De pornografie van het traditionele circus
Als we aan circus denken, verschijnt als vanzelf een aaneenschakeling van spectaculaire beelden en lichamen voor ons geestesoog. Circus staat gelijk met avontuur, fysiek gevaar en het nemen van bijna bovenmenselijke risico’s. Zeker in het traditionele circus is de angst voor mislukking, pijn en dood constant aanwezig in de hoofden van zowel artiesten als toeschouwers. Meer nog, het ritme en de spanningsboog van een klassieke circusact zijn openlijk gebaseerd op het inspelen op die angst. Circusartiesten doen vaak alsof ze een figuur niet beheersen, waardoor de dramatische spanning wordt verhoogd. In die zin is het traditionele circus een plek waar dood en wedergeboorte in scène worden gezet in een revue van angst en lach, gevaar en clownerie.
Maar het circus is ook een plek van waarheid. Het fysieke gevaar is er vaak reëel. Dramaturgisch gezien bestaat de basistaal van het circus uit een opeenvolging van stabiele momenten (figuren), die leiden tot een kortstondig evenwicht dat op zijn beurt en keer op keer bewust doorbroken wordt. Gelukkig triomfeert het evenwicht meestal over de momentane chaos. Het resultaat is een esthetiek van het risico. Een welgekozen, haast chirurgisch risico dat overigens perfect beheerst wordt. We zouden zelfs kunnen stellen dat het succes van een circusartiest onlosmakelijk verbonden is met het overstijgen van zichzelf doorheen het permanente doorbreken van een staat van harmonie en evenwicht. En dit niet enkel in de piste, maar ook in het nomadische, onzekere leven er rond. In de fysieke pijn die onlosmakelijk verbonden is met de training en die het gevolg is van een lichamelijk onevenwicht. Of nog, in de marginaliteit waarin het traditionele circus tot op de dag van vandaag leeft.
Maar wat kan hier nu de bedoeling van zijn? Waarom genieten wij reeds eeuwenlang van soortgelijke, cirkelvormige vormen van spektakel waarin de strijd met de dood in scène wordt gezet? Denk maar aan de Romeinse spelen, de Spaanse corrida’s of Middeleeuwse mysteriespelen. Ook hedendaagse circusgezelschappen zoals het Australische Acrobat of het Finse gezelschap Race Horse Company zetten in op verbazing en op het steeds verder verleggen van de grenzen van het fysiek mogelijke. Alsof de beheersing van een geschifte backflip of het maken van twintig salto’s na elkaar op de trampoline de dood kortstondig zou kunnen bezweren of zelfs afwenden. Vanwaar dit quasi-rituele verlangen naar een viering van het leven, een verlangen dat ons verhindert weg te kijken van het symbolische offer aan de dood dat circus in wezen is?
In zijn boek Archeologie van de kick: over moderne ervaringshonger gaat cultuurfilosoof Lieven De Cauter op zoek naar antwoorden op soortgelijke vragen. Hij probeert te ontrafelen waarom de moderne mens aan bungeejumping doet, of waarom pornografie zo razend populair is. Zijn antwoord: wij zijn een maatschappij die collectief verslaafd is aan de kick. In een samenleving als de onze waarin het avontuur gereduceerd wordt tot en verkocht als adventure tourism, gaan steeds meer mensen op zoek naar extremere belevenissen. Gek genoeg levert De Cauters analyse van de pornografie bijzonder interessante pistes op voor het denken over traditioneel circus en de centrale plek die daarin wordt bezet door de dood. “Pornografie,” schrijft De Cauter, “opent het dubbele schandaal dat de mens is: tegelijk dier (een zoogdier) en tegelijk tegennatuurlijk (een machine van verlangens).” Het is de instant bevrediging van onze fascinatie voor het dierlijke en het lage. De tastzin die normaal gezien voor erotisch genot zorgt, wordt in de pornografie echter ingeruild voor kijklust. We vergapen ons aan een lichaam dat balanceert tussen exhibitionisme en voyeurisme en dat aan deze twee vormen van kijken haar enige betekenis ontleent. Het pornografische lichaam is bijgevolg een naamloos lichaam, waarvan “het gezicht verschijnt als lichaamsdeel, niet als spiegel van de ziel.” Net als het lichaam van de traditionele circusartiest of van een anonieme Chinese wereldkampioene turnen die wordt binnengerijfd door hedendaagse supergezelschappen als Cirque du Soleil. Circus en pornografie maken het lichaam tot object. In pornografie gebeurt dat door de confrontatie met de dierlijke behoeften van de mens. In het traditionele circus wordt het lichaam op een soortgelijke manier geobjectiveerd doordat het oog in oog komt te staan met de dood.
In beide gevallen vindt een verdichting plaats, een soort van leegte waarin fantasma en angst elkaar ontmoeten en zelfs wederzijds voeden. Dat is meteen één van de redenen waarom circus zich niet makkelijk laat inzetten als vehikel voor iets anders. In confrontatie met de dood verdwijnt immers iedere betekenis. Net als pornografie is circus “een soort van tussengebied tussen waarheid en leugen” waar de klassieke verhaalstructuur en andere geruststellende culturele houvasten worden weggevaagd.
Het kleine sterven
Maar wat dan met het circus van vandaag? Is de enigszins groteske verstrengeling van circus en dood en het daaropvolgende verbleken van elke betekenis toepasbaar op hedendaagse vormen van circus? Of beter gezegd, zorgt de verbinding tussen circus en dood er voor dat het circus nooit een afbeelding kan zijn van iets anders? Blijkbaar niet, aangezien het ‘nieuwe circus’ net staat voor het vertellen van sprakeloze, woordeloze verhalen.
Meer aan de orde vandaag de dag is de vraag of de confrontatie met de dood (oftewel het fysieke gevaar) wel echt zo’n fundamenteel en ondeelbaar element is van het circus zonder welke het circus geen circus kan of mag genoemd worden. Er wordt namelijk wel eens gezegd dat de uitvinding van de longe en het net gezorgd heeft voor de geboorte van het nieuwe circus. In een cultuur waarin het risico tot een minimum wordt gereduceerd, werd het circus ook beroofd van zijn eerste, primaire dramaturgie, die van de concrete en echte verbinding met de dood. Met de uitvinding van de longe zagen circusartiesten zich immers genoodzaakt om symbolische risico’s uit te vinden. De (angst voor de) dood moest bijgevolg op een figuratieve manier beleefd en bezworen worden. Met verhalen. En inderdaad, ook in het werk van hedendaagse gezelschappen lijkt het fysieke sterven ingeruild voor een verhalende dood. Denk hier bijvoorbeeld maar aan het werk van Rémi Luchez (Miettes, 2009) of Circ’ombelico met Da/Fort (2010), voorstellingen waarin het fysieke sterven vertaald wordt naar een hedendaagse tragiek op het niveau van de vertelling. Hier verschijnen artiesten die heldhaftig zijn net omdat ze aarzelen, net omdat ze mislukken. Ook het werk van jonge Franse gezelschappen als Cridacompany en Tide Company maakt het fysieke gevaar tot een klein, menselijk en intiem sterven. Gevaar betekent hier naaktheid en fragiliteit, waardoor het nieuwe circus vaak een ode is aan de imperfectie en menselijkheid die het traditionele circus steeds heeft trachten te verbergen.
Tegelijk echter evolueert het circus weer verder weg van de klassieke verhaallijn. Eerder genoemde gezelschappen, maar ook het werk van gevestigde Franse waarden als Johann Le Guillerm (Cirque Ici), Angéla Laurier of Jérôme Thomas vertoont vandaag steeds meer affiniteit met performance kunst. De verkapte en visuele dramaturgische structuur die zij hanteren lijkt dan weer terug te grijpen naar het traditionele circus. Zowel in performance als in het traditionele circus krijgen artistiek risico en fysiek gevaar terug een centrale plek, een tendens waarmee men lijkt terug te keren naar de wortels van het circus.
De dood van het circus?
Hoe minder avontuurlijk ons leven, hoe groter de vraag naar avontuur. Met zijn verslaafdheid aan kicks gaat de hedendaagse mens volgens De Cauter op zoek naar “het verhoogde levensgevoel wanneer men rakelings de dood passeert.” Bergbeklimmen, bungeejumping, sky diven. Maar ook circus, al gaat het hier om een voyeuristisch genot en een dood die niet de uwe is. Verbazend is dat het circus van vandaag niet langer gebaseerd is op de onderdrukking van de mogelijkheid tot mislukken. Misschien ligt de toekomst van het circus inderdaad in het ten tonele voeren van fragiele, hedendaagse helden. Helden die sterven aan andere vormen van chaos en onevenwicht, zoals fysieke, maar ook maatschappelijke kwetsbaarheid, genderverwarring of het zoeken naar een eigen plek in deze enorme, virtuele wereld.
Tegelijk is een kanttekening hier op zijn plaats. Want een te weldoordachte vermindering van het onevenwicht in creatieomstandigheden, subsidievoorwaarden, alsook te gepolijste (theatrale) vormen van dramaturgie kunnen enkel leiden tot de fabricatie van een welopgevoed en geïnstitutionaliseerd circus. Een circus dat de goegemeente pleziert doordat elke hapering, elk gevaar en elk risico worden weggepolierd in een esthetisch verpakt kant-en-klaar take away circus, heeft geen enkele bestaansreden. En natuurlijk moeten trapezisten een longe dragen. Natuurlijk is de invoering van het valnet een goede zaak. Maar ook al wordt de aanwezigheid van de dood herwerkt tot een figuratieve of verhalende dreiging, die ‘gesteldheid waarin men rond de absolute leegte cirkelt’ , zoals Tadeusz Kantor zijn Theater van de Dood (dat hij meer dan eens met het circus heeft vergeleken) beschreef, is en blijft constitutief voor het circus. Een circus ‘zoals het hoort’, een circus waarvan de levensbedreigende echtheid je niet in het gezicht slaat, is een dood circus.
