Net van school en al met twee – of beter: acht – benen in de professionele wereld. Josse De Broeck, Petra Steindl, Hendrik Van Maele en Felix Zech studeerden als acrokwartet af aan de Fontys Academy of Circus and Performance Art in Tilburg en staan klaar om onder de naam ‘Familiar Faces’ de circuswereld te veroveren. CircusMagazine luisterde geboeid naar hun à la minute kunstdefinities, mijmeringen over vervlogen schooltijden en voorzichtige toekomstplannen.

Hoe kwamen jullie samen als kwartet?
Petra Steindl: “De school wilde een groot acrobatiecollectief samenstellen. Ze vroegen ons en vijf anderen of we wilden samenwerken. Zeven mensen zeiden ja en met die groep startten we in het eerste jaar. Eén van hen besliste na enkele weken om een andere techniek te doen, toen waren we nog met zes. Na twee projecten met de grote groep wilden we die ontbinden en als duo’s verder gaan. Hendrik en Josse zouden opnieuw auditie gaan doen in ESAC, Felix en ik wilden in dat geval ook liever verder als duo en de vlieger van het derde koppel wou niet meer samenwerken als het niet in de grote groep was.”
Josse De Broeck: “Maar dan besloten Hendrik en ik toch in ACaPA te blijven…”
Steindl: “Ze hadden een goed gevoel bij ons. We hadden een fijn gesprek en besloten als kwartet verder te gaan.”
Felix Zech: “Intussen wilden we ook onze discipline veranderen naar Russian bar (een lange buigbare baar waarmee twee dragers een vlieger in de lucht gooien, red.). Dat was een hype toen! We probeerden het op Extreme Convention en waren meteen verkocht. Op school waren ze daar minder blij mee. Uiteindelijk hebben ze toegestaan dat we als kwartet bleven samenwerken, maar dan wel met partneracrobatie en niet met de Russische barre.”
Hendrik Van Maele: “Het kwartet bestaat dus pas sinds het tweede jaar. De school was er niet gerust in, maar met ons eerste persoonlijke project hebben we iedereen overtuigd dat het goed zou komen.”
Hoe hebben jullie de overgang van schoolleven naar het ‘echte leven’ ervaren?
Zech: “Er was weinig sprake van een overgang. Meteen na ons afstuderen deden we een vooronderzoek met TENT Circustheater Producties en werkten we verder aan eigen materiaal.”
Steindl: “We hadden in ons laatste jaar al verschillende projecten buiten school, waardoor we geleidelijk loskwamen van het leven als student en de schok dus niet zo groot was.”
De Broeck: “Maar er is wel veel veranderd in vergelijking met het voorspelbare, gestructureerde schoolleven. Om te beginnen moesten we beslissen waar we zouden wonen. Kiezen we als gezelschap één plek? Of zoeken we elk een eigen thuisbasis en komen we samen om te werken?”
Van Maele: “Josse en Felix wonen in Rotterdam. Ik heb geen vaste woonst. Het leek me onnodig om huur te betalen omdat ik altijd wel ergens terecht kan bij vrienden of mijn ouders of op residentieplekken.”
Steindl: “Ik heb samen met mijn vriend een busje gekocht dat we hebben omgebouwd tot een woning.”
Zech: “Het gezelschap zullen we baseren in België, als vzw.”
Steindl: “Omdat de meerderheid van onze groep Belg is.” (lacht)
De Broeck: “In Vlaanderen is er een gunstig klimaat voor circus met het Circusdecreet en de ondersteuning door Circuscentrum. We hebben er een groot netwerk, onder meer omdat Hendrik en ik al van jongs af in een circusatelier zaten (bij Circolito en Cirkus in Beweging, red.). In Nederland hebben we ook contacten, maar die zijn recenter. Oostenrijk en Duitsland, waar Petra en Felix vandaan komen, waren nooit een optie.”
Steindl: “Maar ik wil wel ooit in Oostenrijk optreden!”
Wat is het verrassendste dat je hebt geleerd sinds je bent afgestudeerd?
Steindl: “Hoe je een wasbak inbouwt in een camionette.”
Zech: “Hoeveel werk er is naast trainen en optreden: dossiers schrijven, e-mails beantwoorden, zakelijke beslissingen nemen. Tegenwoordig houden wij zelfs ‘businessmeetings’ met ons vier om dat soort dingen te bespreken.”
Steindl: “En dan reageren we nog te laat op mails.”
Van Maele: “Ik heb beseft dat je niet afstudeert als volleerd circusartiest. Een circusopleiding is erg gefocust op de praktijk en je hebt zelf in de hand hoever je daarmee zal geraken na je afstuderen. Die technische basis is goed, maar je eigen werk maken houdt zoveel meer in dan circustechnisch kunnen.”
Zech: “Op school maakten we acts van tien minuten en werden we ondersteund bij elk project.”
De Broeck: “Je zit in die schoolbubbel en je bent je te weinig bewust van waar je eigenlijk mee bezig bent.”
Steindl: “We hadden na ons afstuderen ook auditie kunnen doen voor andere gezelschappen met meer ervaring om daar als uitvoerend artiest aan de slag te gaan, maar dat wilden we niet. We wilden meteen ons eigen ding doen, logisch dat dat niet gemakkelijk is.”
Van Maele: “Ik heb het gevoel dat we op school niet geleerd hebben wat het betekent om op een podium te staan. We hebben enkel geleerd om circus te doen op een podium. Maar wat als er geen circus is? Wat doen we dan op het podium?”
Zech: “Dat geldt misschien voor jou omdat je al je hele leven circus doet. Toen ik startte in ACaPA had ik nog nooit op een podium gestaan. Ik was heel blij dat ik me kon vasthouden aan mijn circustechniek tijdens die eerste stappen op een podium.”
Van Maele: “Wat ik bedoel, is dat ik nu besef dat je zo veel meer kan doen op een podium dan circus. Maar ik voel me er nog niet toe in staat. Omdat onze opleiding zo specifiek was, zitten we er ook een beetje in vast. Ik zou het fantastisch vinden om me zodanig te ontwikkelen als performer dat ik eender welk concept op een podium zou kunnen brengen.”
Zijn jullie eerder circusmakers of uitvoerders?
Van Maele: “Als circusartiest ben je vaak beide, dat vind ik heel waardevol. Toen ik pas startte had ik vooral interesse voor het doen, maar nu steeds meer voor het maken.”
Steindl: “Als we altijd onder ons vier blijven creëren dan zullen we misschien vervallen in eenzelfde soort werk. Ik wil dus zeker ook werken voor iemand anders. Het geeft een frisse kijk op waar je zelf mee bezig bent.”
Hoe nemen jullie als groep beslissingen tijdens een creatie?
De Broeck: “We hebben geen vaste manier van werken. Het proces ontstaat al doende. We werken veel met improvisatie. Als het aankomt op keuzes maken zijn we erg democratisch. We houden rekening met ieders mening, maar dat leidt niet altijd tot de boeiendste keuzes.”
Van Maele: “We houden ons in.”
Steindl: “We praten te veel.”
Van Maele: “We staan allemaal op gelijke hoogte als makers en daardoor blokkeren we elkaars ideeën soms en komen we uit bij een middenweg. We stoppen een denkproces te vroeg, we zijn nooit radicaal. Het zou wat mij betreft mogelijk moeten zijn om af en toe één van ons de leiding geven, waardoor die echt ver kan gaan zonder te worden afgeremd door de rest.”
Zech: “Het zoeken naar een compromis neemt inderdaad veel tijd in beslag. Ieders mening is even belangrijk en het is erg tijdsintensief om uit te zoeken wat die meningen betekenen als je ze op scène brengt. Maar het heeft ook een waarde dat we over alles moeten discussiëren, dat alles in vraag gesteld wordt.”
Steindl: “Soms vult iemand anders jouw ideeën net aan en kom je samen verder.”
De Broeck: “Een meerwaarde van het creëren in groep is dat er gewoon meer is om mee te werken. Meer ideeën, meer talenten, meer mogelijkheden.”
Vanwaar komt de naam ‘Familiar Faces’?
Zech: “In het derde jaar volgde ik een bijvak rond cultureel ondernemerschap. Als eindwerk moesten we een zakelijk plan uitwerken. De eerste stap was het bedenken van een goeie naam voor ons kwartet. We hadden verschillende werkwijzen voor die zoektocht: samenzitten en diep nadenken, op de grond liggen op feestjes en daar brainstormen, …”
Steindl: “… de mening van anderen vragen, heel dronken worden, een deadline vastleggen en ons er vervolgens niet aan houden… We hadden vooral veel dwaze ideeën en woordgrapjes die voortkwamen uit die dwaze ideeën. Op een gegeven moment hadden we zo dringend een naam nodig dat we er een tijdelijke kozen: Familiar Faces. Daarna zouden we verder zoeken.”
De Broeck: “Toen we afstudeerden, overwogen we nog om de naam te veranderen, maar intussen waren we er al aan gehecht. Mensen kenden ons onder die naam en we hadden niet direct een beter idee.”
Wat zijn jullie plannen voor de nabije toekomst?
Steindl: “Eerst en vooral de creatie van ‘Not sure where this came from’ afronden.”
Van Maele: “Of beslissen dat het nooit helemaal af zal zijn en daar vrede mee nemen.”
Steindl: “Verder zijn er plannen voor een echte creatie. Een groot, goed gepland project met alles erop en eraan.”
Zech: “Wie weet zelfs met een premièredatum.” (lacht)
Steindl: “We hebben ons aangemeld voor CircusNext met dit project, dus hopelijk worden we gekozen. De Nederlandse preselectie haalden we alleszins al (ondertussen weten we dat Familiar Faces ook de tweede horde heeft genomen: ze horen bij de 12 projecten die meedingen voor de 6 definitieve laureaten, red.). Maar ook als we niet geselecteerd worden, denk ik dat we deze voorstelling zullen maken. We hebben ideeën en we willen die ook realiseren.”
Zech: “Enige ondersteuning zou toch nuttig zijn. Ik moet ook huur betalen aan het einde van de maand.”
Jullie wonnen de BNG Bank Circusprijs voor jullie afstudeeract, nu dingen jullie naar een plek bij CircusNext. Wat betekenen die wedstrijden en prijzen voor jullie?
De Broeck: “Het is fijn om geld te krijgen dat je vrij kan besteden, maar er zit ook een raar kantje aan. We gaven ons op voor Cirque de Demain (jaarlijkse mondiale circuswedstrijd in Parijs, red.), hoewel we ons vragen stellen over hoe eerlijk het er daar aan toe gaat. Maar je kan er ook veel uithalen, dus waarom niet.”
Van Maele: “Je mag zeggen dat ik er tegen was.”
De Broeck: “We besloten als groep om ons aan te melden. Maar we werden niet geselecteerd.”
Steindl: “Het is fijn om genomineerd te worden of een prijs te krijgen. Het betekent dat er iemand interesse heeft in je werk, en het zorgt voor zichtbaarheid van het gezelschap. Tegelijk is het vreemd hoe er, bijvoorbeeld bij CircusNext, geselecteerd wordt op basis van een dossier. We zijn getraind om circus te doen, niet om dossiers te schrijven.”
Zech: “Je kan dat ook niet op school leren. We moeten er gewoon nog in groeien. Dat soort werk is onvermijdelijk om te doen wat we doen, dus we moeten het erbij nemen. Hetzelfde geldt voor het promoten van ons werk, het contact met programmatoren, leren onderhandelen over betaling, …”
Van Maele: “In een ideale wereld zou ik gewoon mijn eigen ruimte hebben waar ik alles zou creëren wat ik wil, wanneer ik wil. Als het goed is, wordt het opgepikt. Nog beter zou zijn dat je niet financieel afhankelijk bent van je eigen creaties, maar dat je ergens anders een inkomen verdient, bijvoorbeeld als uitvoerend artiest, en dat je in volledige vrijheid eigen werk kan ontwikkelen.”
De Broeck: “Momenteel is er toch een zekere financiële druk, misschien voor sommigen van ons meer dan voor anderen, maar de druk is er.”
Heb je al toegevingen moeten doen omwille van die druk?
Van Maele: “Met onze huidige voorstelling loert het gevaar om toegevingen te doen. We beseffen dat we moeten spelen en zoeken naar manieren om het meer ‘speelbaar’ te maken. Die motivatie voelt als een compromis.”
Steindl: “Ik zie dat niet zo. We willen het niet speelbaar maken, we willen er zelf meer tevreden mee zijn.”
De Broeck: “Ja, maar meer speelkansen zullen maken dat we meer tevreden zijn, toch?”
Steindl: “Ik denk niet dat dat onze motivatie is.”
Wie of wat inspireert jullie?
De Broeck: “Ik haal inspiratie uit de kleine dingen die ik dagelijks tegenkom. Een constante is mijn liefde voor balanceren: het balanceren van mensen en voorwerpen, maar ook zelf gebalanceerd zijn.”
Steindl: “Er zijn verschillende vormen van kunst die me inspireren: ik lees, luister en kijk en sommige dingen laten een indruk na die later mijn ideeën beïnvloeden. Het klink misschien gek, maar op het festival Smells Like Circus werd ik geïnspireerd door circustechniek. Ik voelde een hernieuwde fascinatie voor wat er allemaal mogelijk is en wat wij – circusmensen – allemaal kunnen.”
Van Maele: “Als groep zijn we sterk beïnvloed door twee mensen: Pia Meuthen, de choreografe van Panama Pictures (Nederlands dansgezelschap, red.) en Sergi Parés, acrobaat bij onder meer Un Loup pour l’homme. Pia liet ons kennismaken met vormen van creatie en improvisatie uit dans, iets wat onze eigen werkwijze enorm heeft verrijkt. Sergi kwam iets later op ons pad. Zijn manier van werken sluit aan bij die van Pia, maar hij is zelf een partneracrobaat dus de focus lag nog dichter bij onze praktijk. Mede door hen ontwikkelden we de creatieve acrobatie die ons werk typeert.”
Zou je wat jullie doen eerder omschrijven als dans of als circus?
Steindl: “We krijgen die vraag regelmatig. Je ziet de interesse voor dans in ons werk maar ik zou nooit zeggen dat we dansers zijn. Wij zijn getraind om virtuositeit te bereiken in partneracrobatie, dansers zijn virtuoos in het uitdrukken van bewegingskwaliteiten met hun lichaam. Wij gebruiken werkwijzen van dans om onze circustechniek minder scherp te maken en om dingen uit te drukken die moeilijker te zeggen zijn met de abstracte vormen van circustrucs.”
De Broeck: “Ik vind hokjesdenken zelden nuttig, die wens om een kunstvorm op een voorstelling te plakken. Maar ik zou wat wij doen absoluut omschrijven als circus, in de hoop dat er steeds meer diversiteit aanvaard zal worden binnen het vakje circus.”
Zech: “We integreren verschillende invloeden uit dans en fysiek theater in onze circuspraktijk met als doel onze toeschouwers te raken, niet dat ze zich afvragen of het dans of circus is.”
Maken jullie kunst?
Steindl: “Ik zou zeggen van niet.”
De Broeck: “Wat is kunst… Daar discussiëren we vaker over.”
Steindl: “Het is gevaarlijk en onnodig om die vraag te beantwoorden. Er worden te gemakkelijk grenzen gesteld waar er geen grenzen zijn, waardoor je de smaak en de mening veroordeelt van mensen die anders denken. Zeggen of het al dan niet kunst is, is voor mij niet van belang voor wat we doen. Oh wacht, ik bedenk zojuist een definitie die zou kunnen werken: alle expressie is kunst.”
De Broeck: “Elke menselijke expressie kan kunst zijn. Daar kan ik me wel in vinden.”
Steindl: “Maar dan zou het uiten van gevoelens ook kunst zijn. Dat klopt niet helemaal.”
De Broeck: “Kunst als een moment dat iets uitdrukt… Kan een zonsopgang ook kunst zijn?”
Steindl: “Nee. Ja. Het is een natuurlijk kunstwerk. Ik denk, als iemand iets wil transformeren van zijn binnenste naar buiten, en dat op een bepaalde manier wil tonen aan anderen, dan zou ik dat misschien kunst noemen. Ik weet wel niet of het een goed idee is om dit letterlijk te noteren, want waarschijnlijk denk ik er morgen al anders over.”
Nemen jullie je visie op de wereld mee in het werk dat jullie maken?
Van Maele: “Te weinig, denk ik. Ik worstel soms met die vraag: waarom doe ik dit? Voor mijzelf? Of moet ik niet op een of andere manier bijdragen tot het grotere geheel? Het is simpel om te zeggen ‘ik leef mijn leven om gelukkig te zijn’, maar een meer verantwoordelijk doel zou niet mijn eigen geluk zijn, wel het geluk van de wereld die mij omringt.”
De Broeck: “Ik denk dat je wereldvisie niet zichtbaar moet zijn in het werk dat je maakt. Maar het mag die visie niet tegenspreken.”
Van Maele: “Zoals toen Petra niet wilde meedoen aan een reclame voor melk. Je moet ergens een lijn trekken waar je persoonlijke overtuiging het wint van wat je wil doen voor een publiek.”
Steindl: “We dragen bij aan de samenleving in de zin dat we iets cultureels aanbieden, wat sommige mensen graag zien en blij maakt. Maar dat is nog iets anders dan met je werk bepaalde problemen aankaarten of standpunten verdedigen. Dat doen we op dit moment niet en circus moet dat ook niet doen, vind ik. Anderzijds, we kunnen er wel voor kiezen, we hebben die macht als artiest voor een publiek.”
Van Maele: “We zijn er volgens mij nog niet klaar voor. Bovendien moet je dan als groep volledig op dezelfde lijn staan over de boodschap. Niet simpel.”
Waar dromen jullie van?
Steindl: “Het Burgtheater in Wenen uitverkopen!”
Zech: “Genoeg verdienen om ooit een eigen huis te kopen met mijn vriendin.”
De Broeck: “Financieel stabiel genoeg zijn zodat ik alles wat ik nog wil ervaren en leren gewoon kan doen.”
Van Maele: “Ik wil mijn hele leven dingen blijven maken. Met circus of met andere disciplines, waar ik me op dat moment goed bij voel. Voor mij is circus meer dan een carrière. Het is niet mijn beroep. Het is een levensstijl. Het is wat ik doe.”
