Een van de vaste bezoekers van het jaarlijkse Circusfestival van Monte Carlo is de Leuvense organisatiepsycholoog en circusliefhebber Roland Vermeylen. Geïnspireerd door de vele acts, workshops, persconferenties, lezingen en ontmoetingen kroop hij in zijn klavier en tikte een uitgebreid verslag, exclusief voor het online luik van CircusMagazine.

Elk jaar, eind januari en begin februari, is het Prinsdom Monte Carlo een circusstaat. 162 artiesten uit 17 landen en uit alle werelddelen treden in het grootse festival op. Zo krijg je een kijk hoe het circus er nu uitziet. Dat wordt duidelijk bevolkt door vooral jongeren uit de vele circusscholen. Op de 27 groepen zijn er nu 13 die een circusschool volgden. Zeven groepen zochten hun eigen weg en zeven andere groepen komen uit klassieke circusfamilies. Als je dit cijfer vergelijkt met veertig jaar terug, dan kwam toen 90% van alle deelnemers uit circusfamilies.
Boeiend is ook om te zien hoe vier groepen uit de acrogymwereld komen. Vaak zijn het jongeren die na het behalen van prijzen in de gymnastiek, zich omscholen tot circusartiesten, met hulp van dramaturgen, choreografen en regisseurs. Jongeren die de absolute top in de acrogymwereld halen, zijn dan vaak maar zestien jaar oud en willen hun passie verder beleven. De professionele circuswereld is dan een zeer goede uitweg.
Fascinerend was ook het levensverhaal van de Braziliaanse hand-op-hand Olimpos-groep die via het sociaal circus hun armoedige jeugd konden ontstijgen en dan via de Braziliaanse circusschool konden doorgroeien tot dit unieke wereldniveau.
Het festival biedt eigenlijk veel. Er is de competitie, naast de consecratie van carrières, diverse workshops, educatieve sessies rondom het leren en samenwerken met dieren, een oecumenische eredienst, ontmoetingsmomenten op allerlei niveaus van de circuswereld. Met zijn meer dan 200 geaccrediteerde journalisten en televisiezenders uit verschillende landen blijft Monte Carlo het meest prestigieuze circusmoment van het jaar.
Net voor het festival maakte Kennett Feld bekend dat het Amerikaanse Ringling, Barnum and Bailey er na 146 jaar mee ophoudt. Het feest begon dus in zware mineur.
TWEEMAAL GOUD
Kijken we eerst naar de competitie dan gaan de twee Gouden Clowns dit jaar naar Rusland. De Sky Angels komen uit Oezbekistan en brengen een krachtige en gelijkwaardige act aan de strapaten waarbij ze elkaar ook met hun mondstuk in beweging houden. Een oude circustechniek die door het beroemde schilderij van Edgar Degas over Miss La La in het Montmartre’s Cirque Fernando (1879) werd vereeuwigd. Tussendoor toch vermelden dat het circusgebouw Fernando werd opgericht door de Vlaming Ferdinand Beert.
Een stralende Kristina Vorobyeva vertelt honderduit: “We willen elke keer ons publiek verwonderen. Ik heb deze act zelf bedacht, ik geloofde er rotsvast in. We komen allebei uit de sport- en fitnesswereld. In de geschiedenis werd het mondstuk vaker gebruikt. Het is nu wat in onmin geraakt en daarom willen we er iets nieuws van maken. We volgden een jaar samen een heel specifieke training om onze rug en wervelkolom te versterken. Het moeilijke van deze act ligt immers niet in het gebruik van onze tanden of gebit om elkaar vast te houden. We hebben aan deze act vijf jaar gewerkt. Dit is onze derde mise en scène. We voelen deze muziek (Queen met ‘The show must go on’) zelf goed aan. We voelen ons dan verbonden met elkaar en elk van ons stapt dan toch telkens in ons eigen geloof in onszelf. Het roept direct elke keer onze eigen levenspassie op. Precies dit geheel komt over bij elk publiek. Daarom is circus zo bijzonder! Het publiek stimuleert ons verder te experimenteren.”
Rusten Osmanov situeert het circus in Oezbekistan: “We hebben één grote circusschool en een groot vast circusgebouw waar een grote compagnie aan het werk is. We hebben heel wat dynastieën van djiegieten-ruiters en koordlopers maar er is ook ruimte voor nieuwe circusvormen zoals ons luchtnummer. Uiteraard is er ook een sterke band met het Russisch circus. Maar we kunnen er wel vrij onze eigen focus zoeken en die ook helemaal zelf vertalen. Zo bouwden we een eigen act waar zowel geschiedenis en traditie in worden verwerkt als nieuwe ontwikkelingen en eigen experimenten.”
De tweede Gouden Clown gaat naar de Russische Trushin met hun verbluffend wipplank-gebeuren. Andre Epiklin breekt zelfs de grenzen van het haalbare door een achterwaartse drievoudige salto op één stelt, opgevangen door een speciale matras. Met een enscenering op basis van de videogame Watch Dog zie je een spetterend spektakel van deze dertien acrobaten.
Hun leider, Sergeij Trushin, is overdonderd door de hoge opkomst in de persconferentie. “Ik voel me verlegen. Ik ben meer thuis in de piste dan hier. Deze act is nu twintig jaar oud. We hebben er constant aan verder gewerkt en veel veranderd. Het is een constant work in progress. Onze hoofdspringer is nu zestien jaar bij ons. Onze basis is puur teamwork. De enscenering komt nadien. Daarom zie je in de act ook zoveel verschillende types met elk hun eigen maquillage. Elke actor is een andere persoonlijkheid en we zochten samen hoe we die eigenheid in de maquillage konden vertalen. Het respecteren van ieders persoonlijkheid en dat dan ook nog integrerend verbinden aan dit gekozen thema, was het moeilijkste moment. Ook de choreografie en de dans verbindt alles.”
De Trushin-groep slaagde direct in al zijn sprongen. De uitgeoefende krachten op de wipplank maakten deze unieke, drie- en viervoudige salto’s mogelijk. Samen met hun moed en hun talenten maken ze deze exploten realistisch haalbaar.
GROTE INBRENG VAN BOLCHOÏ
De artistieke regie van deze Trushin lag in handen van Askold Zapashny die samen met zijn broer Edgard het Bolchoï-circus in Moskou leidt. De twee broers brachten in Monte Carlo ook hun topact mee. Drie leeuwen en negen tijgers komen samen met hen in de piste. De postamenten worden aan- en weggebracht via de lucht en de dieren liggen op de pisterand. Het is een rustige act waarbij de twee broers elk hun specifieke rol hebben. Toen plots in de act een leeuw in het verzet ging en zich niet verder wou verplaatsen, zag je hoe Edgard zich snel terugtrok en uit het zicht van de leeuw verdween. Zijn broer Askold ging er rustig mee praten. Het werd een verhaal tussen hen beiden. Askold respecteerde bijzonder de afstand tussen hem en de leeuw. Eigenlijk kwamen ze beiden tot rust. Askold dwong niet en precies dit dialoog-gedrag resulteerde in een rustig, aangepast gedrag van de leeuw.
Askold Zapashny spreekt rustig in vlot Engels: “Leeuwen respecteren meestal maar één vaste man of vrouw. Ik heb de beste relatie met deze drie leeuwen. Mijn broer ligt beter bij de tijgergroep. De essentie van deze act is vertrouwen, niet dominantie. Als het spannend wordt, dan zijn onze rollen erg helder. Met deze dieren samenwerken is vooral afstanden kunnen inschatten en respecteren. We hebben dit geleerd van Walter, onze vader. We zijn hem erg dankbaar. Wij willen deze dierenacts in het circus behouden want het toont hoe mens en dier in een verstandhouding nauw met elkaar kunnen samenleven. Onze dieren leven ongeveer tweemaal zo lang bij ons als in de natuur. Onze jongste is een tijger van drie jaar, onze oudste leeuw is er zestien. Onze dieren zijn gelukkig in en buiten de piste. Het is precies dat wat Prins Rainier wilde aantonen met dit festival. Hier zien we hoe circus een grote kunstvorm is waar vele generaties al heel professioneel en met plezier samen aan bouwen. Daarom is Bolchoï hier zo sterk aanwezig.”
VIER DUO’S UIT WESTERSE CIRCUSSCHOLEN SCOREN
Wereldwijd zijn de circusscholen erg en vogue. Dit jaar kwamen uit de Westerse scholen vier duo’s. Drie studeerden af aan de Circusschool van Montréal, een Zweeds duo volgde DOCH (Universiteit van Dans en Circus) in Stockholm.
Zilver was er voor Chilly and Fly van de Canadese Alexandre Lane en Emilie Fournier. Hij studeerde af in Montréal. Zij was een Canadese kampioene in artistiek turnen, was in 2000 bij het Canadese team op de Olympische Spelen in Sydney en werkte als voltigeuse bij Soleil. Toen ze elkaar ontmoetten, droomden ze van een gezamenlijke act aan de vaste trapeze (porte aérien). Hij gespt zich vast aan zijn portiek en lanceert Emilie in de open ruimte om ze nadien haarfijn op te vangen aan handen en voeten. Ze demonstreren op het einde zelfs hun blindelings vertrouwen in elkaar. Ze kregen dan ook een staande ovatie en Zilver.
De Zweedse Sons Compagny kreeg Brons voor hun eigenwijs springen met de Koreaanse wipplank. Ze verschillen dertig kilo lichaamsgewicht en zochten hoe ze dit groot verschil in hun act als voordeel konden uitwerken. Ze bouwen zelfs vrij lange stilten in hun act. Samen vertellen ze gemakkelijk over hun creatie. Einar Kling: “We willen met deze bewuste stiltes ons publiek direct aanvoelen en zelf ook weer tot rust komen. Het publiek beseft dan ook beter de zwaarte van onze act. We oefenen al zeven jaar samen met deze wipplank. Deze creatie duurde twee maanden en we zijn nu drie jaar bezig als professional. Ik (Einar Kling, de grootste van het duo) was al jaren gymnast, maar ik had een hekel aan alle competities en zocht een uitweg voor mijn hoge nood aan beweging. Anton Graaf was als kind bezeten door skiën en vooral het ongeremd kunnen springen. Circus biedt ons een unieke ruimte om zo onze passies uit te leven en verder te ontwikkelen. Aan de universiteit hielp een dramaturg ons theatraal, onze dansleraar zette ons springen om in vloeiende symboliek en we konden op al deze basissen zelf verder bouwen. We waren zelfsturend en -beslissend. De universiteitstijd was zeer belangrijk en bracht ons in een gepaste context om zelf te creëren.”
Opvallend is hoe goed al deze performers hun verhaal kunnen brengen. Vaak ook hoe ze, al doende én al zijnde, zichzelf steeds verder hebben ontdekt en dit nu ook nog kunnen verwoorden. Het zijn ongelofelijke voorbeelden van agogische processen zonder dat ze maar één woord over deze dynamieken hebben gehoord.
Bijzonder lijkt hoe het kunnen focussen in een juiste context nieuwe deuren kan openen. Monte Carlo biedt steeds drie uitgebreide persconferenties. Dit is uniek op circusfestivals. Toch is de toegevoegde waarde erg groot. Via deze levensverhalen groeit er respect en vooral veel waardering voor de creatieprocessen. Ook de artiesten gebruiken deze open ruimte om zichzelf al verwoordend steeds verder te ontdekken. Vaak ook luisteren op deze conferenties de artiesten naar elkaar en ontdekken ze zo ook weer nieuwe verbanden en open ruimten voor verdere ontwikkeling en groei.
Toen ik in Brussel naar de restart van de circusopera van Feria Musica ging, ervoer ik hoe in de operawereld bij elke voorstelling een kort woordje met uitleg mij als toeschouwer direct meenam in de magische wereld van deze performers. Eigenlijk kan de circuswereld hier van leren hoe meer respect, waardering en inleving van het ruimere publiek op te bouwen.
IMPRESSIES UIT DE WORKSHOPS
Monte Carlo is ook een verzameling workshops en tentoonstellingen. De Wereldfederatie en Europese federatie voor Circus houden er hun vergaderingen. Zonder te veel in detail te willen gaan, wil ik toch kort enkele bovendrijvers op een rijtje zetten.
>> Het Hongaarse Europarlementslid Istvan Ujhelyi wil met een reeks maatregelen in 2018 de viering van 250 jaar circus honoreren.
>> De Rijdende School voor kermis en circus werd dit jaar, samen met een tiental andere scholen, net erkend als excellente school in Nederland. Proficiat voor dit baanbrekend werk!
>> Aan de universiteiten van Montpellier maken op dit ogenblik Chinezen hun doctoraat met onderzoek die de rijke circushistorie verbindt met vandaag en de toekomst. Ook aan de universiteit van Stockholm lopen nu doctoraten. De prof-arts-circusartiest Philippe Goudard kwam deze doctoraten toelichten.
>> Aansluitend werd ook herhaaldelijk aangetoond hoe oudere, bijna vergeten, circustechnieken van onder het stof worden gehaald en in nieuwe creaties ingebouwd. Zo werken de Franse luchtacrobaten ‘Emotion’ met een trapeze die op één punt uitloopt en zo wordt bevestigd. De trapeze kan zo sneller op en neer en is veel gemakkelijker op te bouwen en op veiligheid te controleren. Het gebruik van deze trapezevorm gaat terug tot in de prille begintijden van het circus en werd nog zelden gebruikt.
>> In Duitsland worden de pedagogische normen voor projectcircussen steeds hoger gesteld. Thomas Zimmermann was vroeger artiest en studeerde nadien pedagogie. Hij is dus zowel ervaringsdeskundige als wetenschapper. Voor het Europäisches Bildungswerk für Beruf und Gesellschaft werkt hij nu een basispakket uit om circusmensen, die uiteraard heel andere leerervaringen kennen, bij te scholen in nieuwere pedagogische methoden. De circusfamilie Sperlich getuigde hoe ze deze opleiding, via hun zoon Mathias, ervaren en hoe het hen helpt om zich klaar te maken voor de tijden die hoe dan ook veranderen. Moeder Sperlich zei gedreven: “Wij worden in Duitsland nooit geholpen. In plaats van subsidies moeten wij het zelf verdienen. In deze tijden moeten we veel verdienen om gewoon te kunnen overleven. We willen ook nog leven! Onze familie heeft tot nu toe samen de moed opgebracht. We voelen ons krachtig en leren zelf op onze manier hoe we onze talenten kunnen uitbouwen. Maar deze ervaring van binnen en terzelfdertijd van buiten uit, is uniek en bijzonder ondersteunend.”
>> Voor zijn lange carrière werd de Weense, komische magiër Otto Wessely beloond met de speciale juryprijs. Hij werkte ook in België maar staat reeds vele jaren in de Crazy Horse in Parijs.
>> Er komt eerstdaags een vragenlijst voor circussen, artiesten en medewerkers over de verwachtingen die ze hebben omtrent basisonderwijs voor hun kinderen. De opdracht komt via de Europese commissie. Het is belangrijk dat iedereen dit zo goed mogelijk invult want het zal worden gebruikt om de rechten op onderwijs voor elk kind te vrijwaren. In deze digitale tijden kan de oude gewoonte van school te lopen op internaten of telkens wisselend, per speelplaats van het circus, worden afgebouwd. De enquête komt er via ENTE, het Europees netwerk voor onderwijs aan beroepsreizigers zoals circus-, kermis- en schipperskinderen.
CIRCUS OP KEERPUNT
Vooral de Russen maakten dit jaar het circusfestival groots. Samen met de Chinezen kwamen ze met grote groepen. De circusscholen zorgden duidelijk voor frisse vernieuwingen. Ook in de dressuur zagen we opvallende vernieuwingen.
Het circus zit midden op een keerpunt. Zoals het vroeger liep, wordt steeds duidelijker niet meer haalbaar. Elk keerpunt brengt ook zijn eigen nieuwe kansen, open ruimten en mogelijkheden. Eind jaren zestig van de vorige eeuw was er ook zo’n fundamenteel keerpunt in de circuswereld. Als je dan ziet hoe de circuswereld nadien, in de jaren zeventig tot nu, veranderde en opnieuw open bloeide, dan leeft er nu hoop.
Een jongerengroep, geleid door de Nederlandse Elisa Van der Meijden (casting directeur van Stardust Circus International, de door haar ouders geleide circusorganisatie) en door de Russische trapeziste Anastasia Makeeva, wil deze open ruimte actiegericht verder aanpakken en experimenteren. Hun voorstellen wekten hier hoe dan ook veel energie op. Het worden spannende tijden!
