Voor het allereerst in zijn 25 jaar bestaan treden er bij het Zwitserse Circus Monti Vlaamse artiesten op. Vorig jaar afgestudeerd aan de Brusselse circushogeschool ESAC, vormen Joren De Cooman, Jasper D’Hondt en Lennert Vandenbroeck samen met de Franstaligen Romain Hugo en Benoît Vivien de primeur van Belgen bij Monti. Nu hun seizoen halfweg is, waren we benieuwd naar hun ervaringen.
In Zwitserland is Knie de ultieme circusnorm. Het is, na Nestlé, het meest gewaardeerde ‘merk’ van het land. In de schaduw van Knie is Monti een bijzonder buitenbeentje. Vader Guido Muntwyler was als leerkracht gepassioneerd door circus. Hij verliet het onderwijs en trok met het hele gezin het circus in. Ze werkten enkele jaren bij het Olympia-circus en begonnen in 1984 hun eigen Monti. Sinds 1992 wordt elke jaarproductie begeleid door een team regisseurs, choreografen en componisten.
Joren De Cooman: “Het is voor ons nog vaak een cultuurshock. We wisten niet dat het bestond, zo’n sterke organisatie die zo snel en effectief functioneert. Toen we bij Monti in hun winterkwartier in het Zwitserse Wohlen toekwamen, verschoten we hoe groot dit was. Een grote groep medewerkers, een indrukwekkend wagenpark dat er nieuw uitziet, een technische uitrusting om u tegen te zeggen. Wij hadden ons ‘Vlaams’ beeld van circus. We keken naar circus als iets dat gemarginaliseerd is geraakt. En plots worden we hier geconfronteerd met circus dat hoog aanzien heeft en heel sterk is uitgebouwd. We blijven er met open ogen naar kijken.
“We hebben twee maanden voor de tournee met de Zwitserse regisseurs Corinna Vitale en Oliviero Giovannoni deze productie voorbereid. De familie Muntwyler heeft alle vertrouwen in hen en in het hele creatieve team. Ze weten dat deze formule prima werkt en dat hun publiek heel enthousiast is. Maar we voelen het niet als ‘onze’ show aan. Wij zijn hier acteurs die worden ingehuurd. Na twee maanden creatie wordt er niet veel meer veranderd. De regisseur toert zelf niet mee en op tournee wordt er keihard gewerkt om de tournee rond te krijgen. Het is vaak op- en afbouw, het is veel verhuizen van plek naar plek. Ondertussen worden ook nog tenten op andere plaatsen gebouwd.”
Lennert Vandenbroeck: “Het blijft voor mij steeds wennen. Het publiek krijgt hier de absolute voorrang. Ook al voel ik me nog niet écht klaar, toch zullen we exact op de Zwitserse minuut beginnen. Met deze Zwitserse normen kan ik me moeilijk verzoenen. Op de circusschool was dit helemaal niet zo. Hoe we daar werkten, is voor mij helemaal anders.”
De hoogstaande Zwitserse normen en het harde ritme lijken jullie toch te frustreren en te ontgoochelen. De Brusselse ESAC-hogeschool bereidt jullie blijkbaar eerder op een andere wereld voor. Hoe zullen jullie dit nog een half seizoen volhouden?
De Cooman: “Maar als eerste ervaring is dit een leuk bedrijf. We hebben nog nooit een show zo vaak gespeeld als hier. Tot nu toe speelden we hooguit tien maal dezelfde show. Maar hier draaien we een heel seizoen hetzelfde. Het is natuurlijk leuk dat we onze eigen acrobatie hier kunnen tonen. Maar na zo’n honderd keer wordt het wel routine en de adrenaline gaat weg. Bij een volle tent en als de ambiance goed zit, dan voelen we wel ons bloed nog stromen. Het is goed dat we onmiddellijk na de circusschool hier kunnen beginnen. We hebben nog de kadans en het ritme van de school. Ons lichaam is nog gewoon aan het dagelijks oefenen. Ook de groep is hier erg leuk. Heel internationaal en we komen bijna allemaal net uit circusscholen.”
Wat is dan je droom?
De Cooman: “Ik wil uiteindelijk mijn eigen show met vrienden maken waar we alles zelf te zeggen hebben. Ik wil ook meer afwisseling. In een project kunnen stappen, er dan weer uit kunnen en een ander traject opstarten en na verloop van tijd weer het eerste oppakken: dat is mijn avontuur waar ik van droom. Anderzijds een eigen circus als dit kunnen uitbouwen dat leeft van de ticketverkoop en alles zelf definieert, geeft mij ook een waw-gevoel. Nu leven we vooral dankzij subsidies of door festivals die puur op subsidies leven.”
