Gek dat Hollywood nog geen extravagante 3D-film heeft gemaakt over Lillian Leitzel (1892-1931), de sterperformer bij het Amerikaanse Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus in de jaren twintig. ‘Dainty Miss Leitzel’ was amper 1m45, had rossige, wilde krullen en was wereldberoemd voor haar halsbrekende luchtacrobatie, temperament, liefdesperikelen en diva-allures. In een tijd waarin het Amerikaanse circus moest concurreren met de groeiende populariteit van film, schitterden ook de circussterren als nooit tevoren, met de ‘Queen of the Air’ aan het hoogste firmament.
Nellie Pelikan is een begaafd circusartieste en amper 14 als ze in het Duitse Breslau bevalt van Leopoldina Alitza Pelikan. Ze liefkoost haar baby met de naam ‘Litza’, wat ‘kleine Alice’ betekent. Later verandert ‘Litza’ van ‘Lietzel’ in ‘Leitzel’. Om de kost te verdienen voor het ganse gezin blijft de mama toeren als ‘La Belle Nellie’. Ondertussen groeit Leitzel op bij haar grootouders. Ze gaat naar de beste scholen en wordt klaargestoomd om concertpianiste te worden. In haar vrije tijd oefent ze aan de zilveren ringen en de trapeze die ze van haar moeder cadeau kreeg.
‘Professor’ Edward Leamy, een befaamde trapezetrainer, bedenkt de Trapezone Rotaire. De constructie met trapeze, koord en ringen draait hoog in de lucht, aangedreven door een van de acrobates op een fiets. Bezet met tientallen gloeilampen is deze wonderlijk roterende kroonluchter het podium voor de Leamy Ladies, waaronder mama Nellie Pelikan. Als de leading Leamy Lady schittert ze over gans Europa en is jarenlang weg van huis. Leitzel is negen als haar moeder haar komt halen om samen met haar tantes Toni en Tina Europa rond te toeren. De kleine Leitzel steelt keer op keer de show. Publiek en pers zijn gek op het rijzende kindsterretje. Nellie is stikjaloers. ’s Nachts hoort Leitzel haar slaande ruzie maken met Edward Leamy.
John Ringling spot de Leamy Ladies’in de Wintergarten in Berlijn, 1907. Enkele jaren zijn ze een van de sterattracties op de opening van Barnum&Bailey in Amerika. Het is opnieuw Leitzel die het publiek in vervoering brengt. En het hart van Alfredo Codona sneller doet slaan. Als jonge vlieger bij de Siegerist-Silbon Flyers is hij slechts een opvullertje tussen de grote acts. Hij is niemand, zij een ster. Toch ontstaat er een kortstondige en hartstochtelijke affaire.
De oplopende spanning tussen La Belle Nellie en professor Leamy doet de Ladies uiteen spatten. Elk gaat zijn eigen weg. Nellie maakt met haar eigen gewaagd luchtacrobatisch stripteasenummer als ‘Zoe, the Aerial Venus’ furore in het vaudevillecircuit. Leitzel is 20 en moet het alleen zien te rooien in New York. In enkele maanden tijd werkt ze zich langs tweederangs vaudevilletheaters, smoezelige kamers en louche impresario’s op tot opnieuw een van de topartiestes. Als een scout van de Ringling Brothers circus haar vraagt voor het seizoen van 1915, antwoordt ze: “You’re late.”
Haar handelsmerk zijn de honderd ‘één-arm-planges’ die ze aan de Romaanse ringen uitvoert. Ze swingt haar lichaam steeds hoger de lucht in, zodat ze op een bepaald moment rond haar schouder draait, als een torpedo. Het publiek telt hardop mee bij elke revolte die ze maakt: 88, 89, 90, … Haar monsterscore is 249. Alle literatuur over haar act spreekt van een bovenmenselijke prestatie, gezien de dislocatie van haar schouder telkens ze een ‘plange’ uitvoert. Wetende dat ze dit meer dan 15 jaar deed, 6 dagen op 7, tweemaal per dag, lijkt dit ons erg onwaarschijnlijk. We gingen te rade bij circusartiest Jesse Huygh (B): “Als je de oefening goed uitvoert, haal je je schouder niet uit de kom en maak je eigenlijk een gewone rotatie met je arm.” Maar zelfs als we ervan uitgaan dat Leitzel wist wat ze deed, en de dislocatie slechts een promoverhaal was, dan nog blijft het een uitzonderlijke fysieke prestatie.
‘World’s most marvelous lady gymnast – Dainty Miss Leitzel’ prijkt op de levensgrote billboard affiches van 1915 tot 1930 in de meer dan 125 Amerikaanse steden en dorpen waar de Ringling Brothers jaarlijks hun tentendorp neerpoten. Met 2,5 miljoen toeschouwers per seizoen, en dit vijftien jaar lang (de vaudevillecircuits in de winter nog niet eens meegerekend), wordt ‘The Queen of the Air’ waarschijnlijk meer live gezien door de mensen in haar tijd dan gelijk welke andere figuur in Amerika. Het publiek begroet haar telkens met extatisch geklap en draagt haar op handen. Leitzel speelt haar unieke positie uit in de onderhandelingen met het management. Ze schept geld. Haar wekelijks loont bedraagt 1200 dollar, meer dan het dubbele dan gelijk welke andere circusster. Een arbeidersgezin verdient 750 dollar… per jaar.
Vreemd genoeg zorgen haar sterallures niet voor jaloezie bij het circusvolk. De meesten dachten: ‘Wat goed is voor de Queen, is ook goed voor de show,’ en dus ook voor hun portemonnee. Bovendien was Leitzel opmerkelijk genereus. Haar collega’s kwamen bij haar naar een belangrijke speech of boksmatch luisteren op de radio, toen evenveel waard als een T Ford auto. Haar tent doet ook dienst als gratis school voor de circuskinderen. Vijf ochtenden in de week geeft ‘auntie Leitzel’ les. Als ze ziet dat er iemand van de ‘circusfamilie’ er armtierig bijloopt, steekt ze hem of haar via haar meid wat geld toe.
Leitzel is berucht voor haar temperament. Er bestaan talloze verhalen over de luid oplopende ruzies met haar mannen en hoe ze soms tot meerdere keren per dag haar meid Mabel Clemmings ontslaat.
Dainty Miss Leitzel huwt driemaal. Haar eerste man, Alexis Sousloff, is een tangodanser en ladykiller. Prompt na het huwelijk beseft Leitzel dat ze voor hem niet meer dan een cashmachine is, en vraagt ze de scheiding aan. De keuze van haar tweede echtgenoot, Clyde William Ingalls, de sideshowmanager, shockeert iedereen. Uit alle mannen die aan haar voeten liggen, kiest ze een lelijke ‘nobody’. Haar derde huwelijk heeft een hoog ‘Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie’-gehalte. Alfredo Codona, ondertussen een wereldster dankzij zijn driedubbele salto aan de trapeze, kruist opnieuw haar pad. Hij verlaat zijn vrouw om met Leitzel in het huwelijksbootje te stappen. Pers en publiek smullen van hun romance.
Tijdens haar act in The Valencia, een Music Hall in Kopenhagen, begeeft plots de haak waaraan haar touw bevestigd is. Leitzel stort naar beneden. Haar schedel en ledematen zijn op diverse plaatsen gebroken. Bedwelmd onder morfine neemt ze afscheid van Codona en haar moeder. Ze sterft op 15 februari 1931.
Er is heel wat bijgeloof gemoeid met haar dood. Haar fatale act is de 13de op het programma van vrijdag de 13de. Sommigen wijzen naar de vloek van de ‘Ubangi-wilden’ als verklaring voor haar tragische ongeval. In de sideshow van 1930 stelt Ringling Brothers enkele leden van de Ubangistam tentoon. De Ubangivrouwen komen in opstand en zingen hun ‘hoodoo’ heksenliederen. In de jaren daarop gebeuren er opmerkelijk veel ongevallen bij Ringling, de meeste met dodelijke afloop. Tot in de jaren zestig duiken er verhalen van haar spookverschijning in The Valencia op. Wie haar ziet, krijgt een lang en succesvol leven.
