Een winterse ongure avond in Denderbelle. Even kloppen op het raam in de deur. Oef, eindelijk horen ze het. De deur zwaait open en ik zie een oud theaterzaaltje. Er staan wat eenwielers tegen de Zweedse banken en enkele grote gekleurde ballen. Hier geen overdosis circusuitrusting. Het ziet er allemaal heel gewoon uit. De sfeer is ook gemoedelijk. Deze jongens en meisjes zijn net terug van een dagje Eenwielerconventie in Neerpelt. Sommigen moesten nog studiewerk inhalen en lieten daarvoor vandaag wel verstek gaan.
Sarakasi is eigenlijk nog maar drie jaar bezig, waarvan twee als vzw. Maar wat betreft omkadering worden de jongeren hier sterk verwend. Er zijn telkens minstens twee begeleiders tijdens de lessen. Tijdens de open ruimte is er één begeleider. Dankzij de beurtrol weegt het vrijwilligerswerk niet te zwaar op de agenda van deze jongens. Hun namen: Maarten Adriaensens, Jeroem Van Keer, Dimitro Dons, Bart De Mey, Koen De Mey, Michiel Deprez en Preben Van Praet. We spraken af met Maarten en Jeroen.
Wat betekent circus voor jullie?
Maarten Adriaensens: “Circus is voor mij creatief bezig zijn met behulp van circustechnieken. Het is plezier maken en elkaar dingen leren in een open, ongedwongen sfeer.”
Jeroen Van Keer: “We hebben veel goesting. Iedereen is hier welkom, maar aangezien we ons niet gedragen als concurrenten moet ik eraan toevoegen dat het leren en ervaring opdoen net zo goed kan bij onze bevriende circusateliers. Dat versta ik dus onder het woord ‘open’.”
Hoe vond de circuskriebel zijn weg?
Jeroen: “We gingen vroeger naar Circusplaneet in Gent en gingen ook tweemaal op kamp met Circus Ronaldo. Daar bekwaamden we ons vooral in diabolo en jongleren. Op een muziekfestival waren we aan het jongleren geraakt en de spontane act genoot veel bijval bij de andere festivalkampeerders. Toen groeide het idee.”
Maarten: “Ik deelde in Gent hetzelfde huis als Koen en Bart De Mey. Je blijft dus in dezelfde sfeer. Na de studies keerden we terug naar onze roots. Via onze vuurshows verspreidde het nieuws omtrent een circusatelier in Dendermonde zich als een lopend vuurtje.”
Jullie geven voorlopig alleen multidisciplinaire lessen, dus geen lessen rond één specifieke techniek?
Jeroen: “De meeste jongeren die naar hier komen, hebben zich vooraf vaak al een goed idee gevormd van hetgeen ze willen leren. We spelen gewoon in op hun interesses. Vaak groeit er vanuit de ene interesse belangstelling voor een andere discipline. Dat proces verloopt erg vlot. Een vanzelfsprekendheid, want ze raken geboeid door wat ze zien bij de anderen.”
Volgden jullie les aan een circushogeschool?
Maarten: “Toch niet. We volgden wel een opleiding om les te mogen geven. Sommige onder ons hebben een lerarenopleiding achter de rug. We koesteren niet meteen de ambitie om van onze hobby ook ons beroep te maken. Ik ging bijvoorbeeld vorige week aan de slag in de merchandising.”
Maar het circusatelier mag nog groeien?
Jeroen: “We maakten tot nu toe geen promotie, maar iedereen die er zin in heeft is van harte welkom. We geven momenteel les op twee locaties. Dat is hier in het dorpszaaltje in Denderbelle en in de turnzaal van het H. Maagdcollege in Dendermonde.”
