Een gloednieuwe rubriek voor de gloednieuwe erfgoedmedewerkster van het Circuscentrum: Marie Vandecaveye, een jongedame met een passie voor het verleden. Exclusief voor CircusMagazine selecteert ze uit ons documentatiecentrum enkele publicaties die haar om een of andere reden intrigeren.
In dit nummer stellen we twee boeken voor over het leven van de Nederlandse circusdirecteur Toni Boltini (alias Antonius Akkerman, 1920 – 2003). Deze man leidde een bewogen leven. Hij staat bekend als een controversieel figuur in de Nederlandse circusgeschiedenis omdat aanvankelijk niet duidelijk was aan wiens kant hij stond in volle oorlogstijd (Wereldoorlog II). Toni’s tirannieke vader was sterk Duitsgezind waardoor de kinderen Akkerman (tegen hun zin) een nazi-opvoeding genoten en onder andere lid waren van de Nederlandse Nationaalsocialistische Beweging. Later bleek echter dat Toni en zijn broers tijdens de oorlog verschillende levens hadden gered door de Duitse bezetters te slim af te zijn.
In 1966 schreef de circusdirecteur zijn eigen ervaringen neer in het boek Ik ben Toni Boltini. Hij vertelt niet zonder trots over de gevaren die hij samen met zijn broers overwon om onschuldige mensen te bevrijden uit de handen van de Duitsers. Het begon met de leden van het Hongaarse orkest Morschi Weiss die bij Toni Boltini kwamen aankloppen om hulp. De Duitsers zaten hen op de hielen door hun ‘niet-arische’ samenstelling. De circusdirecteur liet hen twee jaar lang onderduiken in zijn circus. En hij deed nog meer. Door de Duitsgezindheid van vader Akkerman maakte Circus Boltini zich bij de bezetter iets minder verdacht dan andere circussen; het kon vrij rondreizen en speelde voorstellingen, ook voor de Duitsers. Als circusartiesten die de Duitsers van amusement voorzagen, bouwden ze enige autoriteit op. Hun lef en grote mond deden de rest. De Boltini’s hebben minstens tien mensen gered door rechtstreeks naar de Siecherheitsdienst te stappen met verzinsels en gebluf.
Nog lang na de oorlog leverde dit alles stof tot gesprek, zeker toen het hele zaakje nog eens werd opgerakeld in 1984. Toni Boltini diende dat jaar immers een aanvraag in voor het ‘Verzetsherdenkingskruis’ dat door een bijzonder comité kon worden toegekend aan moedige Nederlanders die daden van verzet pleegden tegen de Duitse bezetter. Boltini meende hiervoor in aanmerking te komen. Het Kruis werd hem ook toegekend, maar werd na (valse) getuigenissen van enkele verzetstrijders weer ingetrokken. Zij konden hem zijn ‘foute’ jeugd niet vergeven. Hierop werd in Nederland een mediastorm ontketend rond de persoon van Toni Boltini. Hij zag zijn publieke reputatie ernstig geschaad. Journalist Hans Knoop raakte geïntrigeerd door de vreemde zaak en besloot een objectief onderzoek te voeren naar Boltini’s handelingen tijdens de oorlog. Het onderzoek werd gepubliceerd onder de titel De zaak Boltini ’40-‘45. Knoop concludeert daarin dat Boltini tijdens de oorlog zonder twijfel verschillende mensen het leven redde door moedig te handelen. Anderzijds heeft Boltini zichzelf veel problemen op de hals gehaald door op eigen houtje een aanvraag in te dienen voor het Verzetsherdenkingskruis; zijn volledige oorlogsverleden werd immers grondiger dan ooit uitgeplozen. Hij bleek bovendien niet zo onschuldig gezien zijn pro-Duitse jeugdjaren en het feit dat hij voor de bezetter optrad. Hij had het beter allemaal laten rusten, aldus Knoop.
