Het is bijna zover en de spanning is te snijden. Op de tribune van de circustent zitten honderden kinderen uit de scholen in de buurt. Ze wachten op wat komen zal, de ene al wat rustiger dan de andere. In de coulissen achter het podium staan de artiesten: de gastjes uit het sociaal circusproject van ‘Crescer e Viver’. Al enkele weken zijn ze aan het werken aan de voorstelling. Met de jongeren uit de productiegroep als hun leermeesters hebben ze circusnummertjes in elkaar gezet. Bloed, zweet en tranen heeft dat gekost, want op zich zijn het niet de gemakkelijkste gasten, onze circusartiesten.
In Brazilië heeft armoede een kleur. Kinderen met een zwarte huidskleur hebben het vaak hard te verduren. Hun leven is niet zo evident als dat van een kind dat geboren is met een blanke huid. De dagdagelijkse gebeurtenissen hebben vaak de dimensie van menselijke drama’s. Overleven is de enige boodschap en die krijg je al mee met de paplepel. Daarom zijn de kinderen uit de favela’s van Rio de Janeiro berucht. En toch staan ze hier nu, achter het doek, hun adem inhoudend, enkele seconden voordat ze het podium veroveren. Want hier in het circus is iedereen gelijk. Welke kleur je huid is – zwart of blank – iedereen blinkt in de spotlichten. In welke buurt je ook geboren bent, het applaus neem je in ontvangst als een koning te rijk! En zo wordt een kind uit de favela beroemd! Al is het maar voor even… Dat is de magie van sociaal circus.
