Met hun vierde voorstelling is de Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger opnieuw in grootse doen. ‘Halka’ is een opzwepende ode aan een eeuwenlange traditie van menselijke piramides en soefistische rituelen. Je waant je op een Marokkaans marktplein bij valavond!

Het sprookje van het meest bekende circusgezelschap uit Marokko startte in 2003. Toen nodigde Sanae El Kamouni, nu directrice van de compagnie, de bekende regisseur Aurélien Bory (Cie 111) uit voor een stage in Tanger. Op het strand van die noord-Marokkaanse stad, gelegen aan de Straat van Gibraltar, wordt er immers al decennialang acrobatie beoefend. Atleten trainen er dagelijks, pupillen leren er de stiel van ervaren meesters, castingagenten komen er de meest beloftevolle acrobaten scouten. Maar een professionele, hedendaagse circusvoorstelling: die was in Marokko destijds nog niet gemaakt. De stage van Bory bleek een succes. Hij liet vervolgens audities organiseren in het hele land voor de creatie ‘Taoub’ (Arabisch voor ‘doek’). Dat stuk werd een enorme hit. ‘Taoub’ toerde zes jaar langs festivals in twintig landen.
Nadien werd de groep ook een echt gezelschap. In 2009 volgde de tweede productie ‘Chouf Ochouf’, geregisseerd door het Zwitserse duo Zimmermann & de Perrot. Voor Marseille Culturele Hoofdstad 2013 creëerde opnieuw Aurélien Bory het derde stuk ‘Azimut’. Ondertussen is de ster van de Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger al dusdanig gerezen dat het gezelschap deels naar Frankrijk verhuisde en de coproducenten er voor het uitkiezen heeft.
Hun vierde stuk ‘Halka’ ging in september 2016 in première op de Biennale de la Danse in Lyon. Sindsdien is het op tournee door Europa en Marokko. Afgelopen zomer was ‘Halka’ onder meer te zien tijdens PERPLX (in een frontale schouwburg), op de Zomer van Antwerpen (in een circustent met het publiek rondom) en tijdens het Oerol-festival op Terschelling (in openlucht op het strand). Drie heel verschillende contexten dus, maar overal was een groot applaus hun deel.
‘Halka’ is de eerste échte collectieve creatie van de Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger. Als coach kozen ze voor acrobatiegoeroe Abdeliazide Senhadji van het Franse Compagnie XY (bekend van ‘Le Grand C’ en ‘Il n’est pas encore minuit’). De titel ‘Halka’ verwijst naar de cirkelvormige opstellingen waarin opvoeringen worden gegeven, van acrobatie tot vertellingen en muziek. De grote sterkte van deze voorstelling is dat het die vibe van de Marokkaanse marktpleinen echt voelbaar maakt. De live muziek en het gezang, de chaos en het drukke geroezemoes: je waant je zo op het broeierige Djemaa el Fna-plein in Marakkesh bij valavond.
Genderrollen
‘Halka’ begint sterk. Vier acrobaten zetten zich klaar in het midden van het speelvlak. Ze slaan een facha om hun middel, een ceintuur van opgerolde stof. Daarna komen er vier andere, duidelijk sterkere mannen achter hen staan – net bodyguards. Zij grijpen die ceintuur vast en beginnen rond te lopen, terwijl hun partners ondertussen salto’s, flikflaks en radslagen maken, als ware het hondjes aan de leiband. Heel grappig.
Daarna komen de andere acrobaten binnengedwarreld. Onder hen ook twee vrouwen. Zij staan stevig hun mannetje. De grote, sterke Najwa Aarras, ooit nog wereldkampioen martial arts, wint met sprekend gemak een potje armworstelen en laat zich stoer als een koningin dragen door tien mannen. De andere dame is de kleine Amal Hammich, afkomstig uit een bekende Marokkaanse familie die al zeven generaties lang acrobaten aflevert. Zij wordt door de heren heen en weer geworpen in de lucht, maar staat even later ook weer lekker de rest van de bende te dirigeren. Het is door dit soort kleine scènes – denk ook: mannelijke buikdansers – dat ‘Halka’ zachtjes morrelt aan de dominante genderrollen uit de nog steeds erg patriarchale Marokkaanse samenleving.
Het enige attribuut uit deze voorstelling is een djefna: een cilindervormige ton die normaal dient om de was te doen, maar hier gebruikt wordt om op te balanceren, piramides mee te bouwen of met voeten en handen ritmes op te produceren. En dan is er natuurlijk ook nog het zand, dat in de laatste scènes naar beneden dwarrelt en het hele speelvlak bedekt. Zo wordt de piste plots het strand van Tanger, waar de acrobaten hun ultieme specialiteit op kunnen uitoefenen: de menselijke piramide. Met sprekend gemak bouwen ze er tot wel vier verdiepingen hoog, in allerlei variaties. Al sinds de 16de eeuw wordt deze kunst beoefend in Marokko. Aanvankelijk niet als kunst, maar wel als wapen in de oorlogsstrijd: de menselijke piramides dienden om de vijand in de verte te bespioneren over hoge muurtjes.
Het technische kunnen is dus hoog in ‘Halka’. Maar sfeer, ritme en muziek zijn minstens even belangrijke elementen in dit totaalspektakel. De regie is inventief, vol originele vondsten die voorbijgaan aan circusclichés. De chaos op scène wordt strak gechoreografeerd. Het maakt ‘Halka’ tot een opwindende ontmoeting met een andere cultuur, veel meer dan louter een steriele serie circuskunstjes.
