De voorbije twee zomers maakten Diede Roosens en Carmine De Swerts – samen Het Kabinet – de Vlaamse wegen onveilig met hun retro bakbrommer. Aan 22 km/uur reizen ze van stad naar stad en vertonen hun kleine, bizarre circus van opgezette kanaries en roestige mechaniekjes. Beide dames volgden als tiener trapeze- en koorddansles in Circusplaneet en vervolgden hun weg aan KASK (Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten) in Gent. Twee jaar geleden studeerden ze daar af met een heus vlooiencircus. Zowel zijzelf als hun laatste project, ‘De Kanariteiten’, ademen de fascinatie voor het oude romantische en rondreizende circus uit.

Werkten jullie met circus tijdens jullie opleidingen aan het KASK?
Diede Roosens: “Ik aanvankelijk niet, nee. Ik was het circus een beetje kwijt en legde ook niet echt bewust een verband tussen wat ik deed in de trapezeles en wat ik leerde aan de opleiding Drama.”
Carmine De Swerts: “Ik bouwde circusapparaten tijdens mijn opleiding Multimediale Vormgeving. Mijn allereerste project was een klein, niet-werkend vlooiencircus in een valiesje, met een belletje. Daarna bouwde ik een zelf-spelende accordeon, die ook niet helemaal werkte. Het idee was dat die accordeon kon dienen als muzikant in een circusvoorstelling.”
Roosens: “Je hebt ook eens een heel groot beest gemaakt dat aan een kraan hing en waar jij zelf opzat.”
De Swerts: “Ja, een vuurvlieg. Dat was ook een soort spektakelapparaat. Ik ben altijd gefascineerd geweest door circus en machines. Beide delen het idee dat niets onmogelijk is.”
Het feit dat de dingen niet per se mogelijk zijn, maar dat wel lijken?
De Swerts: “Ja, al het onmogelijke lijkt toch mogelijk in het circus. En wanneer je stuit op iets wat niet kan, dan verzin je het gewoon.”
Is dat zo anders dan in het theater of in de beeldende kunsten dan?
Roosens: “Het verschil is waarschijnlijk dat het voor circusartiesten essentiëler is om iets te doen of te leren wat iemand anders niet kan.”
Is dat idee van het onmogelijke op een bepaalde manier aanwezig in jullie manier van werken?
Roosens: “Misschien zijn wij niet zo hard bezig met wat anderen kunnen of met wat er nog niet te zien is geweest, maar zelf moeten we wel steeds onze grenzen verleggen. Zo hebben we voor ‘De Kanariteiten’ leren lassen en veel over mechaniek en taxidermie geleerd.”
Hoe en waar ontstaan jullie ideeën?
Roosens: “Wij werken vanuit onze gezamenlijke fantasie. We proberen die te verwerkelijken door te tekenen en te knutselen. In een eerste fase bouwen we gewoon allerlei dingen in ons atelier.”
De Swerts: “We zoeken ook oplossingen voor datgene wat wij liever niet willen doen, zoals zelf zichtbaar zijn als performers of spelers.”
Dus wat jullie maken komt voort uit het prutsen met materiaal in jullie atelier?
Roosens: “Inderdaad. Pas in een tweede fase zijn we voor ‘De Kanariteiten’ beginnen denken aan een ‘spektakel’. Ik zou waarschijnlijk zelf veel bedenkingen hebben bij een manier van werken waarin je eerst je ‘truuk’ oefent en nadien pas nadenkt over wat je daarmee wil doen. Maar wij doen dat eigenlijk zelf: wij vertrekken vanuit onze techniek. Zo loopt dat in ons hoofd. Anderzijds denken we wel van in het begin aan een dramaturgie en sfeer die moeten kloppen, aan iets wat alle deeltjes bij elkaar kan houden. We stelden ons bijvoorbeeld wel de vraag waarom we met kanaries werkten en niet met varkens. Maar we vergeten weleens om onszelf daarin te plaatsen.”
En waarom werken jullie met kanaries en niet met varkens?
Roosens: “Omdat wij veel van geel houden. (lacht) En omdat kanaries uit zichzelf heel veel dingen doen die je ‘circus’ zou kunnen noemen.”
De Swerts: “Ze schommelen, zoals op een trapeze. Ze vliegen. Ze zingen. Ze hupsen.”
Waarom werken jullie met opgezette en niet met levende dieren? Is het werken met dode dieren dan een kritiek op het idee van dressuur?
De Swerts: “Wij zijn knutselaars, geen dompteurs.”
Roosens: “Ik ben niet tegen circus met dieren. Het is eerder zo dat wij het gevoel hebben 150 jaar te laat geboren te zijn. We kunnen echt hartenpijn hebben van het feit dat we niet geboren zijn in een circusfamilie die reeds vijf generaties teruggaat. En dus dachten we: we verzinnen dat gewoon. Wij zijn een reizend circus dat al vijf generaties lang met kanaries rondrijdt. Zij zijn niet het eeuwige leven beschoren, dus moeten ze wel opgezet zijn. Anders is er geen show.”
Is ‘De Kanariteiten’ een circusvoorstelling?
Roosens: “Ja, zeker op dramaturgisch vlak: het is een aaneenschakeling van acts. Met onze bakbrommer reizen we het land door, houden halt, bouwen op en breken terug af. Wat er gebeurt in de voorstelling verwijst ook vaak naar typische circuselementen, zoals het trapezenummer of de messenwerpact bijvoorbeeld.”
De Swerts: “We zijn wel heel erg bezig geweest met de vraag of je van circus kunt spreken wanneer je zelf geen metier uitoefent. We willen dat de toeschouwers komen kijken naar het kunnen van de kanaries, niet naar dat van ons. Dat was ook een van de redenen waarom we onszelf wilden verstoppen.”
Roosens: “Maar toch hebben wij ook een bepaalde behendigheid moeten ontwikkelen om alles met stokken te besturen van achter de klep van de brommer, werkend met spiegels. Zo flirten we wel met een bepaald metier, en ook met magie. Het gaat dus ook over de presentatie van onze capaciteiten, maar wel in functie van wat de kanaries doen.”
Jullie werken samen met Iris Carta van Cie Circ’ombelico. Hoe zien jullie haar rol?
De Swerts: “Met Iris werken we op hoe wij zelf aanwezig zijn in de voorstelling. Ze vroeg ons wie wij zijn, waarom we dit willen maken en hoe we dat zichtbaar kunnen maken. Hoe zorgen we ervoor dat het niet louter een rare tentoonstelling is van vreemde kanaries, maar wel een voorstelling waarvan men kan begrijpen wat we ermee willen zeggen en waarom we dit doen.”
Roosens: “Omdat er tijdens de voorstelling technisch van alles mis kan gaan, kom je al snel uit bij een aanwezigheid die neigt naar slapstick of clownerie. Maar onder andere doorheen het werk met Iris beseften we dat we eigenlijk zo gewoon mogelijk moeten doen. Onszelf moeten spelen, eigenlijk, met dezelfde rust waarmee we de installatie gebouwd hebben.”
Vanuit het idee dat een circusvoorstelling niet zozeer de verbeelding is van iets, maar wel een bepaalde praktijk die je framet?
Roosens: “Ja, daarin zitten reeds een heleboel betekenissen vervat. Het tonen van onze praktijk en het tentoonstellen van de apparaten die we gebouwd hebben – wat in feite eerder aanleunt bij de beeldende kunst of de installatiekunst – is voor ons belangrijker dan zelf een nummer brengen met de kanaries als attribuut.”
De Swerts: “Inderdaad, daar is niet per se een verhaal bij nodig.”
Alle materiaal waar jullie mee werken is gerecycleerd?
De Swerts: “Ja, zoveel mogelijk. Je kunt natuurlijk geen twee keer rivetten schieten. En soms kopen we wel eens nieuw schuurpapier, maar we werken meestal met gevonden en verzamelde spullen.”
Roosens: “Automatisch kiezen wij voor oudere dingen, we vinden die gewoon mooi.”
Een pleidooi voor continuïteit en historisch besef?
Roosens: “Nee, letterlijk: recycleren. Noem het conservatief, maar waarom zou je iets weggooien als het eigenlijk niet aan vervanging toe is? Conservatisme heeft een negatieve bijklank, terwijl er ook schoonheid in schuilt. Het feit dat de Nederlandse taal nog bestaat is ook het gevolg van het feit dat een heleboel ‘conservatieve’ mensen die taal willen bewaren en haar in woordenboeken opschrijven.”
Ook in de kunst? Waarom zou je terug willen keren naar vroeger als kunstenaar vandaag?
Roosens: “Ik denk dat ik dat graag wil doen omdat het oude, of datgene waarvan iedereen denkt dat het voorbij is, ook een reflectie is op hoe we nu zijn en leven. Door in de actuele wereld iets te plaatsen uit een andere, vroegere tijd, gebeurt er iets in je hoofd. Je kunt dat nostalgie noemen. Maar op een bepaalde manier is alle kunst een verstoring van de ‘normale’ orde. Iets wat zich in een verkeerde tijd afspeelt, werkt net zo: het haalt je heel even uit de normale gang van zaken en doet je misschien dromen.”
