Dramaturgie: de gewone sterveling heeft het woord wel al horen vallen, maar kan er zich meestal niet veel bij voorstellen. Theatermakers zijn er dan weer dag in dag uit mee bezig. Maar wat is dramaturgie eigenlijk? En hoe zit het met dramaturgie in het circus? Bauke Lievens, dramaturge bij het Belgische circusgezelschap Théâtre d’un Jour, geeft tekst en uitleg.
Wat is dramaturgie?
Dramaturgie is hot. Dramaturgie is hip, en zeker als discours in het hedendaagse circus. Maar aan de oorsprong is het een theaterterm die in haar klassieke betekenis duidt op het werken met de tekst (lectuur, vertaling, bewerking, selectie). Praten over dramaturgie in het circus is dus wel een beetje vreemd. In het klassieke theater gaan dramaturgie en tekst hand in hand als middelen om de illusie van eenheid (en dus van ‘waarachtigheid’) van een voorstelling te garanderen. Het hedendaagse theater dan, zoekt niet langer naar de communicatie van een illusie maar tracht een ervaring van aanwezigheid en echtheid te creëren op scène. Op verschillende manieren wordt de realiteit geïntroduceerd in het theater: het benadrukken van het feit dat dit ‘slechts’ theater is, de directe en vaak zintuiglijke communicatie met de toeschouwer, de dubbelheid van de acteurs op scène die tegelijk een ‘echt’ lichaam en ‘verzonnen’ personage zijn (bv. naakte lichamen of afstandelijk acteerwerk), het gebruik van lichaamsvloeistoffen als bloed en urine, enzovoort. In dit soort theater is de tekst niet langer de centrale betekenisdrager, maar slechts één van de vele tekens naast kostuums, licht, muziek, lichamelijkheid, beeld en decor. We zouden kunnen zeggen dat het hedendaagse theater eerder visueel is dan tekstgericht. En uiteraard is ook de dramaturgie mee veranderd met het theater.
Van zolderkamer naar actieve betrokkene
Als dramaturgie in de klassieke interpretatie van het woord het werken met de tekst is, dan heeft het vandaag een veel ruimere betekenis gekregen. Zoals Marianne Van Kerkhoven (sinds jaar en dag dramaturge van het Kaaitheater in Brussel) zegt, vindt dramaturgie vandaag plaats op verschillende niveaus. Allereerst is er een grote dramaturgie, die de spanningen blootlegt tussen het werk van een kunstenaar en de hedendaagse wereld en ook de relaties en breuken tussen verschillende voorstellingen van eenzelfde theatermaker. Er is een kleine dramaturgie ofwel de ‘ademende structuur’ van een voorstelling, datgene wat de voorstelling samenhoudt en doet evolueren. En dan is er nog het dramaturgische materiaal. Dit materiaal bestond voorheen uit een tekst of een verzameling van teksten, maar vandaag kan dat materiaal om het even wat zijn: een stukje muziek, een tekst, een foto, een referentie naar de beeldende kunsten, een film, een historisch feit of een actuele gebeurtenis, een specifieke ervaring van één van de acteurs, enzovoort. En dan is er nog de dramaturg, die allang niet meer op een zolderkamertje zit, gebogen over een laboureuze vertaling van Goethes Faust, maar die actief betrokken is bij het creatieproces. Hij/zij tracht een klankbord te zijn voor de regisseur, tracht coherentie te zien in het creatieproces, in de voorstelling zelf en in het ensemble van het werk van een bepaalde theatermaker. De dramaturg is ook de persoon die dit alles communiceert naar de buitenwereld toe in teksten die reflecteren op het artistieke proces.
Dramaturgie in het circus
Tot zover enkele beschrijvingen van de theaterdramaturgie. Maar dan hebben we het nog niet over circus gehad. Aangezien dramaturgie traditioneel gecentreerd werd rond de tekst is het nogal paradoxaal om over dramaturgie in het circus, koninkrijk van het lichaam, te spreken. Zoals de Vlaamse circuscriticus Tuur Devens aangeeft, is in het traditionele circus de enige dramaturgische eenheid die we kunnen bespeuren een eenheid in stijl. Met wat in Frankrijk ‘Nouveau Cirque’ wordt genoemd, bijvoorbeeld in het werk van Cirque Baroque, wordt er echter een klassieke dramaturgie ingevoerd in het circus. Hiermee bedoelen we dat de circustechnieken worden gebruikt om een verhaal te vertellen met een duidelijk begin- en een duidelijk eindpunt (bijvoorbeeld in de voorstelling ‘Ningen’ uit 1995, gebaseerd op het levensverhaal van de Japanse schrijver Yukio Mishima). In het hedendaagse circus dan (voor zover we dit onderscheid kunnen maken) wordt er gezocht naar een dramaturgie die de visuele fragmenten bij elkaar houdt. Een voorstelling evolueert dan niet zozeer doorheen een verhaal, maar doorheen een opeenvolging van beelden, sferen, fragmenten van een verhaal, visuele landschappen, scènes en tableaus. Ook wordt vaak één bepaalde techniek als uitgangspunt en onderzoeksmateriaal genomen, zoals in het werk van de Franse Cie Vent d’Autan, het Engelse Ockham’s Razor of het eveneens Franse duo Cie IetO. De verbeelding en de wetten van het circus liggen ook aan de basis van het werk van Johann Le Guillerm.
Circustechnieken niet langer doel op zich
In mijn ervaring vertaalt dramaturgie in het circus zich in de eerste plaats in het zoeken naar hoe de atleet een plek kan geven aan de acteur. Steeds zegt de atleet dat het lichaam helemaal moet bewoond zijn door de techniek alvorens dat lichaam de drager kan worden van een betekenis. De uitdaging van de dramaturgie is dan om een universum, een taal, een manier van werken te benoemen/selecteren die ervoor zorgt dat theater en circus, ‘representatie’ en ‘sport’, geen twee aparte werelden zijn in de piste. En hiermee verandert ook de esthetiek van het circus, want van zodra de demonstratie van het technisch kunnen niet langer de hoofdboodschap is van een voorstelling, wordt het geheel vaak antispectaculair. Spektakel en gevaar annuleren immers alle andere communicatie van betekenis, net omdat een atleet op het hoogtepunt van zijn prestatie niet kan acteren. Daar waar de dramaturgie van het traditionele circus volledig gebaseerd is op een fysieke confrontatie met de dood (en dus op een esthetiek van gevaar en spektakel), zoekt het hedendaagse circus naar de communicatie van een andere betekenis. Stilaan begint het idee van dramaturgie ingang te vinden in het werk van verschillende circuscompagnies zoals bij het Belgische gezelschap Théâtre d’un Jour (zie p. 10 en 11, red.). Met de voorstelling ‘Het Kind dat…’ zoekt dit gezelschap naar niet-narratief dramaturgisch materiaal dat betekenis kan geven aan de lichamen van de acrobaten. In ‘Het Kind dat…’ was dat het beeldende universum en het levensverhaal van de Franse kunstenaar Jephan de Villiers. In deze manier van werken is de circustechniek niet langer een doel op zich maar een taal naast de andere beeldende vocabulaires van licht, maskers, poppenspel, de tent en de nabijheid van toeschouwer en artiesten.
Tussen ‘zijn’ en ‘betekenen’
Ook in de voorstelling ‘Appris par corps’ van het Franse duo Un Loup pour l’homme (zie p. 8, red.) wordt gezocht naar een terrein waar de circuslichamen tegelijk kunnen ‘zijn’ en ‘betekenen’. Hier wordt de specifieke techniek van de main-à-main onderzocht doorheen het bewust uitschrijven van spelregels die de techniek op verschillende manieren ‘onmogelijk’ maken (bv. een geblinddoekte voltigeur). Wat verschijnt is een voorstelling waarin de circustechniek een autonome lichamelijke taal wordt. Een verhaal zonder woorden dat geen vertaling behoeft maar waarin de lichamen een tactiel alfabet zijn. Geen wonder ook dat de acrobaten van deze compagnie spreken over een dramaturgie die de betekenis doet ‘verschijnen’.
Met de introductie van de dramaturgie in het hedendaagse circus wordt echter ook een nieuwe discussie geopend, want spreken we hier nog wel over circus? Maar misschien is deze discussie minder interessant dan wat aan de basis ligt van het creatieve proces: het zoeken naar hedendaagse vormen van schrijven en spelen. Een zoektocht naar een beeldende vorm en een medium die de actuele mens aanspreken als denkend én voelend wezen. In dit licht hebben de taal en de ervaring van het circus ons absoluut heel wat te bieden en ligt er een koninkrijk aan mogelijkheden voor ons!
