De circusateliers in Vlaanderen doen het momenteel heel goed: bijna overal blijft het aantal beoefenaars, lessen en activiteiten stijgen. Dat is uiteraard goed nieuws. Maar het legt ook heel wat druk op de organisatie: meer begeleiders, administratie, grotere activiteiten, … meer helpende handen. Ateliers geven het graag toe, zonder de bereidwillige hulp van ouders zouden ze niet altijd zo ver kunnen springen.
Bij grotere activiteiten zoals de kampen of slot- of opendeurdagen kunnen vrijwel alle werkingen op ouders rekenen voor onthaal, bar, inschrijvingen, koken, etc. In grote ateliers zoals Salto (Tienen) of Cirkus in Beweging (Leuven) kan dat al gauw oplopen tot een groep van een 40-tal ouders. Sommige ouders doen dat al jaren en weten blindelings wat er moet gebeuren. Erg handig voor coördinatoren en medewerkers die al genoeg aan hun hoofd hebben op dat ogenblik.
Creatieve zottigheid
Ateliers zijn ook altijd blij met chauffeurs die met de jongeren (bv. van de productiegroep) her en der naartoe willen tuffen. Zelfs als de benzine terugbetaald wordt is dat nog steeds de beste manier om de vervoersonkosten in de hand te houden. En de helpende handen gaan verder: naaiateliers om kostuums te maken, handige papa’s die decorstukken in elkaar zetten, … vaak is het voor ouders een fijne manier om hun ‘verborgen’ creatieve kunstjes te tonen. Dat gaat zelfs tot mee figureren in parades en meespelen in de muzikale begeleiding (zoals de Ensorfanfare in Leuven). Voor je het weet hebben ze hun eigen troep! En wees maar zeker dat er tijdens die activiteiten ook heel wat afgelachen wordt.
Dat blijkt meteen ook een belangrijke surplus voor ouders om zich actief in te zetten: de pret en het plezier om mee te werken levert vaak een fijne vriendenkring op. En de sfeer van het circus haalt bij menigeen het ‘zot’ terug naar boven. Hier mag dat!
Inhoudelijke hulp
Je hoeft gelukkig niet altijd zelf artistieke ambities te hebben om in het circus actief te zijn. Er is dikwijls nog meer nood aan organisatorische, administratieve of boekhoudkundige bijstand. Meer en meer worden ateliers grote werkingen met personeel, aanwervingen, jaarplannen, etc. Een goede raad van bestuur met de nodige knowhow wordt dan levensnoodzakelijk. Ouders met enige ervaring of contacten in het beroepsleven of elders kunnen daar echt het verschil maken. Dat hoeft overigens niet altijd via de Raad van Beheer. Bij Circusplaneet hebben een 20-tal ouders zich verenigd in de ‘sterrenkijkers’; de werking kan op hen beroep doen voor hulp bij grote activiteiten. Maar ze worden telkens ook uitgenodigd op jaarlijkse denkdagen om mee te brainstormen over de perspectieven van de circuswerking.
Welgekomen maturiteit
Nog een effect van ouderparticipatie, op de uitwisselingsdag rond sociaal circus (11 mei, Antwerpen) meermaals vermeld: zeker als je met minder evidente jongerengroepen werkt, zoals in de kansarme stadsbuurten van Brussel (Zonder Handen) of Antwerpen-Noord (Ell Circo d’ell Fuego), is het enorm belangrijk om de ouders bij de werking te betrekken. Als dat lukt, lijkt ook het engagement van de kinderen om elke week naar de les te komen veel sterker.
“Vaak is het ook makkelijker om met ouders afspraken te maken, terwijl jongeren er al eens meer wispelturige agenda’s op na houden,” aldus Matthias Vermael van Circusplaneet. Ook hier kan de maturiteit in doortellen. Het engagement van ouders is ook zo oprecht, ze vinden erkenning alleen al in het feit dat ze (hun) kinderen en jongeren zien genieten tijdens de circusactiviteiten. En een welgemeend woordje van dank, een barbecue of gezellig feestje voor de medewerkers nadien, meer hoeft dat niet zijn om de sfeer er in te houden.
Ouderparticipatie is dus belangrijk, maar je moet er als vereniging zelf ook actieve impulsen toe geven. En zoals Rika Taeymans het stelt: “Bij organisatorische hulp moet je dingen dúrven uit handen geven. Bovendien moet je voor de ouders heel het jaar lang aanspreekbaar zijn, niet alleen als jij hen nodig hebt.”
