Zelden dekte een vlag de lading beter dan bij ‘Carrying my father’: zonen die hun vaders dragen. Circusartiest Toon Van Gramberen voerde er samen met zijn vader onderzoek naar, betrok er andere duo’s bij en legde het resultaat vast op de gevoelige plaat. De volgende stap: een volwaardige voorstelling met première in 2020.
Hoe kwam je op het idee voor ‘Carrying my father’?
Toon: “Het idee ontstond vanuit mijn interesse in het ouder wordende lichaam en de plaats van virtuositeit in het circus. Wat betekent het ‘fysiek kunnen’ op verschillende leeftijden? Door met mijn vader samen te werken kwam daar het idee bij van het omkeren van de zorgrol. Zoals mijn vader mij droeg als kind, zo draag ik hem nu. Of zal ik hem later misschien moeten dragen. Dat zit echt in de beelden vervat.”
Eugeen: “Toen Toon me vroeg of ik het zag zitten om mee te doen met een workshop rond vaders en zonen, twijfelde ik niet lang. Hij vertelde me dat we zouden experimenteren met vormen van dragen en gedragen worden. Een hele mond vol en een thema vol van gevoelens en ervaringen die me zowel als vader en als zoon weer voor ogen kwamen.
Wat zal je van het hele traject het meeste bijblijven?
Toon: “Hoewel ik het als circusartiest erg gewoon ben om anderen aan te raken en fysiek samen te werken, was de ervaring met mijn vader toch bijzonder. In de basisprincipes van acro-porté zitten veel aspecten die te maken hebben met vertrouwen. Je gewicht durven geven, steun zijn voor de ander, elkaar in evenwicht houden,… Allemaal situaties die in die vader-zooncontext een nog veel persoonlijkere dimensie krijgen. Maar evengoed blijft mij bij hoe werken rond dit thema al veel mooie en persoonlijke gesprekken heeft opgeleverd met anderen over hun vader of zoon. De beelden nodigen daartoe uit. Ze stellen de vraag ‘zou jij je vader kunnen/willen dragen?’”
Eugeen: “Het samen fysiek bezig zijn werd een hele nieuwe ervaring. Je durven laten gaan, vertrouwen op elkaar, samen evenwicht zoeken, nieuwe uitdagingen aangaan en grenzen verleggen. Het werd een spel zonder woorden dat ons nog dichter bij elkaar bracht.”
Hoe ziet de toekomst eruit?
Toon: “In maart 2019 start de creatie van een voorstelling met acht volwassen mannen op scène. Vier echte vader-zoonduo’s waarvan ik en mijn vader er een zijn. Voor de cast zullen we werken met een mix van professionele en amateurperformers. Met coproducties van PERPLX, Theater op de Markt en 30CC ziet de toekomst er goed uit.”
Wie of wat overtuigde jullie om aan ‘Carrying my father’ deel te nemen?
Dirk: “We gingen in op uitnodiging van Toon & Hanna (Mampuys, red.). Beide zijn creatief en gepassioneerd bezig met circuskunst, en zoeken synergiën met andere kunstvormen zoals dans, theater en muziekbeleving. De voorstelling van hun workshops over ‘draagkracht binnen de vader-zoonrelatie’ was best uitnodigend, het maakte me nieuwsgierig.”
Thomas: “Ik vond het spannend en uitdagend om met mijn vader zo’n fysiek contact te hebben, dat hadden we nog nooit gedaan. Ik had best wel wat zenuwen wat het zou geven, maar uiteindelijk verliep alles heel gemoedelijk.”
Hoe voelt het om je vader te dragen of om door je zoon gedragen te worden?
Thomas: “Het was fijn om hem te dragen. Het gaf me een krachtig gevoel. En zijn fragiliteit in het contact ontroerde me.”
Dirk: “Al was het fysiek soms zwaar, het was een bron van ontspanning, inspanning en beleving. Ik voelde de link met de peuterjaren waarin ik mijn zoon veel gedragen heb – vooral in slaap gewiegd. Nu ik gedragen werd door mijn zoon voelde het als het omkeren van de dingen des levens. Het perspectief veranderde volledig.”
Is jullie band veranderd sinds ‘Carrying my father’?
Dirk: “We hebben er geen woorden voor nodig, maar je voelt dat het iets doet met jezelf en met je zoon.”
Thomas: “Op korte termijn merkte ik wel dat het ons had verbonden. Ik denk dat het in een langer project echt effect zou kunnen hebben.”
Waarom deed je mee aan Carrying my father?
Wout: “Het leek mij een leuke kans om samen met mijn vader een activiteit te doen, dat gebeurt niet vaak.”
Wat heb je eruit geleerd?Wout: “Het was interessant omdat ik thuis ben in de circuswereld. Ik was meer op mijn gemak wat betreft het fysieke aspect en moest dus ook de leiding
nemen om mijn vader uit zijn comfortzone te halen. Dat is zowat het omgekeerde van een normale vader-zoonrelatie.”
Hoe voelt het om je vader te dragen?
Wout: “Het voelt niet echt anders dan andere mensen dragen, behalve misschien extra bezorgdheid.”
Is jullie band veranderd sinds ‘Carrying my father’?
Wout: “Niet merkbaar, nee.”
Waarom deden jullie mee aan ‘Carrying my father’?
Jan: “Omdat Hendrik me dat vroeg, en ik dat een hele eer vond. Bijna twintig jaar geleden waren de rollen omgekeerd: toen trokken we elke zaterdagvoormiddag samen naar de lessen circomotoriek voor kleuters en ouders in Leuven en klom hij gezwind op mijn lijf om als vliegtuigje gedragen te worden. Het vooruitzicht dat ik deze keer zou mogen klimmen en zweven, weliswaar iets minder gezwind, leek me wel spannend.”
Hendrik: “Het concept triggerde sowieso iets in mij, dus ik was aan de ene kant heel benieuwd hoe een groep zonen en vaders fysiek in dialoog gaan. En aan de andere kant voor de ervaring. Vroeger droeg mijn vader me als kind, nu is het omgekeerd. Het lijkt een natuurlijk vervolg. Wie weet een nieuwe les voor de circusscholen?”
Tot welke inzichten zijn jullie gekomen?
Hendrik: “Ik heb een soort toekomstbeeld van mijn eigen lichaam ervaren, zowel positief als negatief. Ik was bijvoorbeeld verbaasd over mijn vaders mobiliteit, behalve zijn schouders dan… Het zette me aan tot het herbekijken van aspecten van het performen die ik ondertussen als evident beschouw. Niets beter dan een circusleek die te veel vragen stelt; het biedt een nieuw perspectief. Het was ook fijn om de verschillende vader-zoonrelaties te zien, hoe ieder duo met een andere dynamiek dezelfde bewegingen probeert.”
Jan: “Ik vond het interessant om de praktische fysica te ervaren die aan de grondslag ligt van dat dragen en gedragen worden: waar zet je kracht? Wat zijn je steunpunten? Hoe klim je op en daal je weer af? Hoe bied je veiligheid en vermijd je accidenten? Hoe werk je duurzaam zodat je nog een tijdje kan meegaan? Het was een intense ervaring waarbij aandacht en aanwezigheid een grote rol spelen. Ik begrijp nu ook beter waarom Hendrik als circusartiest zo bezig is met allerlei vormen van fysiek en mentaal bewustzijn; het vormt echt wel de basis van z’n stiel.”
Hoe voelt het om je vader te dragen?
Hendrik: “Van opleiding ben ik vlieger, dus het is sowieso aanpassen om enkel te dragen, maar I guess I owe him one…”
Hoe voelt het om door je volwassen zoon gedragen te worden?
Jan: “Ik ervaarde de hele workshop door een groot vertrouwen in de kunde van m’n zoon. Ik voelde me in dat opzicht dan ook figuurlijk door hem gedragen. Het is pas toen ik nadien de foto’s bekeek dat het gedragen worden op zich, in de letterlijke betekenis, me opviel: de tederheid die eruit sprak, een tikkeltje komisch ook, het spel van het leven. Ik besefte ook dat die foto’s nu gemaakt dienden te worden; twintig jaar geleden kon het niet en als het over twintig jaar al zou lukken, dan zou het samenwerken weer heel andere beelden genereren.”
