Het leven van Jetty (92) en José (83) Van Lissum spreekt tot de verbeelding en is voer voor een roman. Een deugnieterige glinstering flikkert in de ogen van beide zusters wanneer ze over hun lotgevallen bij Circus Jhony vertellen. “We hadden geen kans en geen tijd om een foefelke te doen, maar ik was dikwijls verliefd.”

“Uithoudingsvermogen,” zegt José Van Lissum, “dat was het geheim. En ja, het waren mijn eigen tanden. Als het een vals gebit was geweest dan was ik gegarandeerd als een patattenzak naar beneden gevallen.”
Het woord ‘patattenzak’ is nu precies wat je niet associeert met dit elegante, tot in de puntjes verzorgde dametje. Haar ogen zijn ook vandaag mooi opgemaakt, de lippen zachtjes aangezet. Ze trekt regelmatig haar kanten kraagje recht. Ook ten tijde van het tandenzwieren, zoals ze het zelf noemen, deed ze er alles aan om zo sierlijk mogelijk voor de dag te komen.
“Gehuld in een lange jurk, met een grote hoed op en een kanten stola kwam ik in soirée de piste in op de tonen van de muziek,” vertelt de jongste van de twee zussen verder. “In het midden van de piste maakte een van mijn broers het touw klaar. Ik plaatste het lederen mondstuk tussen mijn tanden en al tollend werd ik door mijn broers de lucht in gehesen.”
Ze doet de gracieuze bewegingen voor die ze toen ook deed voor ze, hangend aan het touw, kledingstukken begon af te werpen. Eerst werden de hoedenspelden een voor een verwijderd en liet ze de hoed naar beneden dwarrelen. Vervolgens ontdeed ze zich vinger per vinger van haar ellebooglange handschoenen. De kanten stola werd beneden door Jetty opgevangen. José maakte de drukknopen van haar jurk los en langzaam gleed die van haar schouders op de grond. Als ook haar onderrok uit was, had ze tot groot jolijt van het publiek alleen nog een kleine groenblauwe léotard aan met bleekblauwe kousen.
Een paar keer kwam ze bijna tot aan de grond, nu eens om door Jetty het publiek over geslingerd te worden en vervolgens om hoog in de lucht brute bewegingen te maken. Op een bepaald moment trok ze een extra rokje aan. In dat rokje zaten lichtjes die werkten op een klein batterijtje en terwijl ze weer opwaarts vloog, deden de broers alle andere lichten uit. Ze begon zo geweldig rond te draaien en te spinnen dat zich een lichtcirkel aftekende aan het plafond.
Als kinderen van een krachtatleet beheersten de Van Lissums verschillende krachtnummers. De broers deden ook tandenwerk, zoals auto’s voorttrekken. Naar verluidt leerde John Massis bij hen een motor tegenhouden met zijn tanden. Maar een nummer als dat van José had hij naar eigen zeggen nooit gekund. “Dat was dan ook vooral uithoudingsvermogen in plaats van een loutere krachttoer,” legt José uit.
“Force en uithoudingsvermogen, dat waren onze grootste kwaliteiten,” zeggen beide zussen. “Zachte force,” preciseert Jetty nog. “Want bij de verschillende lucht- en evenwichtsnummers (trapeze, draaiende ladder, ringen, red.) moest je je met zachte, langzame bewegingen optrekken om de ander geen verschot te bezorgen.”
De weddenschap
Beheersing en bescheidenheid werden hen met de paplepel ingegeven. Vader Van Lissum was geweldig streng en voedde zijn kroost erg beschermd op. De warmte waarmee de zussen terugkijken naar hun ouders, toont echter aan dat het ontzag en de genegenheid voor zowel vader als moeder altijd groot zijn geweest.
“We gingen niet op café, we gingen niet uit en dansen hebben we nooit gedaan.” Ze hadden veel succes als ze in de piste werkten. “Maar,” zegt José, “we hadden geen kans en geen tijd om een foefelke te doen, ook al was ik dikwijls verliefd”. Hun tante ontving de post en onderschepte de liefdesbrieven. Getrouwd zijn ze uiteindelijk nooit, maar dat ervaren ze niet als een gemis. De familie was erg hecht en ze hadden veel vriendinnen. Ze vertellen graag het verhaal van de weddenschap om te illustreren dat ze eigenlijk zelf niet van het uitgaanderstype waren. Het lag dus zeker niet alleen aan vaders strenge invloed.
Toen ze met het circus eens in Berlare stonden, werd vader Jhony op café aangesproken dat zijn meiskes niet buiten mochten voor het Bal van de burgemeester. Hij beweerde dat zijn dochters geen interesse hadden in uitgaan. Hij verwedde er 100.000 frank op dat ze niet met de jongens zouden willen meegaan. De dochters zaten verzameld in de kleedwagen kostuums te pailletteren toen het gezelschap kwam aankloppen. Hun vader stelde zijn dochters voor om met de jongens naar het bal van de burgemeester te gaan. “Maar papa, gij komt met die mensen en ge weet al jaren dat wij naar geen bals gaan.” Ontgoocheld moesten de jongens afdruipen. Triomfantelijk moet vader Jhony hen gezegd hebben dat ze hun centen konden houden en dat hij genoegen nam met zijn gelijk.
Maar ook na de dood van hun vader bleven de Van Lissums er een bescheiden en gematigd leven op nahouden, weg van alle excessen. Alle huishoudens bleven onder moeders vleugels en de familie bleef heel hecht tot op het einde. Ook nu wonen Jetty en José nog altijd samen in Aalst en dragen ze zorg voor de kinderen en kleinkinderen van hun overleden broers en zussen.

Circus Jhony werd opgericht door burgerjongen Jhony Van Lissum (1891-1957) en zijn vrouw Maria Leschan (1898-1987), een van de dochters van Circus Libot. Vanaf de vroege jaren 1920 bezaten ze hun eerste circusuitbatingen. Hij trad op als krachtatleet en zij had een voltigenummer met haar zus Diana. Ze kregen vier zonen en zes dochters die stuk voor stuk zouden aantreden in hun circus, dat na W.O.II op volle toeren begon te draaien: André (1921-2001), Rachel (1922-2008), Henriëtte (Jetty) (°1925), Madeleine (1928-1974), Theo (1930-2008), Alfonsine (1932-1987), José (°1934), René (1935-2000), Suzanne (1937-1986) en Marcel (1941-2007).
Hoewel de geschiedenis van Circus Jhony start met de sterke en strenge vaderfiguur van krachtatleet Jhony, is dit toch vooral het verhaal van een hechte familie rond de persoonlijkheid van Maria Leschan. Want toen vader Van Lissum in ’57 onverwachts stierf, verbaasde Madame Jhony vriend en vijand door de uitbating van het circus gewoon verder te zetten. In de crisisjaren (1950-60), wanneer veel circusdirecteurs de boeken moesten neerleggen omwille van de toenemende concurrentie van televisie, kermis, boerentoneel etc… bleef Circus Jhony goed overeind. Ze konden nagenoeg volledig op familie draaien en zagen zich amper genoodzaakt om externe artiesten te contracteren.
Het is pas begin jaren 1980 dat het circus wordt stopgezet. Niet alleen de invoering van de btw en sociale wetgeving voor circussen en het verhogen van het standgeld in steden en gemeenten maakt het reizen moeilijker, ook de gezondheid van moeder Jhony gaat erop achteruit. Om haar kinderen te behoeden voor ruzies en onmin over het verdere beheer van de cirk, beslist ze ermee op te houden voor alles in duigen valt.
