Elk jaar een of meerdere nieuwe shows presenteren, een gevestigde waarde zijn in het circuslandschap, internationaal gerespecteerd worden en ook nog eens goed je boterham verdienen. Jij tekent toch ook meteen? Wel, het is mogelijk. Dat bewijst de familie Bouglione sinds lange tijd in Frankrijk. Hoe is het zo ver kunnen komen, en hoe ga je zelf aan de slag? Het Circus Bouglione inspireert tot deze korte handleiding.

Afhankelijk van de bron (en de leeftijd van de bron), presenteren de Bougliones al zes, zeven of acht generaties circus. De legende gaat dat ene Michele Bouglione, een rijke stoffenhandelaar, op een dag verliefd werd op een zigeunermeisje. Hij liet alles achter voor haar, en samen stichtten ze een van de bekendste circusfamilies ter wereld. De iets minder romantische versie van het verhaal vertelt dat de Bougliones eigenlijk afstammen van het Oosterse Sintivolk en in de 19e eeuw naar Europa trokken. Na omzwervingen via Oost-Europa en Italië kwamen ze uiteindelijk in Frankrijk terecht. Welk verhaal je ook gelooft, feit is dat de naam Bouglione sinds midden 19de eeuw onafscheidelijk verbonden is met circus. De familiestamboom is gigantisch en de meeste familieleden zijn het circus trouw gebleven. Je kan dus maar beter vroeg beginnen aan de uitbouw van je circusimperium – of beter nog, je zou al enkele decennia bezig moeten zijn!
In 1934 kocht de familie Bouglione het Wintercircus van Parijs, een prachtig bouwwerk vlakbij de Place de la Republique, in het hart van de Franse hoofdstad. Het verhaal gaat dat circusdirecteur Mustafa Amar de Bougliones te snel af was bij de aankoop van een kudde olifanten. Toen circusdirecteur Amar vervolgens op het punt stond om ook nog het Parijse circusgebouw te kopen, namen de Bougliones wraak. Tijdens de veiling van het gebouw verdubbelden de Bougliones het bod van Amar. Ze kaapten het circusgebouw voor zijn neus weg en herdoopten het prompt tot Cirque d’Hiver Bouglione. Legende of realiteit? In elk geval, wat in 1934 dus misschien wel een impulsaankoop was, is ondertussen een serieuze appel voor de dorst. Het Cirque d’Hiver werd in 1850 gebouwd in opdracht van Napoleon III. Na talrijke renovaties ademt de circustempel vol gouden ornamenten en rode pluche nog altijd een bedwelmende klasse en grandeur uit. Zo’n historisch monument bezitten in het centrum van Parijs is ongetwijfeld een goede levensverzekering. Moraal van het verhaal: mocht je ooit twijfelen tussen investeren in vastgoed in Parijs of een kudde olifanten, kies dan resoluut voor de eerste optie. Je kleinkinderen zullen je dankbaar zijn.
Het komt in de beste families voor: de familie groeit, meningen verschillen en vroeg of laat kunnen sommige nonkels niet meer door dezelfde deur. Veel families gaan hieraan ten onder, de Bougliones maakten er hun sterkte van. Toen Alexandre Bouglione op eigen benen wilde staan, richtte hij zijn eigen onderneming op en reisde naar België. Zijn Parijse neven laten hem zijn ding doen in België, en vice versa. Wanneer de Parijse tak van de familie toch langzaamaan te groot werd en er te veel familieleden door de gangen van het Cirque d’Hiver liepen, werd hetzelfde principe toegepast. De Bouglione On Tour unit werd opgericht. Na 35 jaar niet gereisd te hebben, vertrok de ene helft van de Parijse familietak in 2015 weer op tournee door Frankrijk, terwijl de andere helft de zaken in Parijs bleef regelen. Verdeel en heers dus, en loop elkaar niet voor de voeten!
De Parijse Bougliones hebben de laatste jaren een heel typische eigen stijl ontwikkeld. Elke show garandeert een twaalftal klassieke circusacts, ondersteund door een groot en luid live circusorkest en een showballet. Prachtige kostuums met glitters en veren, veel klatergoud en een bedwelmende popcorngeur: het hoort er allemaal bij. Toen men in 2015 weer ging toeren, werd exact hetzelfde recept toegepast. Het publiek is ondertussen vertrouwd met de Bouglionestijl en keert jaarlijks terug voor een avondje gezellig ouderwets (en toch modern) circus met op het programma clowns, wilde dieren en trapezisten van uitzonderlijk niveau. Dat alles resulteert in een omzet van 18 à 19 miljoen euro per jaar. Geld dat meer dan welkom is, aangezien de opstart van de Bouglione on Tour unit alleen al een investering van 15 miljoen euro vergde…
In Frankrijk kan zowat elke circusdirecteur de naam Zavatta huren en op z’n wagens schilderen. Ooit stond Zavatta synoniem voor topclownerie en topcircus. Vandaag is de naam zijn glans kwijt, en circusondernemers beseffen langzaamaan dat de naam zelfs contraproductief werkt. Ooit ging Bouglione dezelfde kant op: in de jaren 90 waren er een handvol Cirques Bougliones, niet allemaal met dezelfde smetteloze reputatie. Sindsdien is een grote schoonmaak gehouden, de naam moest weer een exclusief kwaliteitslabel worden. Staat er vandaag geen Bouglione op je paspoort, dan kan je die naam ook beter niet op je circuswagens schilderen. Alles wordt in het werk gesteld om de naam Bouglione clean te houden. Dat bleek ook toen Franse dierenrechtenactivisten in 2016 met een filmpje op de proppen kwamen waaruit bleek dat de olifantentrainer die op dat moment in dienst bij Bouglione was, zijn dieren in het verleden niet altijd zachtaardig behandeld had. De beelden waren oud, circuleerden al langer, waren gefilmd toen de man in Engeland optrad en waren vooral nergens gelinkt aan Bouglione. Toch greep de directie meteen in: de trainer in kwestie werd prompt aan de deur gezet en het circus distantieerde zich uitdrukkelijk van elke vorm van dierenmishandeling. Het leverde de Bougliones zelfs een zuinig applausje op van hun grootste tegenstanders, een groep fanatieke dierenrechtenactivisten.
Zelf aan de slag
Als je zelf een circusimperium wil uitbouwen, kan je maar beter vandaag nog aan de slag. Sticht een groot gezin, investeer en ga decennialang verder met wat je doet. En misschien, heel misschien, stoten jij en je nazaten de Bougliones wel van hun troon en worden jullie de nieuwe Rois du Cirque!
