Dé revelatie van verschillende Europese festivals de voorbij twee jaar is ongetwijfeld het Franse duo Un Loup pour l’Homme (Alexandre Fray en Frédéric Arsenault) met de voorstelling ‘Appris par Corps’. Tot 28 maart kan je hen in diverse cultuurcentra in Vlaanderen aan het werk zien.
De twee ontmoetten elkaar in 2004 in het Franse gezelschap Hendrick van der Zee en richtten een jaar later hun eigen gezelschap op, dat in 2006 laureaat werd van de prestigieuze wedstrijd Jeunes Talents Cirque. Balancerend tussen dans en acrobatie vertellen deze twee heren een universeel verhaal over broederschap, blind vertrouwen, wederzijdse afhankelijkheid en over de wolf in elk van ons. Een ‘arm’ circus dat al het onnodige achterwege laat en twee vechtende lichamen in trainingspak opvoert in een witte cirkel. Een interview met Alex, de drager van het gezelschap.
Om te beginnen eentje voor de fans: wie zijn je grote voorbeelden?
Alexandre Fray: “Ik ben opgegroeid met de vroege voorstellingen van Cirque Plume en verder bewonder ik Johann Le Guillerm, omdat zijn werk het resultaat is van een echt, eerlijk en bijna wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Ook de voorstellingen van Jean-Baptiste Andrée en Que-Cir-Que liggen me nauw aan het hart.”
Kan je ons iets vertellen over het creatieproces van ‘Appris par Corps’?
“We zijn voor ‘Appris par Corps’ vertrokken van wat we kennen: onze techniek (hand-op-hand acrobatie, red.) en de menselijke relatie die daaruit ontstaat. Ook sport is een grote inspiratiebron en dan vooral als plek van tragiek, want er is altijd iemand die de wedstrijd verliest. Een beetje zoals de Griekse tragedie, waar de held een strijd voert met zijn lot. Of zoals de leeuwentemmer in het circus. Die notie van strijd is essentieel in onze voorstelling, niet in de zin van concurrentie, maar wel hoe we kunnen samenwerken om de strijd tegen de natuurwetten niet te verliezen. En dan is er nog sport als spel. Die interpretatie is heel belangrijk want we proberen steeds om spelregels te schrijven die onze techniek moeilijker maken. Het is fascinerend om te zien hoe die zelfgekozen beperkingen ervoor zorgen dat de techniek plots betekenis krijgt, zoals Fred die geblinddoekt is en dus op mij moet vertrouwen om niet te vallen. Zo vertellen onze lichamen dan plots iets universeel menselijks.”
Is het belangrijk voor jullie om ‘circus’ te maken?
“Noch ik, noch Fred zijn opgegroeid in de klassieke circustraditie. Net als veel artiesten van onze generatie zijn we geschoold op een circushogeschool (Châlons-en-Champagne en Montréal, red.). Veel mensen linken ons dan ook eerder aan hedendaagse dans. Voor mij is het echter wel belangrijk om ‘circus’ te maken, wat vooral betekent dat je ‘doet’ en ‘gezien wordt’ en niet dat je toont of doet alsof. Wij zoeken constant naar het echte, naar de reële actie en niet naar een personage of een verhaal. Ik ben heel sterk beïnvloed door wat Grotowski, Artaud en Brook geschreven hebben over het theater en de aanwezigheid van de acteur. Een circusartiest vóór zijn publiek, dat is en blijft de essentie van wat wij doen.”
Wat biedt de toekomst?
“We willen graag het onderzoek dat gestart werd met ‘Appris par Corps’ verder zetten: niet de zoektocht naar het individu, maar naar datgene ‘tussen’ mensen, tussen vlieger en drager. We zullen het hebben over geweld, samenleven en boksen. We willen ook het lineaire van ons duo verbreken en daarom zijn we op zoek naar twee extra acrobaten. We kiezen bewust voor vier, een mannelijk en vierkant getal en niet vijf, wat rond en vrouwelijk is. Met nog twee mensen erbij zullen we dan eindelijk een gezelschap zijn en niet langer een duo.”
