Januari is dé maand van de circusfestivals: Monte Carlo (het oudste en nog steeds het meest prestigieuze), Massy (vooral dierenacts), Budapest (link met Oost-Europa) en Parijs (de nieuwe jongeren) volgen elkaar op. De Vlaming James Puydebois uit Geraardsbergen is heel sterk verbonden met één van de twee Gouden Clowns die dit jaar in Monte Carlo werden uitgereikt.
James Puydebois werkte maanden mee met de Brit Martin Lacey om een nieuwe leeuwenact op te bouwen. James zelf groeide op in de zoo van Geraardsbergen die werd uitgebaat door zijn moeder en zijn stiefvader J.F. Peeters. De naam Peeters was toen een gerenommeerde en betrouwbare naam in de circuswereld. De Peeters hadden ook kort na de tweede oorlog een reizende ‘menagerie’. Als tiener werkte James al met leeuwinnen en zo maakte hij in de jaren zestig ook een leeuwinnenact klaar voor het Wiener Circus. De Italiaan Riccardo Cannone heeft vele jaren lang verder met deze groep dieren bij Wiener gewerkt.
Colonel Joe
James trok de wijde wereld in en werkte vele jaren in Zuid-Amerika. In de Verenigde Staten belandde hij dan in Circus Vargas die toen een grote mannetjesolifant had die Colonel Joe heet. Toen het dier volwassen werd, durfde niemand het nog aan om met Colonel Joe samen te werken. James zag het als een nieuwe uitdaging en bouwde een sterke relatie met het dier uit. James ging niet in een klassieke gezagsstrijd met Joe en zocht naar nieuwe alternatieven van samenwerken. Zo gebruikte hij quasi nooit zijn zweep of trekhaak zoals de Indiërs in hun thuisland al eeuwen gebruiken om olifanten te leiden. Na enkele jaren optreden in Amerika, kwam James met Joe terug naar Europa. Hij toerde ook in ons land met Circus Rose-Marie Malter. Hij werd door Prins Rainier uitgenodigd voor het festival in Monte Carlo en won er prompt Zilver. De jury en het publiek stonden versteld van de indrukwekkende omgang tussen James en zijn imposante olifant Joe. Rainier was zo onder de indruk dat hij James vroeg om nog een week na het festival te blijven. Samen, Prins Rainier, onze James Puydebois en Colonel Joe, gingen ze dagelijks op wandel in het Prinsdom. Ze trokken samen naar de zee en Joe nam elke dag zijn bad.
Integratie bij Krone
Toen Banda Vidane bij het Duitse circus Krone op pensioen ging, zocht Krone James op. Hij aarzelde nog enkele seizoenen en zei uiteindelijk ja. Een bijna voor de hand liggende keuze. James was immers uitgegroeid tot een wereldautoriteit in het omgaan met olifanten. Nu is James al enkel jaren bij Krone. Hij realiseerde daar ook opnieuw bijna het onmogelijke. Hij slaagde er in om, stapje voor stapje, de – toch al jaren niet in kudde levende – Joe te integreren binnen de olifantenkudde van Krone. Nu we in onze westerse cultuur hard op zoek zijn hoe we diversiteit kunnen managen, blijft het succesvolle integratieproces van James met zijn grote groep olifanten een fascinerend gebeuren. In de relatie mens-dier kun je immers heel scherp analoge basisprocessen waarnemen die ook tussen mensen en culturen bestaan. James integreerde niet alleen de grootste mannetjesolifant in de kudde. Meer nog, hij slaagde erin om de dieren in verschillende acts te laten samenwerken.
Wereldniveau
Maandenlang werkten Lacey en Puydebois het voorbije jaar samen om twaalf leeuwinnen uit vier verschillende roedels samen te brengen in één nummer waar ook twee imposante mannetjesleeuwen aan deelnemen. De minste inschattingsfout van de dresseurs kan daarbij een grote chaos veroorzaken. Leeuwinnen blijven in de natuur immers lang samen in een grote groep die zorgt voor de opvoeding van de welpen en die samen op jacht gaat. In die roedel laten ze maar één mannetjesleeuw toe. Maar in dit nummer komen ze, vanuit gescheiden leefkooien, samen in één grote neutrale ‘werkruimte’. Enkel daar is er respect voor elkaar en vallen ze elkaar niet aan. Voor sommige kenners is deze act van Lacey en Puydebois de sterkste dressuuract van de laatste dertig jaar. In elk geval was het Goud waard op dit 34ste Festival van Monte Carlo. Achter de jonge dierenleraar Martin Lacey staat een doorwinterde Vlaamse autoriteit. Op deze wijze is België toch nog bij de prijswinnaars van de grote internationale januari-circusfestivals!
