Een groep met de naam ‘theater van één dag’: dat klinkt niet als iets waar je die dag dan koste wat kost bij wil zijn. Maar circuscompagnie Théâtre d’un Jour onderscheidt zich van eendagsvliegen door zijn volgehouden ambities. “Circus blijft nog veel te veel steken in technische krachttoeren,” aldus voortrekker Patrick Masset.
Ontvelde takkenstokken, een stronk waarop een zwiepende bijl inhakt: opvallend aan de productie ‘Het kind dat…’ is haar robuuste en tegelijk spirituele natuurlyriek. Datzelfde naturel voel je in het spel. Zweet, schurende lijven, rauwe opstootjes tussen zes artiesten: omdat je er zo dicht op zit, komt het allemaal heel direct binnen. Théâtre d’un Jour verbergt dan ook niet dat circustheater ‘werken’ is, laat bewust imperfecties toe en onthult zijn eigen mechaniek, bijvoorbeeld door de technicus mee in het geheel te trekken. De wondere wereld van oh’s en ah’s bij geoliede trucs en visuele effecten wordt vermenselijkt, ontkleed. Wat overblijft, zijn droomachtige flarden van een verhaal: jeugdherinneringen van de Franse kunstenaar Jephan de Villiers, bekeken door de blik van een slofferig marionettenjongetje.
In 2008 was ‘Het kind dat…’ te zien op de Zomer van Antwerpen, nadat Théâtre d’un Jour begonnen was aan zijn avontuur als eerste reizend circus van Wallonië. De eigen tent, een intieme bubbel van twaalf meter breed, biedt plek aan tweehonderd man en kwam tegemoet aan Massets verlangen om terug in de piste te gaan spelen, dicht bij het publiek. Al richtte hij Théâtre d’un Jour al op in 1994, tussen 1999 en 2008 werkte hijzelf als regisseur vooral bij Franse gezelschappen: La Fabrique Imaginaire, cie Vent d’Autan en cie l’Attraction Céleste. Hij raakte er uitgekeken, wou een eigen artistiek verhaal. Na de straattheaterproductie ‘Les Wawa’s’ rond tuinkabouters wordt nu bewust gemikt op Vlaanderen.
We treffen Masset in Brussel, net terug van Benares, Noord-India. Hij ging er zich inspireren voor twee nieuwe producties. “We zochten tradities en rituelen rond de dood op. In Benares arriveren Indiërs van over het hele land met hun doden, om ze daar te verbranden en ze zo in het nirvana te brengen. Het etmaal rond gaan er lijken in de fik, aan de oever van de Ganges. Enige plechtigheid ontbreekt totaal, overal lopen koeien en honden rond. Echt geschift, maar het geeft je wel een heel ander beeld op leven en dood. Wat hier palliatieve zorg heet, is daar gewoon alledaagse kost. Het zijn echt twee werelden.”
Wat interesseert jullie in die clash tussen het hogere en de tastbare realiteit? Ook in ‘Het kind dat…’ zit dat rituele, maar tegelijk wordt elke illusie meteen doorbroken.
Patrick Masset: “De dood en de tijd zijn thema’s die in al mijn voorstellingen terugkeren. We leven in een gefragmenteerde wereld, daarom is er weer nood aan rituelen, aan tragedie. Tegelijk wordt onze wereld erg geplaagd door de illusie, kijk naar Hollywood. Die films zijn daar echt goed in, met de beste technici, de beste scenarioschrijvers. Ze weten perfect hoe ze je bijna aan het wenen moeten brengen. Ik haat dat. En ik schaam me, omdat ze me erin luizen. Nee, illusie is dé leugen van deze tijd. Het reële bestaat niet meer. Dus is het noodzakelijk om die illusie te breken als iets vals, iets ouds. Ik wil mensen steeds opnieuw terugtrekken naar het reële, het hier en nu, maar dat mag het dromen niet in de weg staan. Bizar genoeg storen die breuken in de illusie de voorstelling niet. Net via het reële raak je weer makkelijker aan de andere kant: ‘het metafysische’, al hou ik niet van dat woord. Het theater is een plek voor waarheid.”
Vandaar jouw verzet tegen loutere trucs in circus?
“Ja, het Franse circus bleef me te veel steken in krachttoeren. Het is meer sport dan kunst. Er zijn wel ideeën, maar mensen trainen liever zes uur per dag op hun techniek. En dan rest hen te weinig energie voor het artistieke werk. Dat maakt van circus de enige oude discipline die nog geen komaf gemaakt heeft met zijn techniek. Nog steeds zie je de jongleurkunstjes van altijd. Wie de colonne à trois beheerst, moet naar de colonne à quatre, enzovoort. Op hoog niveau, hé! Maar het herhaalt zich van voorstelling naar voorstelling, van gezelschap tot gezelschap. Ik wil vertrekken van een persoonlijke schriftuur. Daarom lieten we ons voor ‘Het kind dat…’ inspireren door de beeldende kunst, door het universum en de jeugdjaren van Jephan de Villiers. Zijn werk zelf is me wat te symbolisch, maar zijn thema’s boeiden me.”
Je blijft wel werken met circusartiesten.
“Het zijn harde werkers, en ik vind ze doorgaans nieuwsgieriger dan theateracteurs. Als ze hun techniek durven loslaten, levert dat boeiende resultaten op. Alleen hebben de meesten na hun opleiding vijf, zes jaar als gek moeten trainen op hun kunde, en zijn ze dat tegen hun achtentwintigste zo moe dat ze uit zichzelf nog weinig zin hebben om veel te experimenten, terwijl ze gefrustreerd raken omdat ze niet meer dezelfde fysieke kracht of souplesse hebben als op hun tweeëntwintigste. Bij acteurs daarentegen neemt de maturiteit enkel toe, maar zo kweken zij ook een zekerheid waar ik helemaal niet van hou. Ik zie graag breekbaarheid, twijfel. Het vraagt meer, maar je krijgt meer paradoxen, meer rijkdom, meer kleur op scène.”
Ook de keuze voor de tent is een keuze voor circus, terwijl je net van die traditie af wil.
“Het is voor mij ook geen circustent, maar een plek van extreme nabijheid, waardoor mensen zich soms zelfs op hun ongemak gaan voelen. Bovendien spelen we in die tent in eigen huis, meer op eigen voorwaarden. Zo droom ik ook van een eigen ensemble, iets waarin ik erg opkijk naar Robert Lepage. Hij heeft zijn eigen structuur kunnen uitbouwen, langzaamaan, volgehouden. Hij heeft nu de luxe om uit te nodigen wie hij maar wil, voor de tijd die hij bepaalt. En als regisseur is hij een kei in het samenbrengen van werelden die je samen niet voor mogelijk houdt, zoals Cocteau en Miles Davies in ‘Les Aiguilles et l’opium’. Van die combinaties droom ik ook. Alleen voelde ik daar in Wallonië de context niet meer voor. Ik was al die onderhandelingen met programmatoren moe. In een tent kan je alles zelf organiseren, raak je makkelijker tot wat je wil, vanuit een veel klaardere visie.”
Wat miste je dan precies in Wallonië dat je in Vlaanderen wel vindt?
“Er is geen artistiek gesprek. Programmatoren zijn vaak politiek benoemd en tonen zich doorgaans heel weinig competent. En het zijn die mensen die de grote huizen leiden. Men gaat samen naar het voetbal, niet naar het theater. In Vlaanderen voel je een cultuurvisie die misschien iets elitairder is, en dat vind ik jammer, maar er is ook politieke wil om iets te ondersteunen. Er is discussie, men verdedigt iets. Ook de groepen die me momenteel boeien, zijn Vlaams: Tg Stan, Les Ballets C de la B, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Needcompany… ‘Isabella’s Room’ heeft me getekend voor de komende tien jaar. In Wallonië verrassen zelfs meer toegewijde makers me al jaren niet meer. Ik mik dus niet op Vlaanderen vanuit arrivisme, maar vanuit interesse. Ik wil verder, ben nog te weinig trots over wat ik toon. Zelfs ‘Het kind dat…’ woog voor mij nog te licht, er was door geldgebrek te weinig tijd om door te werken.”
Wat worden de volgende voorstellingen dan?
“‘Alaska’ wordt veeleer theater, vermengd met circus, tekst, beelden, objecttheater, zang, dans. Ik zou er graag een langere voorstelling van twee-drie uur van maken. We willen het klassieke waw-gevoel doorbreken en mensen tegelijk meenemen naar een plek die ze nog niet kenden. En het tweede project is opera-circus, een geheel van tableaux vivants met klassieke zangers, die gedragen worden door acrobaten. We hebben dat al eens uitgeprobeerd, en ik geloof dat het een bom kan worden. Zangers worden bang om te vallen, ze gaan niet meer op hun stem letten en zo komt die er net beter uit. Terwijl zo’n acrobaat acht jaar geoefend heeft en ineens een patattenzak over zich krijgt, waardoor hij zijn trucs kwijtspeelt. Hij kan enkel nog proberen om niet te sterven onder dat gewicht.”
