Een redactielid van CircusMagazine laat zijn of haar licht schijnen op de wondere wereld van het circus. Neemt ditmaal de pen ter hand: Liv Laveyne.

Als kind vond ik het een van de meest triestige sprookjes waarbij ik mijn moeder steevast vroeg om eerst het einde te vertellen en dan pas bij het begin te beginnen. Wist ik toen veel dat het ooit bon ton zou zijn in zoveel films, tv-series en theaterstukken om de structuur van een verhaal helemaal om te gooien. Maar dat idee van een andere dramaturgie zat toen nog ver verstoken. Het enige dat ik toen wou horen, was dat een vreemd eendje was uitgegroeid tot een mooie zwaan. Pas daarna kon ik al de onwetendheid, het gepest en vals gesnater dat het donzig, grijs scharminkel eerst moest ondergaan, verdragen. Week hart wellicht. Het overvalt me soms nog, maar misschien jammer steeds minder. En toch, afgelopen zomer overkwam het me nog eens geheel onverwachts. Toen ik Michiel Deprez als circusartiest de prijs in ontvangst zag nemen op TAZ (Theater aan Zee) voor het meest beloftevolle aanstormende talent.
Als een vreemde eend in de bijt, zo drentelde hij verlegen tussen al het theater- en performancegeweld uit Vlaanderens en Nederlands toneel- en dansopleidingen. Deze jongleur uit een circusschool die er met ‘Piste’ een pure, doorgedreven consequente voorstelling bracht. Zoals hij langzaam het speelrond voor zich uittekende met zaagsel dat hij zo-even tevoren op een ladder had verstrooid, hoe hij al dansend met het zaagsel wegglippend tussen zijn vingers jongleerde om vervolgens zware stenen ballen te manipuleren. Hoe hij zijn publiek meenam op die anatomische dissectie van wat zijn eigen circusdiscipline van het jongleren kon zijn, met knipoogjes zoals de glitterjas van de circusdirecteur die hij aantrok als regisseur van het spel. Of de bureaulampjes die door de toeschouwers mochten bediend worden. Hoe hij zich in die vijver van zaagsel overgaf aan de door het publiek geslagen bijt om te beslissen wanneer zijn verhaal begon en waar het eindigde. En hoe onderweg in zijn heel individuele zoektocht naar zichzelf als artiest plots in de piste een groter universum verscheen van rond elkaar tollende bollen als waren het planeten in een zonnestelsel. Het intiem persoonlijke naast het grote heelal, lichtheid naast letterlijke zwaarte, onstoffelijkheid naast stoffelijkheid. Uit stof zijn we gemaakt en tot stof zullen we terugkeren, leerde ik ooit uit een ander verhaal. Bij nader inzien bleek het hier zaagsel.
Middenin dat verhaal zag ik een jong talent, een klein eendje, langzaam transformeren tot iets wat een mooie zwaan belooft te worden. Althans dat is het verhaaltje dat ik graag zou hebben gehad dat mijn moeder me vertelde. Ik weet niet of het echt zo is. Ik zag mensen op TAZ zich afvragen of dit nu performance was. Net zoals ik een jaar eerder in een zaal in Tilburg bij dezelfde voorstelling een man kwaad hoorde weglopen, honend of dit nu wel circus was. En ik vroeg me af of Michiel Deprez ooit ergens in een bijt zou thuishoren. En toen bedacht ik me dat dat misschien het meest oninteressante einde van alles zou kunnen zijn. Een artiest die thuishoort in een bijt.
