Op een winterse zaterdagochtend in februari stap ik door een prachtig sneeuwwit bedekt park naar het klooster van Breda. Het is een stille wandeling, haast geen enkel ander mens trotseert de kou. Ik wel, want ik heb een afspraak met Michiel Deprez (27), een jonge Belgische jongleur die twee jaar geleden afstudeerde aan de circushogeschool ACaPA en nadien in Tilburg bleef plakken.

Vriendelijk leidt hij me rond in Het Klooster, waar hij op dat moment in residentie is, door de gangen van sacrale verstilling naar een klein kamertje waar we ons installeren met thee. Ik krijg een zondags gevoel, vrij van enig tijdsbesef. De ideale achtergrond voor een reflectief gesprek. Het lijkt me mooi dat te openen met de definitie van circus die Michiel in een van de teksten op zijn website formuleert: “Circus is philosophical wonder in action, questioning and undermining the way things are. Chairs are for sitting, but we could also throw them.” Terwijl ik het citaat voorlees en struikel bij het woord philosophical kijkt Michiel glimlachend toe.
Wat mogen we ons voorstellen bij circus als filosofische verwondering?
Michiel Deprez: “De term ‘verwondering’ wordt vaak gebruikt in circus. Al snel denk je dan aan iets sprookjesachtigs, maar filosofische verwondering is iets heel anders. Het gaat om de verwondering over waarom de dingen zijn zoals ze zijn. Bij circus bekijk je de dingen vaak anders dan ze zijn. Je zoekt naar wat ze nog kunnen zijn en wat er nog mee mogelijk is. In plaats van op een stoel te gaan zitten, kan je hem ook gebruiken om op te balanceren. Je doorbreekt de routine, en dat vind ik een kracht van circus.”
In welke context heb je die definitie geschreven?
“De tekst waaruit die definitie komt, ging over structuren en notatiesystemen. Bij jongleren kan je gebruik maken van het notatiesysteem siteswap, dat vertrekt vanuit het ritme van gooien en vangen, of bodyswap, waarbij je het lichaam in vlakken verdeelt en beschrijft door welke vlakken de bal zich verplaatst. Het uitgangspunt voor mijn tekst was dat als je alles in structuren vastlegt, dat beperkend kan zijn. Jongleren is eigenlijk een daad zonder praktisch nut, en het is niet strikt bepaald wat je met je objecten moet doen. Je zou er juist zo veel mogelijk mee moeten doen. Maar wanneer je het jongleren vastlegt in structuren, dan bepaal je eigenlijk welk voorwerp waarvoor dient. Dat is beperkend.”
Nochtans werken jongleurs vaak met standaard materialen: je hebt de bal en de kegel, en er zijn bepaalde verwachtingen over wat je daarmee kan doen.
“Hoe meer je jongleren benadert vanuit het idee dat er bepaalde technieken bestaan en dat een kegel dient om dit te doen en een bal om dat te doen, hoe beperkender het is. Ik denk dat we in circus vrijer om zouden moeten gaan met de bestaande technieken. In je circusontwikkeling begin je meestal met technisch zo ver mogelijk te gaan. Je artisticiteit ontwikkelt zich hier parallel aan, in de zijlijn. Op dat model zijn de circusscholen ook gebouwd: je hebt zoveel uur per dag les om driedubbele salto’s te leren maken op de banquine, en daarnaast ben je bezig met het artistieke. Doordat iedereen die richting neemt, gaat iedereen op eenzelfde manier denken. Vaak gaat het bij circus om het toevoegen van iets. Eenmaal je die salto hebt geleerd, kent het publiek die techniek en moet je iets toevoegen om het interessant of origineel te maken. Maar er zijn ook artiesten die een stap terug zetten en zich afvragen wat ze nog meer met de banquine kunnen doen. Dat is interessanter. Je gaat terug naar de basis en probeert je creativiteit al vanaf het begin in de ontwikkeling van een voorstelling te steken.”
In CircusMagazine woedt al langer een debat over de mate waarin circusopleidingen zich concentreren op techniek. Hoe heb jij dat ervaren?
“Of de circusopleidingen te veel focussen op techniek is moeilijk te zeggen. Circusartiesten houden van techniek, ikzelf heb daar ook altijd met plezier aan gewerkt. Eigenlijk kan je techniek op twee manieren begrijpen. Enerzijds kan je techniek zien als iets dat al bestaat. Je hebt het dan over jongleren met drie ballen, met vier, met vijf en tenslotte met vijf ballen en een pirouette. Techniek is dan een structuur die al bestaat. Maar anderzijds kan je techniek ook zelf definiëren. Ik zou bijvoorbeeld kunnen zeggen dat voor mij de techniek van jongleren het werken met objecten is. In dat geval kan je niet genoeg aandacht geven aan de techniek, op voorwaarde dat er ook een mentaal proces in gang wordt gezet.”
Iedere circusbeoefenaar maakt natuurlijk zelf de keuze: iemand kan zijn voldoening halen uit het beheersen van een techniek die al bestaat, maar een circuskunstenaar wil meer.
“Bij de dansopleiding in Tilburg kan je als student kiezen tussen de specialisaties choreografie en contemporary urban. In circus maakt iedereen een vergelijkbare keuze, maar vaak onbewust. De grens tussen entertainment en kunst is vaag bij circus. Ik heb al vaker nagedacht over wat een kunstenaar is of kan zijn, en een van de beste antwoorden vind ik: iemand die zichzelf en zijn omgeving in vraag stelt. Dat is voor mij het verschil tussen een entertainer en een kunstenaar. Wat ze doen, is niet noodzakelijk verschillend, maar bij een kunstenaar komt er een ondervraging bij. Waarom doe ik dit? Wat is de waarde ervan?”
Moet een kunstenaar ook vragen oproepen bij het publiek?
“Dat kan. Voor mij is dat niet noodzakelijk. Maar het is wel beter om vragen op te roepen dan om antwoorden te geven.”
Hoe spannend is het om net afgestudeerd te zijn en aan het begin van je carrière te staan?
“Ik ben heel blij dat ik afgestudeerd ben, want ik ben nooit zo heel graag naar school gegaan. Ik ben dan ook niet in een zwart gat gevallen. Maar er verandert wel veel. Ik ben nu veel minder aan het jongleren. Soms is wat ik doe heel erg circus en soms is het heel erg performance. Op dit moment ben ik met beeldend werk bezig en werk ik aan mijn performance ‘No More Earthquakes’. Daarnaast ontwikkel ik een circusproject, waarin ik weer met ballen aan de slag ga. Ik vind het fijn om die keuzevrijheid te hebben.”
Jouw performances zijn behoorlijk meditatief. Is dat een bewuste keuze?
“Over het algemeen denk ik dat ik niets te vertellen heb. Ik wil niets maken dat ergens over gaat. Ik zoek naar iets dat bestaat in het moment, in het hier en nu. Ik denk dat circus daarvoor een goed medium is. Als circusartiest moet je altijd in het moment zijn, je moet je volle aandacht geven. Dat vind ik zo leuk aan circus. En ik vind het fijn om zelf te observeren. Dan word ik een deel van het publiek. Andersom vind ik het interessant om het publiek mee acteur te laten worden door het een opdracht te geven. Dat kadert weer in het idee om de dagelijkse routine te doorbreken. Al kan dat voor sommige mensen wel heftig zijn. Zelfs als ze alleen een lamp aan of uit moeten zetten, zie je al dat ze het eng vinden. Maar ik zal niemand op scène zetten om dan een taart in zijn gezicht gooien. Wanneer ik mensen bij mijn spel betrek, wil ik hen juist een soort vrijheid geven. Eigenlijk is iedereen in het publiek vrij. Iedereen kan op elk moment rechtstaan en iets doen. Maar niemand doet dat. Niets doen is de norm, zoals in het dagelijks leven de sleur een soort norm is.”
Het is de code van circus: hier zit het publiek, daar staat de artiest – de artiest doet iets en het publiek kijkt ernaar.
“Die code kan heel nuttig zijn, maar het is goed om je ervan bewust te zijn. En te beseffen dat je er ook van kunt afwijken. Als je alleen maar volgt, kom je nergens. Doordat ik mijn publiek vraag om mee te doen, plaats ik het in een situatie waarin het een keuze moet maken. Dat vind ik leuk. ‘No More Earthquakes’ speelt daar ook mee.”
Wat ga je precies doen?
“Ik zet iemand op scène die niet weet wat er gaat gebeuren. Niet iemand uit het publiek, maar een medekunstenaar. Die persoon heeft dan geen doel en geen norm, op een paar regels na: je mag de scène niet verlaten en je mag niet gaan liggen, want dat is te makkelijk. Verder zijn ze helemaal vrij. Zo breng ik mijn spelers in een situatie waarin ze niet weten waar ze naar toe moeten. In het dagelijks leven heeft iedereen een doel. Zelfs circusartiest zijn is een doel, of een kader van waaruit je alles interpreteert en begrijpt. Net zoals een bakker dat vanuit zijn perspectief doet. Dat perspectief geeft een richting aan je leven, en als je die richting wegneemt, voel je je verloren. Dat gevoel wil ik op scène zetten. Ik werk daarbij met mensen die het gewoon zijn om iets virtuoos te doen, en dat neem ik hen af.”
Je dwingt hen tot kwetsbaarheid. Net als John Cage – van wie de frase No More Earthquakes afkomstig is – in de compositie 4’33 gedurende vier minuten en 33 seconden een pianist op scène zette, maar hem niet liet spelen.
Deprez: (knikt)
Naast John Cage citeer je in je artikels regelmatig de filosoof Martin Heidegger. Wat heb je met hem gemeen?
“Ik vind Heidegger superinteressant. Je kunt hem ook makkelijk linken met de Oosterse filosofie. Hij vertrekt niet van een ego maar van het daar zijn, in het hier en nu. Heidegger is ervan overtuigd dat je begrip van de wereld – bijvoorbeeld je begrip van wat een stoel is – eigenlijk op niets is gebaseerd. Dat idee van ongegrondheid is heel beangstigend, maar ik vind het tegelijk geruststellend.”
Waar komt die interesse voor filosofie vandaan?
“Dat heb ik aan ACaPA te danken. In mijn derde jaar kreeg ik in een keuzevak een stukje filosofie, waarbij we het vaak hadden over Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Zeer interessant voor mensen die met beweging bezg zijn. Merleau-Ponty heeft het vaak over in flow zijn en met je omgeving in interactie gaan. Met heel concrete dingen. Merleau-Ponty en Heidegger zijn allebei fenomenologen, dus zij vertrekken van concrete fenomenen. Hun filosofie is erg interessant voor mensen die voorstellingen maken, want ook dat zijn fenomenen.”
In een van je teksten spreek je over het risico in circus, en over het gevaar dat de waarde van circus wordt afgemeten aan de grootte van het risico dat wordt genomen. Is het meditatieve aspect van je werk – het simpelweg bestaan in het hier en nu – geen mooie countering van het risico?
“Dat circus om risico draait, is een dominant idee. Dat heeft ook mij behoorlijk beïnvloed. Ik heb jaren besteed aan het proberen jongleren met zeven ballen. Die tekst heb ik geschreven naar aanleiding van een voorstelling die ik zag en waarin het om risico ging. Er werden dingen gedaan die volgens mij heel veel mogelijkheden gaven, maar het bleef bij het opzoeken van gevaar. Als je het bijvoorbeeld hebt over in een touw klimmen, dan kan je zo hoog mogelijk klimmen of zo lang mogelijk blijven vasthouden. Dat kan leuk zijn, maar er zijn nog zo veel andere mogelijkheden. Als je altijd risico als vertrekpunt neemt, dan blijf je daarin steken.”
De wil om steeds verder te gaan in het risico past bij een maatschappij die erg prestatiegericht is. Ga jij bewust in tegen die stroming? Of is verbreding zoeken eigenlijk ook een manier om steeds verder te gaan?
“Bij het circusproject dat ik aan het ontwikkelen ben, is het mijn doel om dingen weg te nemen in plaats van toe te voegen. Ik wil de andere richting uit. Het idee is om in plaats van te jongleren scènes te maken waarin ik alleen maar vang, of alleen maar gooi zonder te vangen, of alleen de baan van de ballen in de lucht gebruik. Ik weet nog niet precies hoe dat er in de praktijk zal uitzien, maar het is een poging om minder te doen. Nóg minder te doen. En toch veel te doen.”
Is dat minder doen een zoektocht naar de leegte, waarover je ook regelmatig schrijft?
(lacht mysterieus) “Ja, de leegte is een interessant gegeven. Ik heb een manifest geschreven, iets heel cryptisch, en dat gaat over de leegte. Ik word blij van het idee van leegte, van taoïsme.”
Wat is die leegte voor jou?
“Dat is wat je niet onder woorden kan brengen en wat je nooit kan begrijpen. De eerste zinnen van de Tao zijn: Tao waarover gesproken kan worden, is niet de ware Tao. Dat vind ik heel mooi.”
Zelfs in eten doe je het met steeds minder. Voor een onderzoek naar mogelijke zijnstoestanden van het lichaam heb je een tijdlang gevast. Ben je nog steeds met dat onderzoek bezig?
“Minder intensief, maar ik ben er nog steeds mee bezig. Het is iets dat mij voedt. Onlangs heb ik een koudestage gedaan. Ik ben in de kou gaan wandelen en heb ijsbaden genomen, ook weer vanuit het idee van wegnemen in plaats van toevoegen. Ik heb persoonlijk gemerkt dat wanneer je vast, je jezelf beter voelt. Je moet het niet dagenlang doen, maar als je een keer niet ontbijt en dan gaat bewegen, voelt dat een stuk beter aan. Voor mij biedt het idee van weglaten houvast. Ik merk dat het steeds vaker terugkomt in alles wat ik doe.”
Is dat iets wat je je publiek wilt meegeven, hoeveel deugd het kan doen om te minderen?
“In zekere zin wel. Ik wil niet zeggen dat minderen beter is, maar het is een mogelijke manier van leven. Er is een mooi citaat van Oscar Wilde: ‘Everything in moderation, including moderation’. Dus als je gaat minderen, is het ook goed om een keer te veel te doen. In de context van circusvoorstellingen is het ook tof om eens volledig te worden weggeblazen. Het paradoxale is dat wanneer je kijkt naar iets waar heel veel in gebeurt, dat je dan zelf niet hoeft na te denken. Je gedachten worden geabsorbeerd. Wanneer er minder gebeurt, gaan je hersenen veel meer werken.”
Laten we eindigen met een clichévraag: waar zie jij jezelf over tien jaar?
(denkt na) “Geen idee. Misschien ben ik dan tuinman.”
Oké, wat wens je jezelf toe over tien jaar?
“Meer hulp bij de dingen die ik niet kan. Heel praktische dingen. Organisatie neemt vaak veel tijd in beslag en dat is vermoeiend. Een assistent, ja, dat wens ik mezelf toe.”
