Tijdens de zomervakantie gaan de circusscholen traditioneel even op vakantie. Vaak organiseren ze ter plaatse circuskampen, soms trekken ze er zelf op uit. Toch wordt er ook tijdens de zomer hard getraind bij Ell Circo d’ell Fuego. De Antwerpse circusschool, die voornamelijk vanuit acro-circus inzet op techniekvernieuwing, begon afgelopen schooljaar met het organiseren van een lessenreeks ‘vliegende trapeze’ en is zo de eerste school in Vlaanderen die deze discipline aanbiedt. Meer nog: ze hebben er hun missie van gemaakt om de vliegende trapeze bij het brede publiek te promoten.
Aan de lessen is een demoteam met de gevleugelde naam ‘the Fantastic Flying Fuego’s’ gekoppeld, dat bestaat uit gevorderde leerlingen en enkele docenten. Zij verzorgen optredens gevolgd door initiaties om het brede publiek kennis te laten maken met deze discipline. Slim bekeken, want de ideale manier om potentiële deelnemers te verleiden is uiteraard om ze het zelf ook een keertje te laten proberen. Precies wat ik ga doen!
Ik vind de Fantastic Flying Fuego’s terug in het pakhuis in de Joossensgang waar ze nog voor enkele weken trainen. De rest van de circusschool is net verhuisd naar de spiksplinternieuwe multisportzaal SPRK. De vliegende-trapezeconstructie hebben ze hier nog even laten staan, zodat de demogroep kan oefenen voor de Zomer van Antwerpen waar ze aan het eind van de zomer geprogrammeerd staat. Dat wil zeggen: als de omstandigheden het toestaan, want de coronamaatregelen zijn voor Antwerpen net een stuk strenger geworden. De leden van de groep komen daarom een voor een met mondmaskertje het pakhuis binnen. Vandaag bestaat het demoteam uit zo’n achttal leden, een bonte mix van mannen en vrouwen van verschillende leeftijden met al wat ervaring. Enkele vliegers, die normaal uit andere uithoeken van Vlaanderen komen, zagen het vandaag niet zitten om naar Antwerpen te komen. Toch zit de sfeer in de groep meteen goed: de aanwezigen praten bij en warmen hun spieren op. Ik doe mee, en krijg het advies om vooral niet te vergeten de schouders los te maken. Straks zal ik begrijpen waarom.
Lesgever Thomas Guillaume geeft me de nodige instructies en ik krijg ter beveiliging een saltogordel om. Op de grond legt hij uit hoe de ritmische bewegingen aan de trapeze in zijn werk gaan. Toegegeven, ik ben verre van een held als het over hoogtes gaat. Gelukkig weten ze bij de Fuego’s wel hoe ze een beginner moeten geruststellen. De eerste keer wanneer ik de ladder naar het platformpje beklim, sta ik te beven op mijn benen. Twee ervaren vliegers zijn met mij mee naar boven geklommen: zij helpen mij om de saltogordel aan de lounge te bevestigen en houden de trapeze op de juiste hoogte voor mij uit zodat ik hem kan vasthouden. Thomas, die de lijn van mijn saltogordel bedient, roept onderaan de crashmat nog eens de instructies die hij net op de begane grond gaf, en geeft me dan het teken voor de sprong.
Ik probeer mijn hoogtevrees te vergeten en spring van het platform. Ik hoor Thomas beneden de instructies roepen (“Achter, voor…. Houden, houden! Achter, voor, achter voor, houden, houden…’), maar mede door de spanning voel ik mijn lijf alle kanten uitgaan. Na enkele swings, waarbij mijn lichaam als een soort pendulum door de lucht raast, geeft Thomas aan wanneer ik de trapeze mag loslaten en slaag ik erin veilig te landen op de mat. Thomas geeft me mee dat ik erg hoog van het platform sprong en me heel de vlucht aan mijn armen opgetrokken hield. Ik knik, maar voel vooral nog de adrenaline door mijn lijf gieren. Cool, ik heb het gedurfd!
Nog bevend neem ik een slokje water en kijk intussen naar de souplesse en elegantie waarmee de vliegers een voor een hun bewegingen in de lucht uitproberen. De sfeer is ontspannen: ieder oefent om de beurt en op eigen niveau trucs aan de trapeze, en de vliegers geven elkaar bemoedigende feedback.
Dan is het een tweede keer aan mij, ik ben al wat minder bang, en vervolgens een derde keer. Midden in de lucht denk ik eraan dat ik me aan mijn armen mag laten hangen. Ik ontspan niet enkel mijn armen, maar ook mijn vingers en voel dat mijn handen de trapeze loslaten. Gelukkig is Thomas alert, houdt hij de lounge stevig vast en remt hij mijn val af, waardoor ik zacht op de mat land. Ik ben niet eens erg geschrokken, maar bij een val is het belangrijk om zo snel mogelijk nog eens te proberen. Ik klim opnieuw naar het platform en dit keer heb ik begrepen wat ik moet doen. Ik hoor Thomas de instructies roepen, en verbaas mezelf door het ritme onder de knie te krijgen. Op de achtergrond speelt uit een speaker het Italiaanse Eurosonglied ‘Volare’. Het kan haast niet toepasselijker, ik vlieg!
Eenmaal geland vraag ik rond hoe deze Fuego’s bij de vliegende trapeze uitkwamen. Ik verneem dat een groot aantal onder hen het ooit in het buitenland probeerde, vaak per toeval. Tot afgelopen schooljaar trainden sommigen ook in l’Atelier du Trapèze in Schaarbeek, hoor ik. Ook op de Extreme Convention bood Ell Circo d’ell Fuego meermaals de discipline aan, waarop er geregeld kortere stages volgden. Gezien het succes van deze stages besloten ze vliegende trapeze als eerste Vlaamse circusschool op te nemen in hun vaste lesaanbod. Niet alleen hebben ze twee lesgroepen voor volwassenen, ook kinderen vanaf 10 jaar kunnen van de discipline proeven.
Ik vind het spectaculair om te kijken hoe er in de lucht passages – het slingeren van de ene naar de andere trapeze – worden uitgevoerd. Voor mij is het erg verrassend hoe rustig de uitvoering in werkelijkheid is. Op voorhand beeldde ik me immers in dat het een vrij explosieve discipline moest zijn, vanwege de grote afstand die je in de lucht aflegt. Het tegendeel blijkt waar: ik leer dat je vooral niet te hoog van het platform mag springen, en dat het ritme waaraan je door de lucht vliegt eerder kalm is. “We hebben ook een yogalerares die les volgt,” vertelt Thomas me nog. “Zij vindt de stretch die het haar bezorgt fantastisch.”
Aangezien ik de basis onder de knie heb, krijg ik nog mee hoe ik me ondersteboven aan mijn knieën kan laten hangen aan de trapeze. Ik beklim nog twee keer de ladder, maar moet in de lucht constateren dat de vermoeidheid in mijn armen toeslaat. Dan maar de oplossing voor op kinderfeestjes: ze laten de trapeze zakken, hangen mij aan mijn knieën eraan, hijsen de trapeze weer in de lucht en duwen mij in gang. Niet vergeten te zwaaien voor de foto!
Wanneer de training er na anderhalf uur op zit en de Fuego’s nog hun voorbereiding voor de Zomer van Antwerpen bespreken, neem ik afscheid. Het voelt alsof ik mezelf overwonnen heb en ik heb eigenlijk zin om volgende week opnieuw langs te komen. Op de treinrit terug bekijk ik nog de filmpjes die de Fantastic Flying Fuego’s maakten met James Cooke voor VIER-programma ‘The Battle’. Spoiler: in een retestrak acrobatenpakje weet Cooke, die eerst nog langs de hypnotiseur moet om zijn hoogtevrees te bedwingen, de aangeleerde vliegende-trapezetrucs tot een goed einde te brengen. De lesgevers bij Ell Circo d’ell Fuego weten werkelijk iedereen voor deze discipline te winnen. Probeer de vliegende trapeze dus vooral zelf een keertje uit op een demosessie, of haast je en schrijf meteen in voor de lessenreeks!
