in z’n carrière niet alleen figuurlijk, maar ook letterlijk op z’n bek gaan. Salto gemist, partner vergeten op te vangen, al eenwielerend van het podium af gedonderd, het vege lijf gered door valmat, vangnet of een bereidwillige toeschouwer. Even controleren of alles het nog doet, kostuum afkloppen en – na een schietgebedje – een tweede poging wagen. Vallen en opstaan, zoals het hoort.
Hoe ontmoedigend al het voorgaande mag klinken, in het circus geldt, net als in het leven zelf, de regel van drie. Derde keer, goeie keer. Na een paar mislukte pogingen klinkt – TROMGEROFFEL – het applaus de derde keer des te harder.
