Elke vakman spreekt zijn eigen taal. En omdat het circus een bonte verzameling vaklui is, stelt CircusMagazine een lexicon op. Specialisten uit het domein vertellen over hun beroep, wij destilleren een woordenboek met de opvallendste gemene delers of juist de scherpste tegenstellingen, en zoeken zo in één beweging naar het wezen van circus. Hoe ziet een clown zijn beroep? Wat is essentieel voor een clown? Sommigen denken misschien aan een rode neus, te grote schoenen of taarten in het gezicht. Anderen zien eerder Charlie Chaplin voor ogen. Of Donald Trump. Enkele professionele clowns delen hun visie op hun geliefde ambacht.
Afleren
Iedereen heeft een clown in zich, maar om die naar boven te halen, moet je een aantal gedragingen afleren (sv). Die gedragingen zijn ontstaan omdat we als ernstige volwassenen niet kinderachtig of belachelijk willen overkomen (tr).
Contact
Een clown gooit zijn uitstraling in de strijd (sv) om het direct contact met het publiek te verzekeren (tr). Al dan niet zal hij dat publiek op een humoristische of emotionele manier op het verkeerde been te zetten (sg).
Falen
Het inherente falen van de clown onderscheidt hem van andere artiesten (tr).
Fantasie
Bij clowns is de lijn tussen realiteit en fantasie flinterdun. Een clown ziet, verkent en proeft elk voorwerp en elke situatie voor de eerste keer, en deelt zijn gevoelens daarbij met de toeschouwer (tr).
Film
Clowns zijn sterk doorgedrongen in de filmindustrie. In het bijzonder bleken stomme films uit het begin van de twintigste eeuw een geschikt medium voor clowns als Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Laurel & Hardy en consoorten. Maar ook in de latere generatie filmmakers liepen er clowns rond, zoals Harpo Marx, Jacques Tati en Roberto Benigni.
Gedrag
Wie beroepshalve clownerie beoefent, zal in het dagelijkse leven sneller interesse krijgen in het gedrag van de medemens (sv). Soms helpt het om in het dagelijkse leven in clownsmodus te stappen, om beter te relativeren en minder te oordelen (tr).
Herdefiniëren
Door de wereld te bekijken met de verwondering van een kind, is de clown meester in het herdefiniëren van voorwerpen en situaties. Hij gebruikt objecten anders dan je zou verwachten (fv).
Heruitvinden
Hoewel de meeste clowns een onderscheid maken tussen het werk als clown en het echte leven, is het personage van de clown wel gebaseerd op het karakter van de vertolker. De clown is een heruitvinding van de vertolker op basis van zijn naïviteit en onschuld (sv).
Humor
Sommige clowns hechten er belang aan dat clowns humor brengen (ph), vaak door de onverwachte oplossingen die ze bedenken voor hun problemen. (dm) citeert Ief Gilis: ‘In vijf minuten kan je een grap bedenken, maar het duurt twintig jaar voor je een goede clown bent.’
Iedereen
Volgens sommigen is iedereen clown, want iedereen speelt, iedereen faalt (sv). Anderen vinden juist van niet, en benadrukken het aparte talent dat je nodig hebt om clown te worden (ph). Volgens (bw) ligt de weg voor iedereen open, maar voelt niet iedereen zich goed op die weg. Talent kan helpen, maar vooral de wil om in diep contact met jezelf en de andere te treden, is van belang. Hij noemt het: zelfconfrontatie in lichtheid.
Ja
Een clown denkt positief (dm) en zegt fundamenteel ‘ja’ tegen alles (tr). Hij accepteert de situatie zoals die aan hem wordt gepresenteerd.
Klein
Het metier van de clown zit niet in extreme uitvergrotingen van situaties, maar juist in kleine dagdagelijkse problemen waar we allemaal mee geconfronteerd worden. Of zoals (sg) zegt: ‘’t Is zo onnozel als het groot is, en toch lachen we ons kapot.’
Kwetsbaar
Het verschil tussen clownerie en comedy is de veiligheidsfactor. Het gesproken woord geeft eerder aanleiding tot ‘geestige’ humor, waarbij iemand grappig kan zijn zonder zichzelf kwetsbaar op te stellen. De clown daarentegen is getraind in het accepteren van zijn kwetsbaarheid, wat naast humor ook poëzie kan opleveren (bw).
Moment
De clown leeft in het moment, hij springt in het diepe, onbekende ‘nu’. Daardoor kan je een clownsnummer moeilijk repeteren (bw).
Neus
Een rode neus of overmaats kostuum kan helpen om de clown zichtbaar en herkenbaar te maken voor het publiek, zodat hij een vrijgeleide krijgt om naast het normale pad te wandelen (tr).
Niks
‘Een clown kan niks, maar moet er wel bovenuit steken’ (sg).
Regenboogmens
Iemand die in de publieke omgeving opvalt door anders dan de anderen te zijn. Deze persoon zorgt hierdoor dat de omgeving even opkijkt en uit zijn geschematiseerde rol valt. Alle clowns zijn regenboogmensen (fv).
Schmink
Wordt aangebracht bij de clown om zijn menselijkheid in de verf te zetten (fv). Niet alle clowns maken er gebruik van, maar voor sommigen is het een deel van hun transformatieritueel (ph).
Spiegel
Enerzijds staat de clown los van de sociale conventies en kan hij op die manier zijn publiek een spiegel voorhouden (bw). Anderzijds moet een clown ook zelf kunnen spiegelen om interactie met zijn publiek aan te gaan. Clowns die werken met vrijwilligers uit het publiek, krijgen het meeste gedaan van hun helpers door hen op hun gemak te stellen. Hiertoe hoort een goeie clown de vrijwilliger in kwestie snel te ‘lezen’ om hem nadien respectvol en subtiel spiegelen, door bijvoorbeeld diens ademhalingsritme over te nemen (fv).
Verlangen
Een clown bekijkt de wereld vanuit zijn diepste wensen en verlangens (sv).
Ziekenhuis
De clown is geboren in het circus (tr), maar bleek als herkenbare, eerlijke, kwetsbare en betrouwbare figuur heel waardevol in ziekenhuizen, zorgcentra, geriatrische afdelingen, vluchtelingencentra en oorlogslanden (bw). Hij kan een klein lichtpunt zijn in tijden van groot lijden.
Zotheid
Humanist Desiderius Erasmus schreef in zijn Laus Stultitiae (‘Lof der Zotheid’): ‘De woorden die een wijs man zijn leven zouden kosten, schenken ons verbazend veel plezier wanneer ze uitgesproken worden door een clown’ (sg).
