Met Kegel en Kompas trekt Eva Kahan door Vlaanderen. Haar missie: de Vlaamse circusateliers in kaart brengen. In Mechelen zorgt circusatelier Circolito al bijna tien jaar voor het nodige circusvertier. Eva sprak met coördinator Lieven Leemans over de unieke Circolitokampen, Circus for Life en verre reizen naar Marokko.
Jullie staan bekend om jullie circuskampen. Wat moeten we ons daar concreet bij voorstellen?
Lieven Leemans: “Elk kamp wordt volledig uitgewerkt volgens een thema. Onze eerste kampen zaten vaak in de sprookjesachtige sfeer. Zo hebben we onder andere Oosters circus gehad – ‘Cirque Orient’ – en middeleeuws circus. Op het lesgeverweekend wordt er steeds uitgebreid gebrainstormd over het thema. Een grondige voorbereiding is noodzakelijk, want bij ons mag iedereen mee op kamp: zowel onze beginnende en gevorderde leerlingen als kinderen die geen les volgen bij Circolito. Concreet wil dit zeggen dat we dit jaar met 110 kinderen en jongeren zullen zijn. Meer dan de helft daarvan blijft slapen, in de slaaphoeve of in eigen tenten.”
Ligt het thema van dit jaar al vast?
“Je hebt geluk, het thema is net bekend gemaakt: Cowboys en Romeinen. Twee jaar geleden hebben we de thema’s voor het eerst een draai gegeven. Zo was het thema ‘superhelden’, maar in plaats van de klassieke Superman en konsoorten kregen we WC-man, de Flower Rangers, Mega Blindy,… Als je met 8- tot 16- jarigen werkt moet je die 16-jarigen ook kunnen boeien, hé. En vorig jaar was er het fameuze ‘WeWishYou’-kamp, waarin we eind augustus kerst, oudejaar en nieuwjaar hebben gevierd met alles erop en eraan. Eigenlijk is dat een hele toffe en ongedwongen manier om theater te spelen.”
Jullie hebben trouwens tijdens de echte kerstperiode geld ingezameld voor Music for Life, met de variant ‘Circus for Life’.
“Ons doel was van 12 uur ’s middags tot 12 uur ’s avonds steeds minstens vijf mensen aan het circussen te hebben, die zich per kwartier konden laten sponsoren. Er waren twee eervolle vermeldingen te winnen: voor wie het hoogste bedrag bijeen kreeg – 10 euro per kwartier – en wie het langst aan de gang bleef. Er heeft zelfs iemand elf van de twaalf uur gecircust: slechts twee pauzes van een kwartier én hij was een half uur te laat. We hebben ons doel gemakkelijk gehaald: het was zacht weer, ouders brachten soep, taart en pannenkoeken en op de koer brandde een gezellig vuurtje, waardoor er veel volk bleef plakken. Uiteindelijk zijn we die nacht dan nog naar Gent getrokken en hebben daar om 3.30 u onze cheque van 4 200 euro kunnen afgeven.”
Op jullie site las ik dat de productiegroep Philladoesh net naar Marokko is geweest. Hoe zijn jullie daar terecht gekomen?
“We wilden al lang met een productiegroep naar het buitenland. Dat leek ons een toffe beloning voor de vele repetities en het engagement dat van de productieleden wordt gevraagd, maar we vonden niet direct de juiste contacten. Maar plots viel het aanbod uit de lucht. Mechelen heeft een samenwerkingsovereenkomst met Nador, een stad in het noordoosten van Marokko. Via via werden we uitgenodigd op een plaatselijk kindertheaterfestival.”
“We zijn bijna hals over kop naar Marokko vertrokken: snel een video gemaakt, tickets besteld, een examenregeling gezocht met de scholen – want we vertrokken de week voor de Paasvakantie – en hup, het vliegtuig op. De meeste van onze jongeren hadden nog nooit gevlogen, dus daar begon de eerste nieuwe ervaring, al snel gevolgd door heel wat andere. De Franse wc’s met kraantje in plaats van wc-papier was zeker een cultuurshock. Maar dit detail even ter zijde: het hele avontuur was een ontzettend fijne ervaring!”
