Een kwart eeuw geleden verwelkomde CNAC (Centre National des Arts du Cirque) in Chalôns-en-Champagne zijn eerste studenten in wat toen de eerste circushogeschool van Europa was. Ter gelegenheid van zijn 25ste verjaardag publiceert het centrum nu het boek Le Cirque à l’Oeuvre: Centre National des Arts du Cirque, een echte must voor wie alles te weten wil komen over de revolutie van het nieuwe circus en de rol van Europa’s meest befaamde circusschool in die geschiedenis.
De oprichting van CNAC is historisch van groot belang geweest omdat de dames en heren in Chalôns de eersten waren die het aanleren en doorgeven van circustechnieken uit zijn traditionele en mysterieuze familiecontext vol geheimen haalden. CNAC werd opgericht in 1985 onder de Franse, circusminnende minister van cultuur Jack Lang en herbergt een centrum voor permanente vorming, een informatiecentrum en natuurlijk ook de Ecole Supérieure des Arts du Cirque (ENSAC), die prestigieuze school waar het allemaal gebeurt. Ondanks de toenemende artistieke kwaliteit van andere Europese circusscholen zoals Dans öch Cirkushögskolan (DOCH) in Stockholm, de Londense Circus Space of ESAC in Brussel, is CNAC in vele opzichten nog steeds een unicum als het aankomt op professioneel onderwijs in de circuskunsten. Het doorgeven en onderwijzen van dit ‘nieuwe circus’ vertaalt zich in een filosofie die nauw aanleunt bij die van een kunstschool: hier leert men niet om artiest te zijn, maar worden de middelen aangereikt die de ‘tools’ zijn van de kunstenaar. Concreet wordt iedere student zeer individueel begeleid, zowel op technisch vlak als doorheen de opvolging van de persoonlijke projecten.
Evenwichtsoefening tussen techniek en poëzie
CNAC staat tegelijk bekend voor de hoge kwaliteit van de aangeleerde circustechnieken, hetgeen in tegenstelling tot sommige andere Europese scholen verzekerd wordt door een vast lerarenkorps. Maar steeds wordt de student eraan herinnerd dat techniek slechts het instrument, het vocabularium is waaruit hij/zij kan putten zodat “poëzie kan geboren worden.” In de woorden van Jean-François Marguerin, directeur van CNAC, is deze school “als een koorddanser, steeds op zoek naar evenwicht, maar telkens op het nippertje gerustgesteld.” Die evenwichtsoefening tussen technische veeleisendheid en artistieke creativiteit lijkt alleszins vrij succesvol, alleen al als men kijkt naar het percentage studenten dat z’n plek vindt in het professionele veld: maar liefst 85 % van de studenten is, over een periode van de voorbije 25 jaar, actief als circusartiest.
Uniek voor deze school is ook de samenwerking met internationaal gerenommeerde choreografen als Josef Nadj (Le Cri du Caméléon, 1996) en Francesca Lattuada (La Tribu Iota, 2000) of de Hongaarse regisseur Arpàd Schilling (Urban Rabbits, 2009) voor de creatie van de jaarlijkse afstudeervoorstelling. Deze voorstellingen kennen steeds een repetitieproces van zes (!) maanden, gevolgd door een professionele en prestigieuze tournee die de studenten moet voorbereiden op de realiteit van het (Franse) artistieke veld. Projecten als deze geven aan dat multidisciplinariteit hoog in het vaandel wordt gedragen in CNAC, net als het doorbreken van de klassieke codes van het circus en het hanteren van de circustechniek als vehikel voor iets anders.
Van nieuw naar hedendaags
Tegelijk tekent zich het verlangen af om de specificiteit en de wortels van het circus te koesteren. Uniek in Europa is bijvoorbeeld de verplichte module ruiterkunst in het eerste jaar. De school bezit een traditionele piste, inclusief zaagsel en paarden. Ook krijgen de leerlingen les in circusgeschiedenis, regie- en creatiemethodes die specifiek zijn voor circus en is er een atelier waar traditionele circusobjecten als de trapeze of het teeterboard een nieuw jasje krijgen en in ongewone combinaties of vormen worden gegoten. Dit jaar wordt de laatstejaarsproductie trouwens voor de eerste keer sinds de oprichting van de school toevertrouwd aan een circusartiest (Stéphane Ricordel, één van de oprichters van het legendarische luchtacrobatie-collectief Les Arts Sauts), en niet aan iemand uit de dans- of theaterwereld. In de bredere Europese tendens waarin het circus zich bewust lijkt te worden van haar specificiteit, lijkt ook CNAC op zoek naar wat er na het ‘nieuwe circus’ zal komen.
