Sinds januari 2021 is het Vlaamse circuslandschap een actor rijker: de circuswerkplaats. Een plek voor circusartiesten en -gezelschappen om zich artistiek te ontwikkelen, te verdiepen en te heroriënteren, zonder verplicht toe te werken naar een speelklare voorstelling. Circusmagazine belicht graag wat er zich achter de schermen afspeelt.

“Je treft me op een boeiend moment voor je rubriek: ik heb net al mijn residenties geannuleerd. Dus laat maar komen, dat interview. Ik heb best wel tijd.”
Dieter Missiaen antwoordt vriendelijk op mijn mail, maar mijn plan om hem tijdens zijn residentie bij Miramiro te interviewen, valt duidelijk in het water. Ons aangepaste plan om elkaar te treffen in een cafeetje bij het station valt eveneens in het water wegens quarantaine voor de interviewer. Dan maar old school via Zoom. ’t Is eens iets anders.

“De laatste weken waren erg confronterend en daarom ook erg interessant. Maar laat ik beginnen bij het begin. Twee jaar geleden ben ik gestart met een vooronderzoek rond contact met het publiek. Ik was vooral geïnspireerd door een performance van Marina Abramovic, The Artist is Present, waarbij ze minutenlang in de ogen van een toeschouwer kijkt. Ik heb hier zelf ook mee geëxperimenteerd, onder andere in bibliotheken, en merkte al snel dat dit enorm sterke momenten waren.”
Maar toen kwam corona, met de eerste lockdown. Niet ideaal voor een creatie waarbij contact met het publiek essentieel is. “Ik bleef verder werken, zonder publiek, maar met mijn toenmalige coach Ief Gilis. De grenzen tussen coach en maker vervaagden en zo creëerden we samen de installatievoorstelling NIETS, een echte coronaperformance waar publiek, artiest en tijd elkaar ontmoeten, ieder in zijn eigen kot en toch dichtbij.”
In tussentijd bleef Dieter verder werken aan zijn solovoorstelling; hij had enkele residenties waarin hij ideeën uittestte en feedback vroeg aan mensen als Sander De Cuyper, Craig Weston en zijn vrouw Els Degryse. “Geleidelijk aan vond ik interessant materiaal voor een eventuele clownerievoorstelling, maar nooit had ik echt het gevoel: ja, dit is het. Ik was ook erg op zoek naar de vorm waarin ik de performance zou brengen.” Hij werd meer en meer aangetrokken door de publieke ruimte. “Op een gegeven moment dacht ik: ik neem een bank van mijn tribune en trek ermee de stad in.” Niet veel later wandelde hij door Oostende en sprak mensen aan met de boodschap: ‘ik heb tijd voor u, ga zitten, ik luister.’ “Ongelooflijk hoe graag mensen hun verhaal vertellen, zolang er maar iemand is die luistert. Zeker in deze tijden van individualisme en digitaal contact. Zo is – erg spontaan – Bankcontact ontstaan.”
Dieter trok het afgelopen jaar in verschillende steden met zijn bank rond, onder andere in opdracht van Uitwijken in Brugge. Telkens was hij verwonderd door de kracht van het simpele concept. En hij niet alleen. De mensen van ‘Te Gek!?’ – het Steunpunt Geestelijke Gezondheid – kwamen het project ter ore. “Onder hun vleugels is Bankcontact dit najaar uitgegroeid tot Bankcontact Invasie: tien mensen, elk met een bank, lopen door de stad en nodigen voorbijgangers uit om hun verhaal te vertellen. Op het einde komen we allemaal samen en bouwen we de banken om tot één lange tafel in de publieke ruimte. Heel eenvoudig, maar heel mooi.”

Maar Dieter zat nog steeds met het plan om een ‘echte’ clownerievoorstelling te maken. Met banken, met publieksinteractie, in de publieke ruimte. Het was een zoektocht die hem blokkeerde. “Al tijdens mijn vooronderzoek had ik verschillende residentieplekken aangeschreven, die hadden allemaal toegezegd, en die stonden dit najaar en volgend voorjaar op de planning. Maar op de derde dag van mijn eerste echte residentie, in oktober in Ath, ben ik volledig gecrasht. Ik heb eerst twee dagen met een coach gewerkt en van alles geprobeerd, maar toen ik op de derde dag alleen kwam te staan, zag ik het niet meer zitten. Ik was het zo kotsbeu om te zoeken. Ik zat daar in dat zaaltje, elke minuut voelde als een eeuwigheid. Ik heb gehuild als een kind. Het was me allemaal even te veel: na de coronaleegte had ik een heel drukke periode gehad en had ik eigenlijk nood aan rust. Dit in combinatie met het te vaak alleen ploeteren in een repetitieruimte gaf de doorslag. Compleet in zak en as heb ik de residentie afgebroken en ben ik naar huis gegaan.”
Pas na verschillende gesprekken en slapeloze nachten begon het hem te dagen dat het cirkeltje misschien gewoon rond was. Dat het vooronderzoek en alle eerdere residenties hadden geleid tot twee mooie projecten, NIETS en Bankcontact Invasie, en dat die clownerievoorstelling er misschien helemaal niet van moest komen. “Maar al die belangrijke residenties stonden nog gepland, dus ben ik in november toch naar Miramiro getrokken. Maar vanaf ik de deur van de creatiezaal opendeed, wist en voelde ik: nee, hier zal het niet gebeuren.” En, opnieuw na enkele gesprekken, kwam het definitieve besef: “Het is er al. Ik moet niet verder zoeken. Ik heb geen extra residenties nodig. Ik moet af en toe met mensen praten – niet in een blackbox, maar buiten – en ik moet het gewoon doen: ideeën in de stad uitvoeren en de performance vanzelf laten groeien. Met hangende pootjes heb ik alle residenties geannuleerd, de reacties waren gelukkig heel begripvol.”
“Na maanden zoeken, proberen en sleutelen heb ik beseft dat ik de clownerie gewoon mag lossen – toch wat dit project betreft.” Het botste met de richting die hij spontaan opging: mensen verbinden, aanwezig zijn in de publieke ruimte, het leven vieren – maar dan niet als clown of met een afgewerkte voorstelling die ‘getoond’ wordt aan een publiek. “Nu heb ik eindelijk weer ruimte. De druk van de residenties was te groot. Weet je, soms moet je een deur sluiten om andere deuren te kunnen openen. Bankcontact Invasie mag rustig verder groeien, er zijn al enkele fijne aanvragen. En de boekingen voor mijn andere voorstellingen lopen ook erg goed. De vrijgekomen tijd besteed ik aan zang, piano, mediteren en sport. Daar zou ik al mijn dagen mee kunnen vullen.”
