Elke circusartiest, van gevestigde waarde tot aanstormend talent, wordt vroeg of laat geconfronteerd met een aantal spontane opmerkingen over zijn beroep of hobby. Meestal gaat het om goedbedoelde uitspraken, gevoed door onwetendheid. Aan u dus, beste lezer, de opvoedende taak om desbetreffende circusleek van antwoord te dienen. Enkele voorbeelden.
“Circus? Met van die olifanten en zo?”
Op deze vraag geeft u best een bondige maar volledige uiteenzetting over het verschil tussen het klassieke circus en circustheater, over het circuscentrum en de ontelbare circusateliers. Smeer hen in één adem een abonnement op CircusMagazine aan.
“Je werkt in het circus? Doe eens een truukje!”
Enkel een volmondige “Neen!” is hier op z’n plaats. In om het even welke andere context wordt deze opmerking nog debieler. Je vraagt een operazanger ook niet om even snel een aria op te hoesten of een boer om even je bloembak om te ploegen. Gelukkig zijn de meeste circusartiesten vredelievend van aard, want de makers van dit soort opmerkingen verdient het eigenlijk om ondersteboven aan een trapeze gehangen met jongleerkegels bestookt te worden.
“Circusartiest? Nee, even ernstig: wat is je écht beroep?”
Deze vraag bied een waaier aan mogelijkheden. Dit is uw kans om u eens goed te laten gaan, om improvisatorisch van wal te steken en u in een waas van mysterie te hullen. “Mijn echt beroep is hangmattentester,” “Ik ben geheim agent, maar hou het stil!” En als u echt plezier wil beleven: “Ik test experimentele geneesmiddelen,” daarna hoest u een paar keer en valt u voor dood neer.
