De laatste noot van muziektovenaar Samuel ‘LoopTok’ Andersson lost op in het oorverdovende applaus. In de piste staan zeventien vers afgestudeerden van de Dans och Cirkushögskolan (DOCH) in Stockholm, Zweden. Het magische ‘alles is mogelijk’-poeder kleeft in hun bezwete haren, fonkelt in hun ogen en klatert in hun lach. “Het zijn makers die buiten de lijntjes durven kleuren. Onze opleiding wil hen het zelfvertrouwen geven om zichzelf steeds opnieuw uit te vinden,” zegt directeur Walter Ferrero.
De allerlaatste eindejaarsvoorstelling zit erop. ‘De klas van 2010’ is druk in de weer met de afbouw of de voorbereiding van het spaghettifeest dat later die avond losbarst in de coulissen. Tussen het gewemel vind ik Walter Ferrero. Zijn baseballpet, hemd met vlammen, korte broek en sandalen schreeuwen ‘artiest’, zijn uitstraling en woorden zeggen ‘Directeur, aangenaam, zeg het maar.’ Diezelfde openheid vind ik terug in de artistieke visie en de structuur van de school, die onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn. “Doordat we deel uitmaken van de Universiteit van Dans en Circus, hebben we een unieke link met dans. We zitten onder hetzelfde dak met dansspecialisten, in de brede zin van het woord. De mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos. Natuurlijk hebben we ook aandacht voor bijvoorbeeld de invloed van theater en beeldende kunst. Maar in de eerste plaats is de ontwikkeling van bewegingstaal belangrijk voor ons. Niet onlogisch trouwens, gezien circus vooral beweging is.”
Ferrero doorzwom heel wat kunstwateren, vooraleer hij het circusleven indook. “Ik heb van vele kunsten geproefd, maar vooral circus voelde echt goed. Ik begon individuele artiesten te coachen in hun creatief proces. Zo rolde ik in de job als hoofd van het voorbereidende circusprogramma hier in Zweden. Het is een middelbare school waar leerlingen tussen 16 en 19 jaar naast hun ‘gewone’ opleiding ook tien uur circusles per week krijgen. Van daaruit hebben ze me gevraagd om het circusprogramma aan de Universiteit uit te werken en ben ik uiteindelijke hoofd van het circusdepartement aan de DOCH geworden.”
‘Nieuw’ circus
Circus is niet alleen vooral beweging, maar is volgens Ferrero ook steeds in beweging, in evolutie. “Circus is altijd al een kunstvorm geweest die zichzelf heruitvindt. Ook al kwamen we twintig jaar geleden aandraven met de term ‘nieuw’ of ‘hedendaags’ circus, als je kijkt naar de geschiedenis zie je dat circusartiesten altijd, generatie na generatie, circus vernieuwd hebben. Ik hoop dat onze studenten op hun beurt, met hun zoektocht, circus zullen herdefiniëren en bijdragen aan die evolutie. Circus zal ook blijven openstaan voor andere kunstvormen. Ik ben uiterst nieuwsgierig wie met wat voor nieuws zal opdagen. Circus zal altijd verder evolueren. Dat zal volgens mij niet stoppen. Juist daarom heb ik circus zo lief als kunstvorm.”
