Het acrobatische nummer à la bascule behoort niet tot de oude circusdisciplines. Er is slechts voor de eerste keer sprake van in 1903, toen de Duitse artiest Wotpert ermee voor de dag kwam in de Berlijnse Wintergarten. Het basculewerk is later een specialiteit geworden van vooral Hongaarse en Bulgaarse troepen. Nu nog is het een gegeerde act in grote circussen, waarbij soms door tien tot twaalf personen aan het nummer wordt deelgenomen.
Voor bascule, ook bekend onder zijn Duitse naam Schleuderbrett, maakt men gebruik van een soort wipplank. Deze plank is aan beide uiteinden opgevuld en wordt in het midden ondersteund door een ijzeren onderstel of chassis. Aan het ene einde staat de springer of vlieger klaar. Aan de andere kant staat een artiest (of twee artiesten) die dan meestal van op een verhoog op de schuin naar boven gerichte plank springt, waardoor de vlieger in de lucht wordt gekatapulteerd. Bascule is in regel groepswerk met lastige en indrukwekkende tricks, soms met gebruik van meerdere wipplanken.
Niet zoveel Belgische artiesten waagden zich aan het genre. Brusselaar François Vandeputte, bijgenaamd Clemendos, vormde al voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog een springtroep ‘à la bascule’, die aanvankelijk uit drie personen bestond, maar later vijf of zes leden telde. Het gezelschap wijzigde al eens van naam. Eerst was er sprake van Clemendos, later was dat troep Marywards, Heapy’s, Oxford of Juanito’s. Ze hebben vooral in België opgetreden en toen ze in 1939 stonden geprogrammeerd in de Brusselse Variétés vertoonden Les 5 Marywards ‘travail à la bascule, doubles et triples sauts périlleux rattrappés à la perche de 4m de hauteur.’
De Brusselse Windsor Troupe kende tijdens het interbellum een internationale bekendheid. De vier artiesten noemden zichzelf trampoline-acrobaten, maar hun nummer combineerden ze met bascule en vast rek. Men kon hen aan het werk zien bij de circussen Semay, Van Bever, Bouglione en Pinder, maar ook in variétézalen in Duitsland en bij ons in het Brusselse Palais d’Eté en het Variétés Palace van Charleroi. In 1936 waagden ze zich aan een Australische tournee.
Eugène Babusio (1886-1950) was naast clown ook een goed acrobaat. Toen hij rond 1920-1922 bij Circus Demeyer speelde, vertoonde hij er een bascule-act met zijn vrouw Gertrude en leerling Harry Merks. Vanaf 1923 werd het nummer met enkele leden uitgebreid en was The Otawa Troup te zien bij het gekende Duitse Circus Sarrasani.
De meest gekende springplankartiesten van bij ons waren ongetwijfeld de Bradforts. Zij zorgden voor internationale uitstraling met optredens in de meeste grote circussen en variététheaters over gans Europa, maar ook in Zuid-Afrika en Australië oogstten ze succes. Alles begon met Pierre Cesar (1868-1947) uit St. Jans-Molenbeek en zijn zonen Jean en Jules. Al in 1911 kon men ze treffen in het Gentse Nieuw Circus als ‘acrobaten op bascuul’. Later specialiseerden ze zich in het perchewerk. Intussen was Jeans vrouw Jeanne Guerre het gezelschap komen vervoegen en kwamen de kinderen van Jean, Jeannette en Armand, en schoondochter Marie-Louise Van Peteghem erbij. Ook Raoul Vermeiren en vrouw Lena zijn jaren bij de Bradforts actief geweest. In de jaren zestig werd de wipplank vervangen door de Russische schommel. De troep Bradfort heeft bestaan tot 1980.
